The third installment in Adam Mansbach’s international best-selling Go the Fuck to Sleep series addresses, with radical honesty, the family implosion that occurs when a second child arrives.
Adam Mansbach famously gave voice to two of parenting’s primal struggles in Go the Fuck to Sleep and You Have to Fucking Eat—the often-imitated, never-duplicated pair of New York Times best sellers that ushered in a new era of radical honesty in humor books for parents. But what could possibly be left?
Parents—new, old, expectant, and grand—of multiple children already knew the answer. Adam discovered it for himself by having two more kids, less than two years apart.
Fuck, Now There Are Two of You is a loving monologue about the new addition to the family, addressed to a big sibling and shot through with Adam’s trademark profane truth-telling. Gorgeously illustrated and chock-full of unspoken sentiments channeled directly from the brains of parents worldwide, Fuck, Now There Are Two of You articulates all the fears and frustrations attendant to the simple, math-defying fact that two is a million more kids than one.
As you probably know by now, you shouldn’t read it to a child.
Adam Mansbach is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Go the Fuck to Sleep, as well as the novels Rage is Back, The End of the Jews (winner of the California Book Award), and Angry Black White Boy, and the memoir-in-verse I Had a Brother Once. With Dave Barry and Alan Zweibel, he co-authored For This We Left Egypt, a finalist for the Thurber Award for American Humor, and the bestselling A Field Guide to the Jewish People. Mansbach's debut screenplay, for the Netflix Original BARRY, was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and an NAACP Image Award, and he is a two-time recipient of the Reed Award and the American Association of Political Consultants' Gold Pollie Award, for his 2012 Obama/Biden campaign video "Wake The Fuck Up" and his 2020 Biden/Harris campaign ad "Same Old," both starring Samuel L. Jackson. Mansbach's work has appeared in The New Yorker, New York Times Book Review, Esquire, The Believer, The Guardian, and on National Public Radio's All Things Considered, The Moth Storytelling Hour, and This American Life. His next novel, The Golem of Brooklyn, will be published by One World in September.
This one was fine. The other two had neat rhymes that worked and this one has... less of that so it felt less wholesome? I liked the illustrations nonetheless, but the writing wasn't on par with the first two.
F**k, Now There Are Two Of You is the third book in the Go The F**k To Sleep series by American author and parent, Adam Mansbach. This book is again set out in the style of a children’s picture book, with marvellous illustrations by Owen Brozman.
So, the parents of the new baby think they're finally handling it OK. They get a bit too cocky, or maybe just oops, and there's another baby on the way. How hard can it be? Harder than they ever dreamed, that's what. Adam Mansbach demonstrates just a few of the ways that #2 will impact the lives of parents (and that’s before they even think about college for two dependants). Parents will nod and groan at the thought of the inconvenience of the extra baby paraphernalia, the lost sleep, the loss of down-time and zero leisure, the challenge of the smallest excursion, the jealous sibling behaviour and the added cost.
Mansbach does it all, once again, with a generous helping of expletives, the ones parents try NOT to use around kids. The rhyming is slightly awkward, but the sentiments will surely resonate with parents of one plus..... Definitely a book for adults: keep out of reach of children.
For those of you that are thinking about having a second child or have just had one this book is for you. It would also make a unique present if you know someone who has had their second child. It is laugh-out-loud funny and contains copious amounts of swearing.
I remember when I was pregnant with my second child another mum saying to me, having a second one is hard, but anymore after that is easy. I thought she was joking but she wasn’t. Going from one child to two feels strange, and I feel this book perfectly sums it up.
The illustrations by Owen Brozman are perfect and full-page. My favourite image is of their eldest child wanting to be like a baby again, stood in the new baby’s cot with a dummy in his mouth, it certainly brought back memories.
I can see parents nodding in agreement at the lack of sleep or items everywhere or even the behaviour of their older child who goes from wanting to help and be loving to wanting to be the little one again.
This is not a book for children, this is a picture book for adults. Just like the original book by Adam Mansbach, ‘Go the F*ck to Sleep’, this book makes light of what being a parent is really like.
Every parent has surely wondered about expanding their family after a first child. The curiosity of seeking to add another slobbering mouth to feed and body to sleep is real. Adam Mansbach tackles this topic in a children’s book format. Through rhyming prose, Mansbach looks at the various dramatic events that occur when one child becomes two and the horrors that could ensue. As the narrator tells the elder child how their life will change with the addition of a second, the pain is real. A sort of self-reflection on the truths of a new baby, Mansbach spells it out with great detail, peppering in some profanities to bring the point home. Highly entertaining and realistic at the same time, Mansbach adds humour to keep the adult reader laughing.
While the story is compact, the impact is still felt. Mansbach uses rhyme to show how a second child can go from a nice idea to a panic-driven reality. Disaster and worry envelop the parents as the elder child must be told that things will forever change. Mansbach keeps the reader laughing until the very end, with a reflective zinger many parents have wondered themselves.
Kudos, Mr. Mansbach, finding the funny in panic and horror that follows the news of a new baby.
I didn’t think this book was as good as the first book. I really struggled with the rhyming aspect in this book as I had to really slow down and say each word before I was able to get the rhyming to work for me. What I did like in this book was the illustrations and the message that the text was getting across (aside from the curse words).
Just when you thought you had things under control and you could go out in public w/o taking half your house with you or knowing that you could actually go eat at restaurant for about an hour, w/ an individual who brings you food, you decide that your life is too quiet and you have another baby. I’m sure that was your first thought, right? You think about the individuals who have their children close together and wonder, how can they handle all those kids in diapers and then you, wait until things have calmed down at home and the add another baby to your house and now, things are crazy again and calm is a word in the dictionary.
In this book, the parents have just found out that they’re pregnant again. Their son will not be getting all their attention anymore and they knew there might be some behavior issues yet as you read, their son becomes quite a handful. The whole family must now make adjustments for the baby as he arrives and makes his presence known. Meanwhile, their son is also making his presence known. There are some sweet moments and the parents love their children but with two children on two different schedules, the parents are running out of energy.
The illustrations show the love and chaos that families face. Many of the illustrations made me laugh as I remember trying to juggle my own kids. I think the text and illustrations worked for me and if I didn’t try to rhythm, I liked the book.
The book brought back a lot of memories. Trying to juggle my own kids and not lose it. I think it helped when I tried to walk in my kid’s shoes. So, would it be okay to play in the mud? Be messy with my food? Draw on the walls? How about give them a place where they can draw (a big section of space)? Sometimes, there is a time and a place for these activities (boundaries).
FUCK, NOW THERE ARE TWO OF YOU by Adam Mansbach and illustrated by Owen Brozman. I received this ARC (Advance Reading Copy) from Akashic Books. Thank you. It really made my day! I don’t know what to say that hasn’t been said before about this book and Mr. Mansbach’s two previous titles, GO TO FUCK TO SLEEP and YOU HAVE TO FUCKING EAT. As a librarian (by trade) and voracious reader (by habit), I have been introduced to a new genre - adult picture books. I quite enjoy them. These particular books are laugh-aloud hilarious and seem to release some sort of primeval feelings that desperately need an outlet. The Press Kit that came with FUCK, NOW THERE ARE TWO OF YOU included a very funny author’s statement from the author, Adam Mansbach, and very funny, excellent reviews. I especially liked the review from Kirkus Reviews - “If you’re a fan of both Larry David and profane children’s book parodies, don’t even try to curb your fucking enthusiasm.” And CBS News, “Larry David will narrate the audiobook version of a popular children’s tale, in what may be the most sarcastic, dark-humored bedtime story known to man.”
My only advice to parents and would-be parents would be to read Mr. Mansbach’s books; chuckle and laugh out loud; push the toys off the couch and open up that cheap bottle of wine you’ve kept hidden in the cupboard. That is, if you can open the child-locked doors.
I received a free finished copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affects my opinions.
After reading this hilarious book, I'm definitely of the opinion that we need more adult picture books in the world!
F*ck, Now There are Two of You is the third book in series started by Go the F*ck to Sleep. If you can't guess from the title, it's a book of hard truths and humor about having a second child.
My boyfriend and I both laughed from the first page to the last. This book would make a perfect gift for any of your friends who are about to have their second baby.
Advanced copy from Library Thing and Akashic Books
Loved it! But then again I live for irreverence. Short and sweet and gets the point across. Thinking I should buy copies for all my friends even remotely thinking of another child.
I got an ARC of this and COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE EXCITED!! I absolutely loved the first two, and this did NOT disappoint. Being a mother of two - let me tell you, this shit HITS HOME. awesome girl for someone having their second child!!
Hilarious addition to the F**k series. The audiobook even has a lovely lullaby score playing in the background. I look forward to checking out the physical book at some point. Fantastic!
Thanks to libro.fm for a free Advanced Listening Copy in return for an honest review.
My cousin got this for Christmas from her husband and let me read it! She is a mother of two and is exhausted by it so these books definitely help her cope with the crazies. Now as funny as Go the F*ck to Sleep but still hilarious even for me who is not a mother
Seriously so good. All parents with two kids or expecting another child needs this book! The audiobook version is even better. Larry David brings this book to life!
This is the latest contribution to Mansbach's parody picture book series, and it harkens back to the original's glory. Illustrations feature diverse representation and family units. Readers will enjoy variety of situations that this book covers, from the pregnancy to thinking about sending the children to college. Some readers may not appreciate the language in the book, and readers should be aware that this book is targeted for adults and not children.
For: parents, caregivers, and those who have children in their lives; readers looking for a humorous parody book.
When I saw this come I snagged that shit out of the mail because IT WAS MINE!!!!! This was **** good as the first one!! I couldn't put it down and read it of course in one sitting. I laughed thought the entire story but you also find yourself wanting to cry because you know that its the honest truth of how your life changes once an extra child pops into your life. If you want a good laugh/cry as a parent this is a must read for you!!
This being the first book I have read by Adam Mansbach, I found that this book provides a humorous yet honest presentation of the addition of a second child in a children's book format. Beautiful illustrations along with funny poetry make it a worthwhile book. My only critique is the poetry of the text has loose rhyming patterns that sometimes do not flow that well.
According to my friends who have children, this book is an entirely accurate representation of life with kids and the joys and frustrations of parenthood. The rhymes are remarkable, and the art style is charming. I highly recommend this for a quick read. Once you finish it, you'll want to share it with all the parents in your life. Flipping through this delightful picture book is a balm to the soul and a guaranteed giggle.
I received the first book, "Go the f**k to sleep," when I was pregnant with my oldest daughter. Eight years later I now have two babies and this book sums up the earlier years so perfectly! I could not help but laugh on every page because I felt like the book had been written for me. For every parent that has two, this is a fun little break from the day-to-day that will remind you to laugh when you need it the most.
Realistic feelings about the second child in the "Go the F* to Sleep" series. However, even though this is funny, the author and illustrator might have gone to the well too many times. There is something "missing" or at least, the "punch" of the first is lost. Mostly since F* has been used so many different times of late, it has lost its shock value.
Thanks to Libro.fm for the audio copy! I love their program for librarians and educators. Larry David narrates the latest installment of Adam Mansbach's cheeky series. It had me giggling....now I just need to find someone about to have a second child.
I thought his 1st book was hilarious! I bought this book for a friend who is having a second child because I thought it would be funny but this one doesn't feel funny enough to not be offensive. Just a bit harsh and real
