it genuinely hurts my heart to rate this book so low because i love bakarina so much but i just have a whole lot of problems with it
-the author says "i never expected to publish a fourth volume" and i'm like yeah i can tell
-another kidnapping plot. this is the third one in a row
-but like... the plot was fine! it had interesting moments, the series' signature humor, etc. like it was pretty okay.
-my problem lies with katarina herself. we're well past the point where we, as the reader, can rightfully expect katarina to get it through her head that her plot as a villainess is over, she doesn't have to worry about death flags anymore, and she can focus on her interpersonal relationships. we can expect that she has grown and changed from her experiences through the first two volumes, just as she changed the friends she made into better, happier people!
but that payoff never comes!!!!
katarina is still the exact same person she was at eight years old. her experiences and her friends give her exactly 0 character development (and tbh, beyond the ways they change in the very beginning of the series, none of the other characters develop either) and the author can try to wave that away with "oh i'm just a childish 15/16/17 year old" but that doesn't make it believable or good. the last volume, at least, introduced another love interest as well as another important character to keep things interesting, but this volume doesn't even have that saving grace. i can see that they're trying to set up some overarching plot about dark magic users, but it's seriously falling flat.
and like. this hurts because i love bakarina to literal pieces. her obliviousness was, in part, what drew me to the series in the first place, but now we're at the point where it's more annoying than endearing. i'll still read the next volume, since, it's a short story collection that i'm actually interested in, but who knows if i'll continue after that.
in short: give bakarina some character development !!! ლ(ಠ益ಠლ) (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

This series was definitely not meant to last this long and vol 4 really is showing how it's bursting at its seams.
Yet again, a kidnapping is the focal event of the story in this book, which is actually rather sad given that the past 2 volumes has ALSO revolved around kidnapping. This time however, the twist is that Keith, her adopted brother, is the one getting kidnapped and involved in a nefarious plot with his birth family.
This being Villainess, the main conflict is basically resolved by Bakarina's plot armor as usual, so the main gist of the book really is about the continuing romantic pursuits from her suitors, which are unfortunately expertly parried by her sheer denseness.
While this quality made the original story a super-hillarious take on the "otome games" genre, it also makes Bakarina's character remain at a standstill, with the author choosing to conveniently (ab)use her denseness for comedic relief. It also makes it feel the author really never prepared to have this work extended past the initial main setup.
That said, there are some work being done to introduce a longer, overarching story and conflict to the series, with random infodumps and newly introduced characters. While this volume and the previous one didn't really impress me at all, there's hints of more interesting happenings to come in the next, which suffices to keep me reading for now.

Woke up in the middle of the night, couldn’t fall asleep, read this in one go. I LOVE THIS SERIES SO MUCH!!! Glad Katarina wasn’t the damsel in distress this time around. And TWO declarations?!? Well, two OBVIOUS ones. Nicole and Sora, (fans self) did somewhat declare themselves, but not in a way she understood. Poor fiancée has an uphill battle! Completely in love and on to the next!

Probably the weakest book in the series thus far.
Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of a side story delving into Keith and Katarina's relationship, but I think this one falls short because of its heavy focus on plot. This series' strong point is its characters, romance and comedy— imo any plot is best kept simple so we don't have enough time to analyze it and see how contrived it actually is (again, there really isn't anything wrong with this kind of plot if it serves its purpose). This feels like an expository book setting up future arcs rather than a contained story on its own, and you can tell the author was struggling to write the characters separated from each other. The main cast is relegated to the background, sulking because of Katarina's absence and this leads to a lot of rehashing points we're already very familiar with.
As far as story progression, we're now at two suitors who have made their feelings clear, though Katarina does her best to pretend this isn't the case. Side note: It seems like she's not opposed to being romanced as long as it starts slow, which I think makes sense as she doesn't have any real experience over two lifetimes.

It was fun enough, but damn this one is so short I hesitate to even call it a light novel. With this we also wrap up stuff that's been covered by the manga to date. We got a little bit extra story in the novel this time at least. Not much, but at least enough to add some depth to the brief events that occur. Gonna take a break from this series now for at least a short moment.

Although it was amusing for the first couple of volumes, Katarina Is not evolving as a character. She hasn’t matured at all, despite the fact that technically she’s in her mid-30s experience wise. And she is painfully stupid. It’s hard to read when you dislike the main character so much. It’s also tedious how we get to read the same part over and over from a different point of view as each character ruminates on how they’re feeling.
First she is so focused on Keith that she forgot about Jeord’s confession. Then she is derailed from the search for Keith by snacks and shopping. Basically she has the attention span of a goldfish. It is absolutely unbelievable that all of these remarkable people are in love with her. She spent half her trip in a bizarre competition with a stuffed bear., and nearly ending up seduced by Maria. The absurdity is really out of hand.
The writing was never good, so I can’t tell if it actually got worse or if my patience has run out. So many rare Dark Magic users have appeared now, and Katarina has a dark magic familiar 🙄 like that wasn’t a convenient plot device. But don’t worry, the scary girl will probably fall in love with Katarina also, not get punished and work for the ministry like every other bad guy so far.

i'm still fond of katarina and co. but i feel like the story premise is wearing a little thin here -- if yamaguchi really wants to try out katarina/jeord i feel like it'd be better to do it the way they've done katarina/maria where like her thoughts are blatantly romantic but she doesn't acknowledge it rather then her finally picking up what jeord is putting down and then conveniently forgetting for the sake of going back to the oblivious harem master status quo
also...katarina/jeord aint that interesting lol, i'm sorry but it's true! the most entertaining parts of his pov are him facing off against mary, let her make some progress instead

Well this certainly was a short one. Barely 200 pages. Anyway, this light novel essentially only contains one story. Keith gets kidnapped by his bitter brother and Katarina, Maria, Jeord, Larna (another prince's fiance) and Sora (bad guy from previous book with new name) go off to find him.
This one has a lot of Jeord in it since he's traveling with Katarina, and i have to say....of all the love interests i like him the least, so seeing him constantly flirt with her was really not my cup of tea. They pick up what appears to be two cute new characters in this one, a magical teddy bear and a dark magic puppy. interesting choice to have mascot characters show up at this point. not sure if they're going to overstay their welcome or not, but we'll see.
As it is, in the previous volumes, Katarina's doofiness basically resulted in her solving all the issues peacefully, like with Rafael and Sora. This one however...without spoiling too much..just kind of is fixed by the end. Like, very anticlimactically and it left me with a very...meh. feeling.
She's still incredibly doofy but we know by the end of this novel at least 2 of the love interests have confessed to her, so there's that at least. Slowly but surely her harem is confessing so she won't have the "oh i had no idea" excuse anymore.
I do have to say though, normally in a harem anime, you can point a million miles away, like from episode or chapter one who she's going to end up with. But this is the first time in a LONG TIME i honestly couldn't tell you who Katarina is going to end up with. Like, i mean She IS engaged to Jeord, but that means nothing in the context of this story as she's been engaged to him since they were like 8 years old and it was an engagement of convenience.
I know light novels can't really be considered filler....but of the four volumes, this one is definitely the most...fillery feeling. Like in volume 3, Katarina got kidnapped, so in volume 4, her brother gets kidnapped? seems a little rinsey-repeat to me. Not only that, but not even all the main cast gets to go on the trip. Of the original main cast of season one, only Jeord and Maria get to go while the other two are relatively new.
The only thing i can say positive about this book is i AM glad it focused on Keith since I do enjoy Keith as a character. Here's hoping volume five will be better. Because four was.....fine? I suppose? nothing to write home about like volumes 1 and 2.

Not another kidnapping plot, is all of the harem going to get kidnapped at some point?
Also if all it took to get katerina's attention was to kiss her I wish other members of the harem could jump on that train already because Jeord making strides is super boring, he's easily the least interesting contender....

Okay I know I said the last volume was my favorite by far but I change my mind.
THIS volume is my favorite by far.
A 5 out of 5 from me! If I were being suuuuper picky then maybe 4.8 but I'm in a happy mood so I give this a perfect score.
I'm gonna start off with what I felt was the biggest improvement: the different POV scenes!
In previous novels, most of the time it felt like the author copy pasted the same scene that recently occured and added a few extra lines in between.
But here??? Almost none of the dialogue was copy pasted! The events were retold in everyone's own specific way! It was so much better reading things like this!
If I were being a little picky, I would prefer it if some of the details were constantly repeated. For example, in all the different POVs, we'd always see a line that was some variation of "Katarina Claes, the daughter of Duke Claes and fiancée of Jeord Stuart, the third crown prince of the kingdom." Bringing it up once or twice is fine, but mentioning it so often felt unneccessary.
Anywho, back to more good stuff! After the events of the previous book, it seems that Katarina has realized another one of the LI's feelings!
Not gonna lie, after the LI's confession, my faith in the first LI who confessed wavered. Now I'm mot sure who to root for!
Oh wait, I do. As a Nicol Ascart fan, it is my obligation to review the Nicol content in this book. After reading his POV, I switched gears and now I'm rooting for Nicol and Katarina to end up together!
From this novel, we learn of Nicol's efforts in dealing with his feelings (and how unsuccessful his efforts have been) and I just-
I want him to be happy and it seems like he'll achieve true happiness with Katarina!
But I also feel the same way about the two LIs who confessed to her already so-
Bottomline: AAAAHHHH this novel was not good for my heart. It had swoonworthy moments, it had adventure and surprises. It also had moments that made me laugh! Truly a masterpiece from the author.

Despite this being the third volume in a row with the same plot, this might be the best volume in the series so far! Unlike the previous volume, the kidnapping actually felt like it had stakes. It was violent, though not detailed, and dangerous and this definitely upheld the intrigue. It was also fast-paced yet stays true to the fluffy and relaxed tone of the series.
As it has been a year since I read volume 3 (I was a little unmotivated to continue after the previous volume) I'd forgotten about my main issue with the series: the repetitiveness. The first two volumes really suffered from repeating whole scenes from a different perspective without the new imput to make it worth it. By this volume, it's mostly a non-issue. Although there are a few scenes where the author doesn't trust the reader to remember or understand details. Especially in the final two chapters. Larna explaining everything to Jeffrey could have been heavily condensed as it re-covered a lot of the information that the reader's already aware of. I did enjoy Larna's theories that were mentioned in this section but it was a slog to get through that recap.
The last chapter was a cute idea but takes us back to that repeating issue with the letters. It was a lot less bothersome though. Looking forward to volume 5!

Another kidnapping? Seriously? Please come up with an actual direction for this series soon. This feels like more of the same and not really in a good way. I do love this series but this is a bit much.

Keith has gone missing, and Katarina is convinced it's all her fault. Rallying together a small team to go in search of him, she, Maria, Sora (Rufus), Jeord, and Larna set off to pursue him. To those who know the truth, this is more serious---Keith has been kidnapped, and with no demand for a ransom, it doesn't look like his captors mean to return him . . .
This book is significantly darker than any of the previous. Although I feel compelled to point out this is the third book in a row that uses kidnapping as a major plot point (please do something different next time), it also differs in that the kidnappers this time are determined to hurt him significantly. So the stakes are higher.
Moments of comedy do surface fairly regularly, though, as Katarina is still prone to doing whatever catches her fancy. I also appreciated Raphael's distressed office work segments (and how he makes a certain someone take responsibility for his actions).
Once again, Katarina's potential love interests spend most of their time trying to sabotage each other. I'm warming up to Jeord more, as he feels less about cutting everyone else down and more about pursuing Katarina on his own and trying to win her heart (unlike some of the others who form alliances to spy on him to intercept him). He's still not my favorite suitor but I respect the way he does things a lot more than many of the others.
This volume sets up what looks like a new arc, with a villain who is much more evil than anyone we've seen so far. I'm looking forward to more stupid shenanigans from Katarina, but maybe there's also a better plot about to surface. I rate this book Recommended.

I love Katarina and this series to death, but at this point these novels are just SO repetitive that it’s becoming a chore to get through them. How many times will the characters be shocked and alarmed to discover a rare dark magic user up to no good? This is the 3rd time in...4 books. And every time the plot has centered around a kidnapping.
“Dense” light novel protagonists are nothing new or usually something that bothers me, but this series takes it to a whole new level. At least come up with some reason (even if it’s contrived) to keep from moving things forward with Jeord’s confession - the author just straight-up said “this development doesn’t move forward in this novel because she just inexplicably forgets it happens for a while.” Can we at least get an amnesia spell or some forced nonsense to make it at least a little less annoying?
Despite all that, however, I can’t bring myself to give this under 3 stars because at the end of the day I adore these characters and I’m still invested, even if the series tries my patience. Charm alone is what keeps this series readable.

Keith really went and did it. I'm glad we're seeing Sora again in this one. He's so honest and real. It'd take a miracle for me to root for Jeord. Of course, everybody wants her and it's frustrating to see these characters suffer when she's thick headed and oblivious to their motives, words, and actions. Overall, don't overthink adoptive sibling love, or maybe do, I guess.

My favorite volumen. It's so beautiful and I cried at the end, because you can see how much they are growing up and the feelings they all share for Catarina and their strong bond, I jus love everything about this.
This was as hilarious as sad, my poor baby Keith ;-; 💜

The writing was not great and it was very repetitive. I feel as if Katerina is getting dumber and denser in each book and it is kinda getting annoying. For this being such a short book I had a hard time finishing it.

I really wanted to give this a higher rating but I mostly got bored of this volume. Don’t get me wrong I love the characters but something was missing. I will still carry on reading this series but hopefully the next volume has more of an improvement.

Awww yeah, this volume focuses on Keith! We get more detail into his experience, and a weird kidnapping plot that I'm sure has absolutely nothing to do with larger goings on at all. The POV and then same scene from different POV trick is getting a bit old, but I can deal with it.

I'd been worried when volume 2 of the light novel series finished up the primary conflict (the protagonist's need to avoid the Catastrophic Bad Ends of the otome game character into whom she's been reborn), because all too often series that are continued beyond that point jump the shark soon after. And the conflict of this volume -- Katarina's brother Keith disappears and she gets blamed for it -- looked like it had a lot of shark-jump potential to it. But I was happily surprised that it turns out that the wicked Dark Magic family from volume 2 was bigger and nastier than they thought -- and there are more ways things can go now.

Not really as funny anymore now that I am comfortable with the characters. Besides, these later books are focussing more on the "rom" part of the romcom which is not as enjoyable. Still, it's a good read otherwise.
2nd reading: It now seems that Katerina is going out of her way to be dense which makes her seem like a spoiled noble lady and that is not a nice character to read about. However, like she always says, she is a villainess.
