Ugh, I really don't know what to think of this series at this point. The climactic event it seemed to be building up towards for the finale actually happened off-page midway through this volume, after which there was a 14-year time jump and all the momentum's gone just like that. None of the main characters are around after that and we follow a set of new ones, albeit ones who are tangentially connected to the main guys from the first two volumes. Then, the book splits into three different stori ...more

Well, that was an unexpected shift. I did not see another huge time jump coming, but Urasawa absolutely keeps you on the edge of your seat, as the events of the past come to light. This is an amazing work, with characters instantly full of life an likability, even as we are introduced to an entirely new cast. The genre shuffles around as we explore the universe from all sorts of perspectives, and good golly is Kana just an amazing character. I need the next volume immediately please.

I need the fourth just like right now!!! It gets even more interesting after each book!

Ugh, UGH, Urasawa is just too good. His pacing and storytelling style are like nothing I've ever read. I'm so amazed he's able to jump around from era to era and it's never confusing and always suspenseful. I may really have to buy these books, haha.

Fantástico! No decae.

Readers of Manga rejoice! There is absolutely a go to manga book that isn't trenched in science fiction or heroes, which you can give your friends/family/colleagues who "don't get manga." 20th Century Boys is truly a perfect story being told through one of the longest, but well deserved, slow burns.

Urasawa, a master story teller in 20th Century Boys, compliments his craft is incredible art, showing incredible detail in each panel . . . a true artist of not only the word, but the visual as well.

This volume may not quite be what readers are expecting after the exciting climax of the second. While the story had previous flipped between the events of the 1960s and late 1990s, this one adds a third timeline to the mix - 2015. The story does not really reveal what happened to Kenji and his allies on what is now known as "Bloody New Years Eve", but it is implied that it went badly. Japan is now a dystopian society ruled by Friend, and Kenji's team are scattered and (largely) unaccounted for. ...more

This one kind of threw me for a loop. It rushes past the big event past volumes have been building up to, then does another time jump and introduces us to a (mostly) all new cast of characters. Can't help but feel like a bit of a story reset, or like Urasawa is jumping straight into a sequel without giving us a true finale to the "original" story he was telling, and as such it's something of a letdown. But -- it must be said the borderline totalitarian world he creates here is compelling, and ma ...more

I don’t even know what to say about 20th Century Boys anymore. This is one of my favorite stories of all time in any medium and I barely read any manga. It’s so intricate and well told and you feel like you live in the world with all the characters and could guess the name of their toothbrush’s color you know them so well. It looks beautiful too, but the story, through 3 of the Perfect Editions, is flawless. I’m in awe and can’t wait to re-read this before the next volume comes out.

Don't get me wrong, it was a really fun read. However, I was really disappointed when (view spoiler)

Urasawa has pulled too much from the thread... It should have ended when it had to... For me the the story has lost all the interest.

I do love the sudden jump from December 31, 1999 to 2014. I remember it frustrating me no end when I was originally reading through them though! Now to wait for Vol. 4 to arrive :(

Me encanta cómo Urasawa se atreve a meter tantas líneas temporales en la trama y cómo parece que sabe adónde se dirige. Eso sí, voy necesitando un esquema. Kanna y compañía lo merecen.

Urasawa Naoki (浦沢 直樹) is a Japanese mangaka. He is perhaps best known for Monster (which drew praise from Junot Díaz, the 2008 Pulitzer Prize winner) and 20th Century Boys.

Urasawa's work often concentrates on intricate plotting, interweaving narratives, a deep focus on character development and psychological complexity. Urasawa has won the Shogakukan Manga Award, the Japan Media Arts Festival exc
