Young Frederick Douglass: Freedom Fighter was a great book about Fredrick Douglass's Young life. it is an inspirational story about how a young slave raised above his oppressors to fight for freedom. This book does a good job of showing this dark period in U.S history at the level of a child. It also shows how important education was and still is. It has wonderful illustrations that help show how things looked back in 1817. This book was very captivating and I would recommend it to any teacher who needs to explain this part of history.

Read this book with two of my Guided Reading groups. The students seemed to like it and it led to some good discussion. Tied in with our story of the week about Martin Luther King.
