Hi! Thanks for your question. :)

There is a secondary romantic plotline, but it's not the main focus of the story.

As for what is in it. The book features sexual banter, but no actual sex (though there are mild sexual scenes in the sequel). Having said that, the book does feature mention and depictions of sexual assault and attempted sexual assault. You can see a full list of trigger warnings on my website (https://yolandiehorak.com/faq/).

Hope that helps!(less)

In the fictional land of Ehrdia lies the Seven Kingdoms. One of these kingdoms is called Aelland where a powerful force-field stretches over the land preventing those inside it from leaving, and those on the outside from entering. This magical force is referred to as the Mantle, and at the centre of it all is a giant Monolith. Under the Mantle in the city of Roicester we meet Carabelle ‘Cara’ Lenoir who is actually the queen of one of the neighboring kingdoms, Mordoux. In Aelland however she is ...more

I love this book. The world building is amazing, and I adore how it’s not easily unpacked, it takes its time in revealing itself to you. It gives the story and world so much more depth done this way, and I really appreciate that. The multiple POV’s are fantastic, I love trying to figure out how each character will play a role in the story. This story is so twisty! Secrets and lies; who do you really trust??? I still don’t know and I need the next book to come out because I HAVE QUESTIONS. Not di ...more

Wow, just wow! I've never read steampunk fantasy before, and now I definitely need more of it!
The author, Yolandie Horak, was kind enough to gift me an e-copy for an honest review.

This novel is about a young royal in hiding, pretending to be a boy so that her enemies (including her father) can't find and kill her. She hides as a physician's apprentice, and only the physician and her sister know her true identity. The land she lives in is protected by a force field dome. No one can get in our ou

Can't rate 'cos I edited, but I will add that this novel has been one of the high points of my editing career. We've toiled many hours over the development, and I'm so happy for Yolandie that this dream of hers has finally come true. This is a wonderful, immersive steampunk-inspired fantasy adventure. ...more

I finished this book last night and couldn’t help but think about it all day. I loved so many things about it. The incredible world building. The characters described so brilliantly you feel that you know them. The strong female characters. I need to know how this end!!! Can’t wait for the next book in this series. Oh almost forgot to mention the bears. It has bears. Even if I didn’t love this book so much - I would read it for the bears!

Yolandie's writing is smooth and consistent. I thoroughly enjoyed being transported to Mordoux. The world building is vivid, strong, creative and imaginative. Throughout the whole book I could feel the mantle, taste and smell the slums and hear the war-cries.

Well done Yolandie, your writing is impeccable!

It's rare to say that a book has it all, but Yolandie Horak's debut novel does indeed have it all. In-depth world-building meets crisp writing and intriguing characters dealing with life and death; political intrigues and tightly woven secrets capture the characters and the reader in a web that keeps one glued to the text, eager to find out what happens next. The story is told through the perspectives of multiple characters, each with a different role in this society. Through their eyes we see t ...more

Whenever I see a novel that is highly rated and has a small number of reviews, I wonder whether the book is a hidden gem that no one has heard of, or if it's just those who know the author who are reviewing. I am very pleased to say that for 'A Study of Ash and Smoke' it is the first option!

The world building is not an overwhelming info-dump at the beginning (which many fantasy novels are prone to do) - this was much appreciated. The descriptions - whether to heighten the anxiety around some pol

This book marks the beginning of what I think will become an epic series. The characters are beautifully written and varied.
It combines dystopian, steam punk and fantasy genres to draw you into a world that is created with care.

Definitely a series to keep an eye on.

What a super read! This was gripping, full of adventure, had great character development, and a bit of a plot twist at the end. I could not put it down. Now I need the sequel!

This is a first novel for the author. Keeping that in mind I want to compliment her on the complexity of her writing. This is not something you will find often in first time writers. So well done on that. I initially found this novel difficult to get into. But if you manage to stick with it you will be rewarded with the promise of a great storyline. The entire first book is a build up of what has the potential of a truly amazing storyline.

This high fantasy setting is interesting and resembles e

DISCLAIMER: If you find depiction of attempted rape avoid this book. Though it is one scene towards the very end of the book, it is rather graphic in nature.

The general plot is a bit different compared to most mainstream fantasies, with elements of steampunk apart from traditional fantasy elements. This is something I appreciate.

The issue starts with the book dumping you into the world with little context. It talks or relationships without giving the reader context and this continues for good bi

Yolandie Horak can often be found typing away at the computer or nibbling at the end of a paintbrush. When not writing or making art, she spends her time cuddling her daughter and husband, reading, fangirling, or gaming.

She resides in Calgary, Canada, but misses the milk tart and koeksisters she frequently ate in her hometown of Johannesburg, South Africa. Her debut novel, A Study of Ash & Smoke,
