Jack's mother is restless. His sister can't decide which she prefers - sex or Einsteinian physics. His male influences are two consecutive crazy stepfathers, a conman employer, and an alcoholic friend and co-worker. Stuck in the strange town of Far Cry, Jack copes with the torments of adolescence.
Darkly comic and masterfully written, this is one of those books that defies categorization. Like a richer, more textured version of Confederacy of Dunces, with a bit of Thomas McGuane and Tom Robbins thrown into the mix. Its your classic, coming-of-age tale, like the journey of Holden Caufield, but in a warped, blue-collar Twilight Zone.
I loved this book and am saddened that it's been out of print for 30 years.
