August 6, 2011From a practical viewpoint, this seemed like the ideal book to take as my guide for my recent trip to New York. In fact, it covers only Manhattan, but that suited my purposes in any event.
The best thing about this is the useful schematic diagram of the New York Subway on the inside back cover – much easier to use than the unwieldy map available from the M.T.A. or the microscopic maps printed in many other publications. The street map was also useful, but rather strangely omitted 10th and 11th Avenues in Chelsea – the upcoming and fashionable district where we were staying!
The book is usefully divided into the various parts of Manhattan, with repeated street diagrams for specific localities. But, the book is far from comprehensive in its treatment of the various attractions in Manhattan – no mention, for example of Trinity Church Wall Street, or the U.S.S. Intrepid museum. For some reason, parts of the book are printed in horizontal format (the “where to eat and drink” sections) which makes it less easy to use. Also, the various parts are split up into almost random groups, which means that two neighbouring sights might be referred to in more than one place, and in entirely different chapters.
This somewhat strange layout and editing is a shame, since otherwise it would be a book that is both more logical and easy to use.

The spiral guides are my favorite guidebooks to stick in my purse when on a trip. They have a quick description, maps, pictures, phone numbers and hours of operations to many sites, restaurants and events. They are easy to stick in my purse or a cargo pants pocket for quick reference when out and about in big cities.

Excellent reference for the first-time traveller to New York. It has everything you could possibly want in order to plan your trip to the Big Apple. Lots of useful maps and references and brilliant photos.
