Francis of Early Documents presents a translation of the extant texts of the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries that present the life and writings of Francis of Assisi. The Saint includes The Writings by Francis, The Life of Francis by Thomas of Celano, The Liturgical Texts, The Life of Francis by Julian of Speyer, The Versified Life of Francis by Henri DAvranches, The Sacred Exchange between Saint Francis and Lady Poverty and Related Documents. Also included is a general introduction to the series by Regis Armstrong, helpful introductions to each section, colored maps, extensive annotation.
This is the single most comprehensive collection of the writings of St. Francis of Assisi that I've come across to date. Incredibly useful as an academic reference. This 640+ page volume includes not only the complete writings and fragments attributed to Francis, but also Thomas Celano's 'The Life of St Francis', the early divine offices and masses in honor of Francis, Julian of Speyer's 'The Life of St Francis', the entire versified life by Henri d'Avranches, the 'Sacred Exchange between St Francis and Lady Poverty', as well as papal documents relating to cannonization and early life of the order, and a variety of chronicles of the Fifth Crusade that relate to Francis and the visit to the sultan. Not a book to read through, but very useful as a reference. Documents in translation, some/majority footnotes in Latin. Complete documents NOT included here in original languages, only in English translation. Annotated, and overall excellent quality, but you have to be familiar with what the works are, as historical and hagiographic are mixed.
