From the moment I opened this book on my Kindle, until I closed it a few hours later, I was enthralled. A unique business (crime scene cleaning) with unusual owners and employees (ex-Navy Seal, woman in need of new lungs, an amnesiac), a crime syndicate I did not see coming--and well, let's just say the plot is not predictable. No spoilers from me.

The characters were well-drawn, quirky, and endearing (well not so much the some of the villains), but even the villains had great back stories. Not

What do Hawaii (everyone’s idea of Paradise) and Philadelphia (supposed city of brotherly love) have in common?

Take your time…Not food, not music, and certainly not the weather. Give up?

In Chris Bauer’s newest thriller novel, it’s the Hawaiian mob. Yes, in Philadelphia, for reasons that become clear as the reader quickly turns pages to find out why and who and how. The deft combination of quirky characters and dark humor with serious topics, such as immigration and the black market for organs,

Crime scene cleaners are private companies who work for the police, cleaning up the messy remains of murders and other unnatural deaths after the cops are done. But they have their shadows on the other side of the law, who work for the mob, hide murders, clean away evidence, and make bodies disappear. In the course of their work, the good cleaners can get tangled up with the bad ones. Then, sparks fly.

Philo is a retired Navy SEAL and the new owner of Blessid Trauma Services, a crime scene

Chris Bauer doesn’t disappoint in his latest crime fiction, “Hiding Among the Dead.” Filled with a unique cast of characters, Bauer’s witty dialogue and dark humor lighten up the world of crime-scene cleaners and underworld mobsters. Bauer’s writing is always on point, giving the reader an insight into what happens after the fact at grisly crime scenes. The reader will find themselves mired in the physical and emotional turmoil of all human tragedies. But it’s Bauer’s hand as a writer that will ...more

A cast of quirky characters in a one-of-a-kind plot that will keep you guessing until the end. Set in the grittier neighborhoods of Philadelphia, Bauer's novel takes us deep into the sordid world of crime scene cleanup and features a former boxer who can't escape his past, a young amnesiac eager to remember his, an organ-stealing doctor with little regard for the lives of his donors, a vicious Hawaiian gang--and that just scratches the surface.

Hiding Among the Dead is not your usual thriller.

Hiding Among the Dead my first read from author Chris Bauer. Well-written with intricately developed characters and a story-line with intricate twists & surprises as the tension & suspense ratchets up throughout the book’s length. 286 pages but reads even longer with the attention to detail written into the story. I can see a follow-up book in the future. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
