The fantasy element is dark, creepy, and so unique, the romance is not present in book 1, but there's definite potential romance(s) for books 2 & 3. From what I've read, no love triangles that are obvious in book 1! Hope this is helpful :))(less)

Thematically, Forest of Souls is about fighting to belong against every effort to push you out. It's about loyalty driven by insecurity and searching for self worth. It's about unconditional female friendship. It's also

Sirscha Ashwyn is an orphan intent on acquiring prestige and power by becoming the Queen's Shadow, who operates as the Queen's advisor and spy. Sirscha is a soldier in the Queen's Company, which is described as a "military finishing school." She has also already been tapped to train in secret with the current Shadow, raising her hopes that she'll be officially named the Shadow's apprentice any day now. But a routine trip to take criminals to the prison camp goes horribly awry, and her best ...more

I received an eARC from Netgalley for my honest review.

I DNFed at 34%, approximately page 136.

This book reads like a rough draft. I really wanted to like it. The premise was promising and sounded like it would be a darker ya fantasy with some political intrigue and interesting magic, but its just bad.

The world building is sloppy. Politics are handled clumsily and situations broken down into simplistic reasons. Its explained in the beginning of the story that the shamanborn suddenly became

Another Charlie cover that I let compel me. I should have known.

And yes if Charlie does art for a book Im gonna try it! Sue me.

Listen, I love Charlies art. Love it so much that it hypes me up for the books she draws covers for, but the last few that Ive tried where she was the cover artists, I wasnt too happy with.

This one included.

Sirscha wasnt a heroine who became REAL to me. I learned nothing about HER as a person. Her personality was so shallow and surface-level that the only think she

I will like to thank the publisher for sending me an advance reader copy, I was really excited upon receiving a copy and to be reading a book written by a Hmong woman. And you guys, the cover is so beautiful!

Forest of Souls tells the tales of Sirscha Ashwyn, an orphan who is currently enrolled in a military school called The Company. But what she really wants to do is be the next Queen of Evewyns Shadow. Sirscha is currently competing to be the Queens shadow Kenderas apprentice. The Queens

As someone who's not the biggest fan of spiders (I would say I don't like them but I want to respect them), I was very excited for a book with a spider plot in it. Ever since I saw the cover, I've wanted to read this book. I mostly knew that there was a Spider King and that's basically it. But that was enough to make me want to read it! Trigger warnings: gore, body horror

I don't know why, but I was surprised when I fell in love with this book. But it's SO GOOD. A lot

Sirscha Ashwyn is in the Queen's Army, training in secret with Kendara to become a Queen's Shadow. On a mission in the Queen's Army, Sirscha discovers that cocky Jonyah Thao is also an apprentice of Kendara's, and is being given higher priority tasks. With only a month left to prove herself to Kendara, Sirscha steals the note and escapes to a tea house with her friend Saengo, the future leader of House Phang.

This is the kind of fantasy I live for: dark and atmospheric, with masterful world-building, and a sense that there are deep, old secrets lurking beneath the surface. The MC, Sirscha, is such a compelling heroine: fierce and unyielding, yet hiding an unsure heart. She is a total badass in a fight, but she still has lots of room to grow emotionally, which makes for wonderful storytelling. And I am digging the potential romances that are set up in this book and cannot wait to see what unfolds in ...more

I really enjoyed this as my first read of the year. Forest of Souls is action packed, has incredible world building, and unique and interesting characters. Sirscha and Saengo have one of my favorite friendships I've ever come across in a YA novel. The pacing in this book was flawless, it was the perfect amount of action and exposition. The Dead Wood (a forest of trapped souls) was such a unique and terrifying concept, I really enjoyed any scenes taking place there. I do wish there was a bit more ...more
