I loved this book, and the entire series. Well written zombie books are hard to find. This book would be a thriller with or without the zombies. Throughout the series the characters have continued to develop to the point where they have come alive in the mind of the reader. The battle scenes are intense. The humor always lurking, creating laugh out loud moments during heart pounding battles. This is a great book and an amazing series. Read it.
I loved the previous book in this series “the fort” which was a dirty look at the underbelly of humanity. When trying to create a utopia there are always those who have little to contribute but want all the spoils of others. The dialogue in book 23 was excellent, every sentence had poise and purpose, every conversation had some form of meaning behind it which built up the tension and told a gripping and enjoyable story from start to finish.
The Bad - This book felt a little disjointed, almost like it was finished and then another 2,000 words needed to be added to “pad it out” so we ended up with some of the most infuriating dialogue and scenes rom this entire series. Anyone who has read this knows which scenes I am talking about but one example off the top of my head. This soup is well nice, said cookie, Well nice said Paula, well nice said blowers…etc. etc. etc. it was monotonous repetitive dross and when you have a group of characters all giving one or two word contributions to a conversation it only serves to remind the reader who is in the room at the time or part of the group and there are many other ways of doing this without having this style of writing which was massively over used especially in the first third of the book.
The orchard/Orgy etc. so almost a month after the outbreak and this? Seriously it was a bad idea and should not have been committed to page in my view. The idea of a bunch of eccentrics living in denial with strap on’s and fruit is just a bit batshit crazy even for the loyal followers of this series and then the stupid part with a massive drone flying through there window etc... To go from the previous couple of books which were excellent to this just felt like someone had said “Gay and Dick jokes are getting boring but we need to add more comedy” which was just bizarre and should really have been removed. I get the point of this storyline was to add carmen to the group and let her integrate and become one of the team but perhaps it could have been done in a different way which wasn’t so absurd.
The good – Despite those criticisms there was a lot of really good points to take away from this book, around 40/50% into the book the dialogue ramped up the pace and the tension mounted up as well, the scenes in the meeting room at the fort were excellent and played out well and the frustrations they were all feeling were passed onto the reader very well, the character development of Danny was very good and tappy’s backstory and relationship with Nick was warm and fun.
Character arc’s overall were handled well. The Paula/Roy situation was done brilliantly I thought, and the double drill by Blowers was also a great part of this book in my view. The Clarence story with the boat was very well written and probably the part of this book that I will remember the longest.
The Gregory/Boy/Cassey story took a very interesting turn which I wasn’t expecting and I’m intrigued by how that turns out.
I am a big fan of this series and I will continue to buy the next one and then the one after that and I hope there are at least another 10 books as well but perhaps RR needs a longer break between these books to recharge the creative juices because the first third of this book felt like it had been written in a hurry or a little half hearted.
If you haven’t already started the series, why the hell not?!? Warning this book comes with sneaky onion cutting ninjas! Never before have I been as invested in a series. The latest instalment of Mr Howie and the team! This book had me go through every single emotion there is, along with me calling mr Haywood a bastard several times! Starting out with politics and the discovery that some higher ups hid for three weeks. The dynamics have all changed again, with three new additions to the team one of whom wasn’t really developed this time. Finishing after another battle of epic proportions and more revelations that leave this book on another cliffhanger, cannot wait for the next instalment.
I love this book so much that I am going to purchase it because I read it on KU first. The writing in this book was brilliant, not a lot of action until the end but a lot of character development and character building. The situations in this book will make you laugh and cry and cheer. Not only was the story developed more but we got new characters whom I hope the author is going to keep. There are some interesting twists and turns in this book, and I found it the best one yet it’s unfortunate that will have to wait quite a while for the next one. But in the meantime I can go over the series from day one hopefully by the time I’m finished the next book will be out i’m telling you people out there this book was so good I read it in one sitting which means I was up all night. If you haven’t read this series please start start at the free copy so you have an idea and then go to day one and follow through. While you’re doing that you won’t have to wait for the next book like I will.
The Undead Day Twenty Four: Equilibrium The Undead #24 Sci-Fi R.R. Haywood ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
This book returned back to Howie and his team. It was nice to read his POV again.
Finally, some things about Howie and Dave were revealed, including Dave's connection to Howies dad. I'm glad because I was beginning to feel like I was left in the dark.
I really liked finding out how some of the characters had connections to each other without even realising it.
The Infection can affect people in different ways and another strain started to have it's own sentience and goals separate to the original Infection. I have a feeling that's going to make thing a lot more difficult, especially with finding the cure.
Carmen's character really grew on me. I hope she chooses Howie and his team when the time comes.
The ending was very good and it made me want to read the next book immediately.
I started reading this series at the end of March, finishing Twenty Four at the end of May; with a number of other books read and one abandoned, to not get to the end too quick. That strategy didn't work! Lots of twists and turns in this one, I read it in less than two days, whilst getting over my jet lag. I am now at a loss, having to wait for Mr Haywood to publish the next episode. Decided to stay in the genre and sample another author before going onto Mr Haywood's trilogy.... Make my day Mr Haywood, publish Twenty Five on my birthday in mid August, go on, I dare you, especially as I will be back in the UK then, having included a few days along the south coast to explore the locations mentioned in the book.
Thank you RR Haywood for leaving me on such a huge cliffhanger! Yes, i am being sarcastic 😊 In the last two months all I did was binge reading from The First Seven Days to Day 24. Imagine my horror when I searched for the next book to read and it's not there! I even decided to read another of your books The Worldship Humility, only to find you left me on yet another cliffhanger and I am now awaiting for you to complete book 2 from that series. I highly recommend people to read The Undead Series. It will have you laughing, crying, annoyed at certain characters, happy for certain characters and even the odd yelling at the book moment. Well done.
I was so confused with this book from the very beginning. I just finished book 2. Which was over 2,600 pages long. Then I immediately started this one. What the heck? Did I miss something. I went back and looked at the end of the bok I just finished. Book 3 starts off with Howie being with a different girl and no idea what happy to the other one from the first two books .Everyone is immune. Lily had all this happen to her and now is in charge of the fort and hates everyone and is now gay. It's like a whole book is missing between book two and three. I don't know if I want to read the rest because how many more times will this happen.
The Clarence thing. You see, it was a.Clarence thing, therefore it had to be just right. It started with a lump in my understand ended in loud hard sobs. This is the only series that has had me laughing with tears down my face and sore stomach from said laughing. But also left me with a broken heart at Lilly's attitude, her cold, I've attitude, specially towards Nick. I found myself wishing I was Paula when she told her to stop being a c...t and grow up. I can't wait for Day 25!!!!
You’re gonna end like that! No way! I’ve been really hating Lilly and all the secrets.. but it seems like secrets upon secrets upon secrets.. and everytime I think we’ve gained a little truth.. Whammo.. another character surfaces or changes dramatically! Ugh I love it but I kind of just want to know WTF is going on! And I hate major cliffhangers! Other than that.. I like the newbies and esp Our new mechanic with Nick.. will we find out more about Meredith? And why didn’t Blowers tell anyone he died 2 books ago and how he saw Blinky?
I didn't think I liked Zombie books - but this series has me completely hooked! The characters have all become my good friends, the storylines are believable & I really don't know what I will do when I come to the end of the series. Brilliantly written, my type of black humour, I have been driven to tears in fear for them (particularly Bear's/ Meredith's life before they found her - dog lover!) as well as dissolving into fits of laughter that have also reduced me to tears! Rich Haywood is a gifted story teller.
As usual Richard has filled this book with action! Characters old and new, so many changes but still the same amazing feeling of 'pack'. Great to be slowly getting some answers many of us loyal fans have had since the first week. This book definitely bigs up the newbies, Tappy, Danny and Carmen, great characters, I can't wait to see where they are taken. Overall yet another book of pure brilliance, zombies, gore and comedy.
Love, hate grief, suspense, action, blood bath, secrets and laughs! I f@#king love this series!!!
I cannot get enough of this series! I’ve done both the audio and written versions and they both completely consumed me. The only thing I can complain about with this book is that I’ve just finished it and now I have to wait for the next instalment. Thank you for another great read Mr Haywood!
Haywood just keeps getting better and better with this latest instalment of the undead saga. Characters are emerging that we'd only caught glimpse of in the previous books.plots and paths are starting to cross and intermingle. I might not agree with the path one is being drawn down but that only heightens the story more. I've patiently waited for this book only to read it way to quickly. I need more to devour asap.
With every word R R Haywood just keeps the excitement coming. We are back again with Howie, Dave and the lads and Lilly, Peter and the fort crowd and then he throws Henry, Carmen & co into the mix. So much going on it’s a hard book to put down. Well done Mr Haywood dying for the next instalment
Best zombie books ever, each one as good if not better than the last. This one had me experience every emoition going. You make such a connection with the characters that you feel they are real so you become totally invested. My kids are thrilled as well as they got to order pizza because mammy was reading and couldn't cook dinner, clean etc till I finished.
And the Boss pulls it out and puts the magic into words again!
What can I say? Had me laughing out loud on the bus again one minute and then had tears in my eyes the next! Just exceptional yet again. Only bad part, is gotta wait yet again for the next instalment of the best zompoc I've ever read! Keep it up Rich!
I must learn to read slower to savour these ... but the writing is so good, the pace so frenetic when in action, and the banter so spot on when they aren’t!!! No spoilers here ... but a few more twists for Mr Haywood to play out ... bring on the next one ;-)
Once again Richard doesnt disappoint . Heart wrenching ,exciting ,funny and an exceptionally good read ......is Once you start this series it drags you in and doesn't let go and constantly leaves you wanting more . Just p!ease not as long for the next one
This book brings all the major players back together and sets up the series up nicely for Howie and the gang to finally start getting some answers (maybe)! As always, a great mix of humour, adventure, action m, and even some romance (if you count boinking as romance;p). Loved it and can’t wait for the next one!
I have read and loved all of the unread series but I have a small gripe ,I feel the banter is just a little too much,I know it's their style but I find myself skimming over it just to get onto the rest of the book ,however it won't stop me reading any more of this excellent series
Dear Mr Haywood, please, please please could you lock yourself away in a room, don't eat don't drink don't shit don't fart don't see anyone don't sleep don't even think about any other projects or books or hobbies or even see your wife, kids family members, don't even look at your dog. Just keep writing more undead until your dead, thanks, Athey.
I’m wondering if there will be another book in the series as there was no conclusion to multiple threads running through the storyline.I felt that some character interactions tended to be repetitious and added nothing to the story and I found myself skipping whole sections.
It’s all been building to this! I absolutely love this series, I have laughed cried and gone through every emotion going. I would recommend these books to everyone who loves action, a great story line and wants to fall in love with the characters. #dickonastick #comewego #momoinnit #f**kitwewillwin #iamdave
I can't believe I'm still reading this series but it's so good I can't put it down. I didn't think it would get any better but it did. Day 24 was action packed. Some days were just okay but not this one. I'm running out of titles and good things to say about this series except that it's a must read.
Just finished reading all 24 books in about 3 weeks, plenty of time on my hands as I’m stuck on crutches at the moment. Didn’t bother to stop to review just kept on reading completely engrossed in the story and the characters. There must be another book soon, the story cant end were its at.
No spoilers, or detailed review. Just to say, if you haven't read this series and you love the zombie or dystopian genre, then this is a must. This is the 24th book in the series and I've rated 90% of them as 5* An outstanding, well written, full of heart series.
What a fabulous series this is. The characters are well rounded and believable, they make you feel for them and what happens to them. You feel their sadness when they loose one of the team. I can't recommend this series of The Undead enough. If you haven't read any of it the you really should, you won't be disappointed. I can wait to get reading the next one in the series when it comes out.
Not the best book in the series, but still very good!
It advances the story very nicely and I continue to love all the characters - looking forward to the next one! Worth 5 stars just for the Clarence boat scenes.
