James Davidge tells the story of the founding of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), the forerunner to the New Democratic Party of Canada (NDP). Despite my interest in history and Canadian politics I learned a lot from this short graphic novel that I hadn't already been aware of - like the fact that the party was founded in Calgary, or how founder J.S. Woodsworth compromised to bring farmers, workers and socialists into one political force. The story is semi-fictionalized, told throu ...more

A quick read, for sure. 1st Legion of Utopia deals with the context of, and the weekend leading up to, the founding of the CCF (later to become the NDP). a terrific survey of the movements that came together to form the CCF (Cooperative Commonwealth Federation) in Calgary in 1932 (which later became the New Democratic Party of Canada).
This should be used as a history textbook in Canadian middle schools.

Pretty good...a political primer for Canadian youth or anyone who knows little about the birth of Canadian socialism.

This graphic novel is a great way to introduce people to how the NDP came to be. As a Canadian with a casual interest in politics (at least on a federal level), this really helped me with learning a bit more about the political history of the NDP. This is a great reference for the history nerd, for those who are beginning to be interested in it and for teachers to help their students grasp this part of our national history.
