Sixteen year old Addison Monroe and her friends think they’ve hit the jackpot when they win a contest that will allow them to go on a televised ghost investigation with the nationally renowned TV paranormal investigative team, The Ghost Dudes. With cameras rolling, the two groups arrive at the infamous Meadowlark Asylum. Suddenly shut down nearly a half century before under mysterious circumstances, it’s become shrouded in stories and legends about the darkness, nicknamed Monster of the Asylum, that allegedly stalks its abandoned hallways. It isn’t long before Addison realizes something is terribly wrong. What was advertised as a Halloween night TV special takes on a sinister note when, as her team’s reluctant psychic, she begins to see visions that show what really happened all those years ago. Visions that warn her they are all in danger. Things escalate when one of her teammates suddenly disappears while the others, including members of The Ghost Dudes, slowly come to the horrifying realization that the legends about Meadowlark Asylum may actually be true. And the Monster won’t rest until it claims another victim. This is Book 1 in The Ghost Seekers Paranormal Mystery series.
Very, very scary. Evil in an old asylum. Famous ghost hunters and a group of teenagers spending the night. The scary stuff is overt not subtle. No suspense or build up. Just scary. I couldn't read this book at night. Very well written, three-dimensional characters and a straight-forward plot.
I first read the sample, then bought the book, and found it totally compelling. I needed no suspension of disbelief to comprehend the paranormal elements, which are so well delivered and interwoven with conviction. Characters are thoroughly delineated through their actions, converse, and internal dialogue; several experience character evolution, while some undergo character devolution with its resulting consequences.
Although the story line involves lots of hauntings, nevertheless these express realistically, and throughout the paranormal is interwoven with the past history and present circumstances of the building and its environs. The eponymous Monster is different than expected (and this is borne out by the suggestions of viewers who are in real time watching the broadcast of the ghost hunting investigation), yet its nature (past and present) worked excellently in the context and was very realistic and possible.
I did not realize until I had finished the novel (in one sitting) and read the two Author's Notes that the co-authors are themselves experienced in the field of the paranormal and of paranormal investigations. I now realize where the realism is derived from. I'm eagerly awaiting the continuation of this series.
I'll admit it. I love ghost hunting shows- but I frequently think a lot of the scares are faked for the ratings. This book takes those types of shows and puts one into a real haunted situation. Not only is the environment against the ghost hunters, but they are against each other, never knowing if what's happening is real or just another unscrupulous stunt from one of the hosts to appease the pressure the network is putting on them to garner higher ratings. Take all that and throw in an amateur team that wins a contest to investigate with the "pros" and drop them all in a creepy abandoned asylum that's had it's share of tragedy and local cover ups and you've got a genuinely interesting story.
Dialogue was decent. Each character had their own voice and believable motivations. Environment was dark, creepy, and oppressive. Monsters were spooky without being so over the top as to make you roll your eyes. The situations, from the behind the scenes elements I've seen of such shows, were believable.
All in all, an entertaining run through a spooky crumbling asylum where things really do go bump in the night.
I'm gonna put this one in my yearly Halloween rotation. That's the highest compliment I can give.
In the late 1800s you could be admitted to an asylum for being hysterical, for an unwed pregnanc.y. For being eccentric, or just being odd. A nationally renowned paranormal TV show launches a contest for ghost hunting teams to accompany them on Halloween night when the veil between this world and the underworld is at its weakest. A group of four teenagers win. They don't know that they will be in an abandoned asylum where many horrors were perpetrated. They won. Or do they?
I applaud your imagination and talented writing style in this book! Your characters are very believable and the story line had me "gobbling" up each line like hot buttered popcorn! I look forward to more "snacking" in your next novel.. I urge everyone that has watched a "ghost hunter" style episode on TV to tune in to this series---and enjoy yourselves! Thank you.
Read this in one sitting, could not put it down. It’s scary with a simple story line and great characters. The drama between the characters just added to the edge of your seat story line. The writing was fantastic and there wasn’t a dull moment.
This is truly an old fashioned blood and gore ghost story! For those who love a good late night can't sleep anyway read, this will keep you company in those wee hours!
Well written, kept me very engaged - hard to put down. I like the contrast of school aged people with adults ghosting hunting together. The history part of the location was good, but could have been a little more.
Really enjoyed this book. I don't like to be scared, so it was just the right amount of spooky for me. Would recommend all of the books in this series.
This book was incredible! I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I can't pinpoint how exactly but this book was unlike any other ghost story I've read.
Ghost hunters go live on tv exploring a haunted asylum. Egos get in the way, the psychic energy is strong & I can’t wait for the next book in this series!
