Written and published in England in the early 20th century, this is a classically written telling of the political life and times of Demosthenes, the 4th century BC Athenian politician, writer and orator. Professor Pickards approach is matter of fact, letting the story and its participants bring it alive. THere are wonderfully detailed notes to several of the chapters, allowing the author to provide the reader with even greater detail of the story and background. The central lessons and events regarding the decline and fall of Classical Greek political and cultural power are described, and Demosthenes is shown to have his faults as well as his glorious capabilities and accomplishments. In the end, Professor Pickard writes, his overwhelming dedication to the classic Athenian/Greek ideal of liberty and independence outweighed any and all his faults.....while the edition shown here is a republilshed paperwork, I was able to secure an original copy in leather binding, in great condition, which is now sitting on my bookcase ready for the next reading....
