The Awakening of Miss Henley by Julia Justiss is a 2019 Harlequin Historical publication.

Marvelous!

Emma had resigned herself to spinsterhood- quite deliberately. She plans to sabotage her fifth and final ‘season’ so that she may find a place of her own and proceed to do the work she feels passionate about. There is only one hitch in her plans- Lord Theo.

Theo is a notorious rake under pressure to finally settle down. He plans to skirt matrimony for as long a humanly possible. But he never toys

The Awakening of Miss Henley is the first in a new series by Julia Justiss called The Cinderella Spinsters. But the hero and heroine of this story actually make their debut in The Earl’s Inconvenient Wife as secondary characters. I enjoyed this book. I have read a number of Ms. Justiss’s books and haven’t been disappointed. She is very skilled at layering her characters and then gently peeling back the outward facade they carry to expose the inner vulnerable being within. I thought Lord Theo ...more

Occasionally I find a book that leaves me wanting more. This is one of them. If I didn't have a pile of books that I had already promised to read, I would have dived right back in and started reading from the beginning again. I loved the development of the relationship between Theo and Emma, their verbal sparring and the slow recognition of their attraction for one another. As Emma provokes Theo into exploring more meaningful options for his future, he comes truly alive for the first time in his ...more

The Awakening of Miss Henley is the first in the Cinderella Spinster series and is a great start. Three friends who have attended several years on the marriage mart have decided to eschew society and marriage to follow their own dreams. The first is Emma and Lord Theo's story. Gorgeous story! Emma is determined to live her life with her two friends independent of men. She has all her planning done and is ready to move on. She doesn’t believe she is beautiful enough to inspire any man to commit to her. Theo is a player. He is rich, titled and handsome. He doesn’t believe he has it in him to be married and faithful to one woman for life. They enjoy arguing with each other and find themselves battling their feelings fo each other.

The story is filled with lots of wit and

I like me a good Regency romance with a little bit of spice. However, I think spice was the main reason for this story and it barely made one jalapeno.
Miss Henley has been told that she isn't pretty enough for most of her life. Whether or not this is true, it has inhibited her enough so that she isn't planning on marrying. She doesn't really try to catch the eye of anyone during any of the seasons she attends. She has involved herself with good works and political actions, as far as a woman of

"Five seasons and still unwed. Not that she had not had opportunities to marry. She had not once been tempted to accept and her own mother described her as 'not pretty enough to tempt a rake and not rich enough to tempt a fortune hunter.'" paraphrashed but it really set the story going forward.
How can I best describe this utterly delightful story? Once I began the first page, I was immersed into one of the best stories I have read this year. I could only admire Miss Emily Henley as she would

Emma Henley, cruelly dubbed as “Homely Miss Henley” by society is in her fifth season and still unmarried. Truth be told, she has her own income, and has no interest in marriage, unless it’s a genuine love match. Since that outcome seems more unlikely every day, she’s determined to set up her own household, which she’ll share with her friends, while devoting her time and energy to her political activities.

First of all, I fell in love with Lord Theo. He is bright and funny and charming and very kind. Who would not fall in love with such a man? He is the youngest son of a marquess. There have been no expectations of him, and he has lived down to that idea. He hides the fact that he is not exactly who he appears to be to the world.

Emma Henley is a young women who has decided that she has spent enough time trying to be a success on the marriage mart. She has plans for her life. Although women are not

A fantastic start to a new series, The Cinderella Spinsters by Julia. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish. Julia knows exactly what her readers enjoy and delivers every time! In this story, you have two characters who see the world where they live completely different.

Lord Theo Collington is a younger son who has the world at his feet, a carefree rogue who loves the ladies as much as they love him. He is handsome, witty and can always be depended on to be entertaining. No one

I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

This book is part of the Cinderella Spinsters series featuring Miss Emma Henley and Lord Theo, secondary characters from Julia Justiss' book "The Earl's Inconvenient Wife." I found this book to be quite enjoyable. The banter between Lord Theo and Emma was funny. They were both characters who were easily likable and appealing. The storyline was well written and easy to follow. This was not the first book I've read by Julia

The first book in the Cinderella Spinsters series by Author Julia Justiss is a beautifully written romantic story. The old cliche' that beauty is only skin deep is very well written as Miss Emma Henley finds herself without the possibility of a marriage made from love, so she thinks. Being plain and unattractive, Miss Emma does not have any suitors and does not think she has any prospects. Being the unconventional lady that she is, Emma intends to set up house with her two best friends and ...more

Emily Henley's only desire is to finish this season, her last and live with her two best friends doing good for the unfortunate. An old childhood friend appears on the scene and both think the other has changed due to each projecting a different persona for the ton.
Lord Theo Collington enjoys their sharp exchanges and admires her much after learning the good works she did privately.

When I read historical romance, I often wonder what happens to those young ladies of the ton who aren't beauties. The Awakening of Miss Henely tells the story of Emma Henely, tall, plain, and unremarkable, who isn't interested in husband-hunting. Most men of the ton don't believe that a wife is an equal and would be supportive of her involvement in the reform movement. And Emma prefers writing letters to support reforms to help better her country. Lord Theo Collington is as uninterested in ...more

I received this book as an ARC in return for an unbiased review.

Miss Henley is plain, opiniated and forthright. Lord Theo is a rake and a gentleman. They have a friendship of sorts that benefits both as neither wish to marry. Their interactions make up the majority of the book. To avoid a spoiler, that's all I'll say about the developments.

Throughout the book, the characters remained true to themselves, yet neither remained static and their personalities developed and matured.

Five seasons is a long time…
Five seasons is a long time and for Miss Henley who is pretty sure that no one would want her. She is not rich, not pretty, and pretty much a spinster. Then Lord Theo enters into a flirtation with her. I love Lord Theo a rake and everyone knows a reformed rake makes the very best husband. These two go round and round each other. I think for Emma her self doubts are what got in the way. I know she had plans but there was more to it. I love how the author wrote her

Another delightful Regency from Julia Justiss about independent misses and the men who value them. What I enjoyed about this book was seeing how Theo's rakish life has its own constraints, expectations that color what his future will bring. We read so much about the barriers to women being independent and forget that men too were expected by their families to go into--or avoid--certain professions or lifestyles.

Well written and engaging, and I look forward to reading more about the Cinderella

Great start to a new series. Emma knows she isn’t pretty or rich enough to land a husband so she throws herself into her passion into good causes. Lord Theo is the younger son and a rake, with no plans to marry. During the season, Emma and Theo begin flirting as they spend more time together, they grow closer, could both find love without looking? Fast-paced read with lots of drama, banter and steamy chemistry. I liked it.

I'm a big fan of Julia Justiss. I love her writing and the Awakening of Miss Henley is a wonderful example of it. Her heroes are always men of honor, and naturally, sexy. Theo certainly is. And her heroines are never your ordinary Regency misses. Emma is definitely original and unafraid to go after what she wants. Even if what she wants means she'll be exiled from society. A great story with a happy ending that hits all the right spots.

Delightful.
After five seasons Emma is hopeful that her family will allow her to leave society and concentrate on the political causes that interest her. However before her friends join her in her new future, she is tempted to risk her reputation by indulging in the pleasures of the flesh with Lord Theo. Enjoyable story that kept me interested throughout.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Miss Emma Henley is still unwed after five seasons. She is rather plain and not rich enough to attract a fortune hunter. She has decided to live on her own with two of her friends when the season ends. Lord Theo is a rake and an excellent horseman. He has decided to change his ways and go back to his art. As these two meet, passions flair. Follow the twists and turns and bumps in the road for this couple.

Great start to a new series!

Emma and Theo were first introduced in another book by Ms. Justiss, and I'm happy to say I think their story is delightful. They become unlikely friends, trying to help each other achieve what they want, or are missing, in life. The slow slide into romance was just lovely, showing more depth to these characters. Highly recommended.

I received an ARC of this book, and am gladly leaving my honest opinion of the story. Honestly!

Looks like I'm in the minority. Truly disappointed with the start of this new series. Unlike other reviewers, I was bored with a main couple I couldn't connect with, grew impatient with their rambling dialogues along with their personal reflections that seemed to repeat themselves. I kept waiting for that something more, an added spark of excitement. I had hoped it would improve the further I read, but unfortunately Emma's "awakening" simply wasn't engaging nor thrilling.

Julia Justiss grew up breathing the scent of sea air near the colonial town of Annapolis, Maryland, a fact responsible for two of her life-long passions: sailors and history! By age twelve she was a junior tour guide for Historic Annapolis, conducting visitors on walking tours through the city that was a hotbed of revolutionary fervor.
