Even though he awakened feelings she never imagined possible, Gabriella now considers him an enemy. Can Max make the impossible choice between retribution or forever losing the only woman to ever touch his heart?
Though this book can easily be read as a stand-alone, most readers prefer to read the series in order.

I'm happy to say that I'm done with Collette Cameron's books for now. Her writing style doesn't sit well with me. The plot was interesting, so were the characters but she didn't do any justice with the way of writing. I'm really sorry for such strong criticism 🙏🏻
Gabriella Breckensole’s secret crush on Maxwell Woolbright, the eighth Duke of Pennington dies a swift death when she overhears him vowing to ruin her grandfather. From that moment on, Gabriella has avoided the duke whenever possible and has kept the knowledge of what she heard to herself. But unfortunately for her, Maxwell doesn’t seem to take the hint…
After finding his grandfather’s journal, Maxwell believes that Gabriella’s grandfather stole his grandmother’s family home from the duchy by cheating his grandfather, furthermore, he believes this act caused the demise of his grandfather and father. He wants vengeance and has come up with the perfect solution – at least perfect in his mind! He will marry the delightful Gabriella Breckensole and make her grandfather give him Hartfordshire Court as her dowry, in exchange, he will let them live there, that way everybody is happy and the estate is returned to the duchy, all he has to do is convince Gabriella that his way is the right way…
Gabriella cannot believe the gall of Maxwell, how dare he demand that she marry him and then threaten her with her grandparents with complete ruin if she doesn’t? Left with no choice, she agrees, but vows to make him live to regret his highhandedness! When she tells her grandparents of Maxwell’s plan, she learns the awful truth and is given the means to turn the tables on Maxwell, will she take the information and enact vengeance on the man that she once believed she could love? Or will Maxwell realize that Hartfordshire Court isn’t worth the price it will cost him to regain it…Gabriella’s love.
This was a well written, fast paced story with two very strong leads, who will lock horns several times before finding their HEA. The book has scandal, vengeance, secrets, lies, some amusing banter, a likeable albeit misguided hero, a very stubborn feisty heroine, warmish love scenes and very hard won HEA.

Series: Seductive Scoundrels #4 Publication Date: 6/26/19 Number of Pages: 201
This is a tale of romance, but it is also a tale of two men, from two different generations, who have/had revenge and retribution as their goal – no matter who else it might hurt or the long-term damage it might do. One sought revenge because of a personal hurt and one sought revenge for a hurt done decades earlier. Actually, it is probably three men’s revenge, but one is dead and his evil deeds still haunt those he touched.
Gabriella Breckensole has encountered Maxwell Woolbright, the eighth Duke of Pennington a number of times out in society and likes him very well – maybe she even has a bit of a tendre for him. Well, she did have a tendre for him until she accidentally overheard him vowing to take her family home and ruin her beloved grandfather. He spoke of some awful hurt her grandfather had done to his family, but she didn’t hear what. Not her sweet curmudgeon of a grandfather! After that, she wants no part of the duke no matter how many times he approaches her. Can’t he just take a very plainly worded NO for an answer? Apparently not.
Gabriella and her twin sister Ophelia were orphaned when they were five and have lived with their grandparents at Hartfordshire Court for the last fifteen years. They’ve never had a lot, but they’ve had all they need – including two people who love them dearly. Though she has always wondered why her grandparents never leave the estate or why they have never made any friends, she always just assumed they were solitary individuals who were just happier at home. Then, she heard the duke vowing revenge and couldn’t help but wonder …
Maxwell had the unhappiest of childhoods. Nobody has ever, in his entire life, told him that they loved him. He’s had no comforting embraces, no smiles, no kindnesses. According to him, he comes from a long line of unfeeling bastards. So, as their offspring, he’s sure that he is as cold as his ancestors and surely isn’t capable of love. His grandfather was a drunken, opium-addicted tyrant who took his own life and his father was a pox-ridden drunk and Max never understood why. Then, he found his grandfather’s diary a few months ago and it all fell into place – he understood – and he would have his revenge against Harold Breckensole for causing the deaths of his grandmother, his grandfather, his father, and his unborn aunt/uncle.
This is an exciting, well-written, fast-paced read and therefore I’ve given it 3.5 stars rounded up to 4-stars. That said – it is a story of revenge and they are my least favorite trope. I always have to wonder how any honorable person’s first thought for revenge can be to plot the demise of someone who is totally innocent and had no part in or knowledge of the events. It doesn’t matter if the revenge seeker (male or female) has a grand epiphany and changes their mind – even if they make a great sacrifice – their first thought was to harm a totally innocent person. In this case, the revenge seeker was a powerful duke with all of the resources and money in the world at his disposal. Why wouldn’t he seek a legal resolution or why not confront the individual against whom he wanted revenge? Anyway – I rated the book on the writing, pace, etc. and not whether I personally liked the trope.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Maxwell, the Duke of Pennington finds himself drawn Miss Gabriella Breckensole who is astonished when the enigmatic Duke of Pennington turns his romantic attentions on her. Debonair and confident, he set her heart fluttering from their first meeting. Far beneath his station, Gabby never hoped to win his favour, and she soon risks losing her heart to the roguish lord. Until she attends a house party over Christmas & accidentally overhears Maxwell vowing to return her familial home to his dukedom and learns his courtship is a revenge-filled ploy. Another lovely romance, Maxwell & Gabriella are drawn to each other but after the party she tries to distance herself from him but the attraction is strong. Maxwell has found evidence of her grandfather Henry’s behaviour but not everything is as it seems! Strong characters & witty dialogue all make for a very entertaining read, throw in a well paced story & you know you're going to love the story. This is the fourth book in the series & all the books do stand alone but we do get to catch up with characters from previous books & teasers are dropped for future books. I can highly recommend the author’s books as her turn of phrase is inspiring My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This was a delightful story about Gabriella and Maxwell. Gabriella, who has an attraction to Maxwell, Duke of Woolbright, is outspoken and impatient but she is also wary of the duke’s attention, as she is dowerless. Maxwell is also attracted to Gabriella but he is intent on using her for revenge. There are a number of secrets that are revealed throughout the story and some endearing moments. A very enjoyable read.
What Would a Duke Do?: A Regency Romance is the fourth book in the Seductive Scoundrels series by Collette Cameron. Although part of a series you can definitely read this as a standalone.
Miss Gabriella Breckensole and her sister live with their grandparents and have done since they were 5 years old when they became orphans. They have had a good upbringing and are happy women. Gabriella has a fancy for a particular gentleman that she has met at various social occasions. That man is Maxwell, the Duke of Pennington. He too seems to like her but before he has the opportunity to ask her grandfather if he could court her something dreadful happens...
Max finds an old journal of his grandfather's and in it, he discovers that Gabriella's grandfather is the cause of his grandmother, his grandfather, his father, and his unborn aunt or uncle's deaths. A nefarious deed was done and Max takes it upon himself to have revenge for what was done to them.
Max and Gabriella are at the same social event when she overhears him telling friends that he is going to do everything in his power to ruin her grandfather including taking their home, no matter what it takes. From that moment she despises him and not only is she upset to think that her grandparents might have done something to warrant such revenge, she is also upset because she really had fancied him and now her desires for a possible future with him were non-existent.
That's what she thinks. It turns out that part of the revenge Max wants to do is to marry Gabriella and have her grandfather use their home as her dowery. He thinks that will be the easiest part of the plan because he knows there is an attraction between them both. What he doesn't understand is why suddenly she has become very cold towards him and tells him that she isn't interested in seeing him ever again. Of course, he can't let that happen because she is part and parcel with gaining his revenge against her grandfather! Besides that, he really does have feelings for her, ones that make his plans difficult to go ahead with. But he owes it to his family and he won't let them down.
It was hard to like Max to begin with because of his vengeful plans. He comes across as a wonderful gentleman until you realise how far he is going to go even if it hurts the woman he is starting to care for. Even though I understood why he felt the need to make her grandfather pay it certainly didn't make it right. Will he redeem himself and become a proper hero that I can admire?
This story isn't cut and dry either. There is an unexpected twist towards the end that had me close to tears. I am glad to say that although there was the dark element of blackmail and revenge there were also some lovely light-hearted moments between Max and Gabriella because despite what she secretly knew about him, and despite what Max intended to do there is a huge amount of attraction between them that they can't help but give in to. They have some very passionate kissing sessions and they are just perfect for each other if only he could give up his idea of vengeance. How can this story end without somebody having a broken heart? You will have to read it to find out. You certainly won't be disappointed. I wasn't.
Dash it to ribbons! Fool, Ninny, Goose Cap! I so look forward to new stories by Collette Cameron! She always has a new word or saying I adore! Oh yes cherie, What Would A Duke Do to get revenge for a long ago misdeed against his grandfather. Marry his grandaughter? What would he do when he found himself longing to kiss her or finding her hiding in the woods, scared when her coach broke down! "Even rumpled, frazzled, her hem soiled, and dirt clinging to her gown, in the fading light she was a radiant jewel. a forest nymph: mysterious and untamed and utterly bewitching." Max was internally waging a war with himself over his attraction to Gabriella, the grandaughter of the man he wanted to ruin and get back the estate he had taken from his grandfather years ago. Gabriella had long been having feelings for Maxwell, the Duke of Pennington until she overheard him disparaging her grandfather for how he had ruined his family and now Max was bent on revenge. But when he turns his attention on her, she is determined to keep him at arms length. Oh yes with his shock of midnight hair and unusual eyes, one blue and one green, a granite jaw and slashing blade of a nose. Yep I could see it was not going to be easy! Seriously when I started the first page I knew I was not going to be able to put it down until the end. Thus is my life when I pick up a book of this wonderful author's! A story of a misguided revenge, a truth that would eventually come out and a handsome man, okay outstanding!, attracted to a beautiful girl and she to him. Much more to it than that but I truly loved these two characters that came alive in my imagination, who I will be thinking about for awhile. So what will a duke do in the end? Trust me, you want to find out!!
He was someone she thought she could love until she overheard a horrible promise he made. He was coming to care for her even though she was the granddaughter of his sworn enemy. Things aren’t what either of them believe but can either one handle the truth? And will it make a difference in their feelings for each other? You can find out in this delightful tale written in Collette Cameron’s witty style; but beware she has thrown in a few hankie needing moments that you won’t to miss.
About the same as the others in this series. Non-rake H, dual povs, one of the MCs has an epiphany before it’s too late. Some traitorous body syndrome but the h was pretty strong. Decent novella to fill the time between books.
Note: read Seductive Scoundrels #3 for 2nd x on 05/06/22.
DNF @ 34% on book #4. Readers met this couple in book #3 of the Seductive Scoundrels series, @ a Christmas house party hosted by the Duke & Duchess of Sutcliff.
Book #4 opened, in a new scene to readers, with 3 dukes conversing at said house party. Max, Duke of Pennington, was attracted to twin, Gabriella, granddaughter of a gent farmer, Harold. However Max vowed revenge on this man.
Now we joined everyone in March 1810, onward. Gabby & Ophelia, twins soon to turn 21, lived w/ their grandparents for the last 15 yrs. Grandpa, a pinch-penny, owned ancient coaches, which needed replaced. Gabby and the coachman returned from Gabby's visit to a friend, had a coach accident. Did Grandpa care RE family safety in his coaches? G'Pa complained of the cost of everything. G'Pa & the H ex- pressed animosity toward each other.
Readers saw grumpy Gabby, Grandpa & Max. The MCs each ruminated too much about past/present perceived slights. I lost interest.
What Would a Duke Do is book 4 in the Seductive Scoundrels series by Collette Cameron. I really enjoyed this book. This is one of my favorite romance tropes - enemies to lovers. Cameron paints a delightful picture adding humor in splashes here and there. I enjoyed Maxwell the Duke of Pennington’s character. He is funny and droll at times in his verbal sword playing with the heroine Gabriella. “How could she ever have thought the Duke of Pennington amusing or charming? Enthralling. Fascinating. Wholly extraordinary. His black lashed eyes were quite extraordinary. Never before had she seen anyone with two different colored eyes. They enhanced the air of mystery surrounding him. As if he were privy to a secret no one else knew. She’d seen it in the way he observed her through his heavy lidded smoldering eyes.” Gabriella is fiercely loyal to her family but finds herself inextricably drawn to her enemy the Duke. Loved it!!! I was gifted a copy of this book.
Collette Cameron does it again!!! What Would a Duke Do is book 4 in the Seductive Scoundrels series. Though in a series this story can be read as a stand alone. This is one of Collettes darker regencies and the enemy to lover story is quite the battle. There are so many past dark secrets that it hits you by surprise as each one is revealed. Collette is one of the best writers of our time and I just love anything she has written. She never disappoints. This original story is not only a “can’t put this book down” but is truly creative. This story has a family’s love, dark secrets, great banter, eavesdropping, devotion, an accident, revenge, seduction, rescue, unwanted feelings, confusion and love. I highly recommend this book as you won’t be disappointed.
***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.
Gabriella took notice of Maxwell, Duke of Pennington, and it made her heart beat faster. But then she overheard him telling his friends that he would get his grandmother’s ancestral home back come hell or high water. The problem for Her was that it was her grandparents now! Gabriella has sparked interest in Maxwell since he first laid eyes on her, but her sudden animosity confuses him. He also must get revenge for the wrong done to his family and get his ancestral home back where it belongs. Collette Cameron weaves this story together brilliantly! What would a Duke do? Collette will show you!
If you’re a fan of enemies to lovers, this is for you! Maxwell, Duke of Pennington seeks revenge against Lord Breckensole for causing his grandfather to lose his wife’s dear Hartfordshire Court. Gabriella overheard him speaking of his plan against her grandfather to his friends. Let the game begin she thought. This is a absolutely delightful read that involves witty banter, misinformation of old truth, anger, lies and, in true Collette Cameron fashion, love. The characters are wonderful and well developed. You will fall head over heels for Maxwell as I did. I highly recommend this as well anything written by her. Impatiently waiting for the next one. A five plus star read.
A simple flirtation becomes more between Gabriella and Max, Duke of Pennington at a country house party, until she overhears his vow of revenge against her grandfather. Now she must guard her heart against a man she could love. Collette Cameron has a way of rounding out her characters that gives them more depth. You can't help but feel the emotional turmoil Gabriella and Max go through for an HEA. A nice, quick read for an afternoon. Given a copy by the author for an honest review.
Another very entertaining read in the Seductive Scoundrels series. Maxwell, the Duke of Pennington, is a man with only one thing on his mind - revenge. Gabriella Breckensole is a woman who is trying to protect her family and her home. Ms Cameron has once again lead us on a wonderful journey of these two finding their way to love. These characters are well written and the story timing is also excellent, making for a very enjoyable read. Highly recommend. I was given an ARC for an honest review of this book - lucky me!
A historical romance in which Gabriella overhears Maxwell say something vengeful about her grandfather. Her crush on him is quashed. Maxwell however, continues to pursue her. This story is about generations of revenge and how it affects the innocent. A good story with a good ending. I enjoyed it.
Maxwell, Duke of Pennington, is bent on revenge for what Harold Breckensole did to his family. What he isn't counting on is Gabriella, Breckensole's granddaughter.
Maxwell or Max, is a duke, which is clear in the title of the book. Yes, he's wanting to exact revenge for what Gabriella's grandfather did to Max's family, even if it didn't affect him personally. It's a matter of honor for him, but oh what a tangled web we weave when we set out to deceive. The secrets that were revealed were damning and painful for both Max and the Breckensole's.
With one blue eye and one green eye and built like a brick house, he is something to behold, but there is so much more to Maxwell. He's witty and intense yet sensitive and smart. At times my heart broke for him and the way he was treated when he was a child. It left him a little vulnerable, instead of hard and callous like his ancestors had been. I loved this guy from the very start of the book.
Gabriella was a bit enamored with him, but when she overhears him announcing to some friends that he was going to take her home, it was a deal-breaker. She avoided him and in the times they did meet, she was snappy and rude. He asked her numerous times, "What did I do to offend you?"
There was no chance for them to ever have anything together. He was a duke and she was a commoner and nobility didn't marry out of their stations nor did they humble themselves to be benevolent to people who weren't nobility. It was scandalous. Max didn't care about any of that. He knew what he wanted and he was going to get it...or was he?
I loved the twists and turns in the plot and I loved the characters. I felt for Gabriella and her twin sister, Ophelia, because their grandfather was so frugal. They often went without, but they'd never lacked love or basic necessities. Both girls were happy and included in most everything. Max was raised by a stern father who was abusive to him before finally sending him off to boarding school. The contrast between the characters in that respect was clear and, considering how they were raised, they could have been very different people.
This is a story about love healing all, forgiveness, redemption, and even humility. It was beautifully written and left me with a sigh of satisfaction at the end. The story was fantastic, the characters compelling, and it was a great read overall. It had some real feel-good moments and a touch of steam.
*I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily left a review.
Oh my, Collette Cameron has created a heady tale of misplaced revenge in this enemies to lovers romance. Maxwell Woolbright, Duke of Pennington, wants to regain the part of his estate lost years before by his grandfather in what was a crooked card game. Unbeknownst to him, Gabriella Breckensole, the granddaughter of the man who won the duchy’s land, overheard Max’s vow to regain the land. What follows is a dance of wills between Gabriella, who wants to protect her grandparents and doesn’t want anything to do with Max and his plans, and Max who endeavors to use Gabriella as a pawn to wreak vengeance against her grandfather. Despite the fact that the story focuses so much on Max and his plans for revenge, Collette Cameron was able to lighten the mood of the story with our heroine, Gabriella. I felt like it was a yin and yang relationship between the two. The dialogue that went on between Max and Gabriella was engaging and it was hard not to like him, even though he was such a blackguard. Max had well-laid plans, but secrets were revealed which made him rethink a lot of his motives and actions that were undertaken. This was a great read, a very good romance, and a story of redemption for Max and Gabriella.
I was gifted an ARC of this work and have also purchased it. Any opinions in this review are voluntary and my own.
What Would a Duke Do? by Collette Cameron is the fourth book in the Seductive Scoundrels series and definitely worth reading if you love Regency romances. I absolutely loved Gabriella and Maxwell's love story! Gabriella Breckensole has developed feelings for Maxwell Woolbright, the Duke of Pennington, but that comes to a screeching halt when she overhears him one night telling his friends that he plans to reclaim Hartfordshire Court along with destroying Gabriella's grandfather in the process. When Maxwell started wooing Gabriella it was all part of his plan to get his family estate back and destroy the man he blames for the losses he suffered as a boy, but the more he has spent time with her and got to know her, the more he has come to care for her. Now in order not to hurt her anymore, he must walk away from the only person he has ever really loved. I'm looking forward to reading more books in this wonderful series!
I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
You have to love how Ms Cameron creates her characters with wonderful names and vocabulary that keeps you smiling. They make the story so much more enjoyable to read. There is humour all through her stories and this one is no different. I love Ms Gabriella’s strengths, courage and family loyality and Maxwells willness to accept the heart is more important than revenge. I also like low the new few books have been set up with more wonderful characters that will have you waiting for the next excellent read. There is no sex in this book but lots of kisses and romance. I received this book as an ARC.
Loved the story of Maxwell and Gabriella! He's hell bent on revenge for Gabriella's grandfather "stealing" the manor they live in from Maxwell's Grandfather and using Gabriella to accomplish that. The twists and turns that follow were fun to read as well as Gabriella trying to always take the high road in any situation. I liked that she slowly fell in love and we got to watch. Loved the story and the ending was perfect! Thank you for the advanced copy, and the ending sentence of the book was perfection!
Cameron never disappoints. In this story, she not only tells a story of a love that can never be, but she is excellent at unraveling the many secrets between animosity of the two families, one by one. You never anticipate what is going to happen next. I received an ARC of this must-read.
Again this author did not disappoint. Engaging from the beginning, read it in one sitting. Not hard to do with Ms. Cameron’s books. Great story. Made me cry in places. That’s how I rate a book, if it can me laugh and or cry, it is perfect.
I love this book and series. I can't wait to see which duke will find love next. She the granddaughter of the man the duke is seeking revenge again for the wrongs he done to the dukes family and he going to marry her if she willing to or not.
This was one of those unique kinds of stories that stands out amongst the crowd. Maxwell isn't necessarily a villain although at first he is bent of revenge and making Gabriella's grandfather suffer - he soon realizes the easiest way to accomplish the goal of getting the house and lands back is by staying in Gabriella's good graces.
I would have liked to have seen a bit more of their interactions at the house party BEFORE she overhears him - what attracted her to him in the first place? I feel like if we had gotten a sense of her true feelings (being shown rather than her telling us later), his deception would have meant more. As it stands, it was amusing more than anything else watching him first act the part of a besotted fool and then later on become one - while she holds him at arms length and stops just short of being unforgivably rude. Gabriella was certainly a heroine with a backbone, and I enjoyed her spunk just as much as I enjoyed watching Maxwell try and navigate the minefield that was their relationship.
I think one of my favorite parts about this story was the way the author managed to find closure for everyone - while I loved the idea that Maxwell finally seeing reason and realizing that it didn't matter who owned the land so long as she was happy with him, I think her grandparents needed to impart the knowledge they had to help him heal. At that point it wasn't about the wrong that been done to the two old men - but rather the one that had been done to him. I feel like being armed with that knowledge, it would help him become a better man and break the cycle that started with his grandfather.
I do agree with what I have seen in some other reviews about this one being a little slow to start, but once it does I was thoroughly engrossed by these characters and this story. I would definitely read more of this series and more from this author!
This was a fun, jammed packed book with all the things I love; scandal, witty bantering between H/h, lies, romance, feisty/strong heroine & a handsome/endearing hero. They will bicker & disagree several times before they finally reach their HEA.
Maxwell Woolbright, Duke of Pennington has been a secret love for Gabriella Breckensole until she discovers his plan to ruin her grandfather. She wants nothing to do with him now & ignores him completely but he doesn't even realize it is happening.
Maxwell found her grandfather's diary & he believes Gabriella's grandfather had managed to purloin his grandparent's family home by cheating his grandfather & Maxwell felt the stress of the loss eventually caused the death of his grandfather & father.
Maxwell has a plan - marry Gabriella & ask for the family home to be returned to the duchy in place of her dowry & her grandparents can continue to live there. His blackmail leaves Gabriella no choice other than agreeing to the marriage but she is not happy. She informs her grandparents Maxwell's plans & they divulge the truth of the matter - she now has her own ammunition to use against Maxwell or will she? Read the book & find out what she does - it is a really entertaining story with great characters!
I was gifted this ARC & have voluntarily read, reviewed & recommended it!
