A wise guide for moving confidently through the seasons of a writing life. Part memoir, as the author shares eloquently from her own experiences. Part nurturance, as she encourages writers through self-care rituals, insights into the ebb and flow of a creative practice, and strategies for continuing with pen on paper no matter the barriers. Highly recommended!

Pub Date 15 Oct 2019.

Thanks to the author, Roost Books and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are mine.

For the writer wanting more than to simply get a book published, who wants to have a writing life, one that endures through the years, this book is full of sound advice about the ebb and flow of creativity, the seasons of writing life, and how to keep going. It’s not a how-to manual, but a companion to the writing life that ultimately lets the reader know she’s not alone on this writing path and that she truly is worthy to walk it.

I received a DIGITAL Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

From the publisher, as I do not repeat the contents or story of books in reviews, I let them do it as they do it better than I do 😸.

For awhile now I’ve wanted to write a book. Not with the intent of writing the next NYT bestseller, but because I’m a person who feels deeply. Who processes my thoughts and feelings on the page. I have a story that I know is worth sharing, but that I’m not sure the people in my life would be receptive of hearing. I keep telling myself I’ll at least get it on the page and it won’t matter if anyone ever sees it, (and there are many pages of it written), but I don’t know what it

Gulotta's book takes a refreshing approach to writing that tailors to those seeking to (or struggling with) following the writer's path. Particularly relevant for mothers who long to write but struggle to find the time amidst the endless demands of motherhood, or for those who live full and busy lives but wish they were writing more, Wild Words offers beautiful prose, a relatable perspective, and actionable tools to help writers put pen to page. This book is not a how-to guide on writing, but ra ...more

I read Wild Words during a roadtrip through the Texas countryside, pausing in the passenger seat to write down especially good passages or jot notes around the gentle prompts. This is a book that may be savored slowly, ready for you when you need it, but Nicole Gulotta's tone, careful details, and constructive ideas create a breezy momentum. I appreciate her realistic consideration and embrace of different seasons in one's writing, shifting modes as needed, and returning to things that restore o ...more

I was privileged to read an ARC of Wild Words: Rituals, Routines, and Rhythms for Braving the Writer’s Path. As a writer I thoroughly enjoyed the suggestions Ms Gulotta made for how to structure time for writing. One of my take aways from reading this book was her chapter on how to plan. I have heard this many times over my years of writing yet never saw a concrete idea of what a plan would look like. This is very helpful! Once read through, the book is laid out so that each chapter can be read i ...more

Nicole Gulotta has perfectly captured the writer's journey in this book. This isn't a prescriptive how-to manual or a straightforward series of steps to take that will lead you to your writing dreams. Instead, Wild Words describes the circuitous path that all creative work takes, from the exciting Season of Beginnings to the untethered Season of Liminal Space. These are roads every creative walks over and over again, circling back through territory we thought we were past as we make the hard jou ...more

I was lucky enough to read an advanced reader copy of Wild Words, and I was absolutely blown away. This book felt like advice from a dear friend giving me permission to believe all the things about writing I had hoped were true. The metaphors throughout were so artfully done. The vulnerability in the stories and the wealth of information shared amazed and impressed me. If you are a sensitive or introverted person who dabbles in writing, makes a living writing, or just enjoys learning about the p ...more

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC of Wild Words: Rituals, Routines, and Rhythms for Braving the Writer’s Path in exchange for an honest review. Whether you are a beginning writer or experienced and looking to get out of a slump, everyone will enjoy the gentle words of Nicole as you wander down the writer's path. She takes time to reflect on common roadblocks and sprinkles in approaches and strategies for each chapter along with a creative activity. I appreciated that she takes so much ins ...more

Wild Words is about the seasons in a writer’s life, through ups and downs and rough transitions, and is so accurate and heartfelt that at one point I sat up and said, “That’s me! She’s describing me!” This book is about acknowledging and honoring each season in the writing life, and looking at how to move forward. This book will now live on my desk, within easy reach while I write, and I look forward to referencing it in years to come as I grow as a writer. Full of personal stories, kind advice, ...more

Wild Words: Rituals, Routines, and Rhythms for Braving the Writer’s Path is a beautiful book that will help writers at any season of writing they’re in. It’s a book that you can read all the way through, but then go back and refer to the specific season you’re in. Right now, I’m both in the season of liminal space or transformation and the season of finishing. I know I will return to the wisdom of this book again and again as I move through different writing stages. Exactly what any writer needs ...more

I had the wonderful opportunity to read an advance copy of Wild Words. I truly enjoyed this book and take it to heart as a writer and self-care advocate. As a poet (and emotional human being), I sometimes find myself in a rut between seasons, challenged by how best to continue my writing and balance all other aspects of my life. Nicole's book helps provide shared experiences, support, and new ideas for "braving the writer's path". Her words are so easy to read and provide ease and hope as well a ...more

This book is an excellent resource for writers seeking guidance on sustaining a creative lifestyle. Broken down into the various seasons of the writing process, Nicole guides her readers from finding time to draft those first words to preparing to share their work with the world. As a working mother who writes on the side, I especially found useful her tips on “writing in the margins” while raising young children. An excellent resource for new and experienced writers to consult throughout the wr ...more

This book is heartfelt and wise, an engaging story and a resource to be actively used as one travels the writer's path. Full of encouragement, I often felt "recognized" within these pages, finding myself frequently nodding in agreement as I read. Deeply conversational, without being annoyingly self-absorbed or preachy, Nicole Gulotta hits just the right notes in this book.

There is something here for writers at every stage of their career.

This book found its way to me at a particularly meaningful time, just as I was reestablishing my own writing rituals and goals. In this vulnerable phase (a familiar one I've found myself returning to over and over again), I often hungered for encouragement, and I found it here in these pages. I loved the framing of a writer's life as one lived in seasons and how in thinking this way, it allows us to forgive ourselves for being less productive when priorities shift. Books like Bird by Bird and Wr ...more

I found this book delightful and refreshing. As one reviewer pointed out, it is not a book ABOUT writing, but it is definitely a book FOR those who write. It is full of inspiring quotes, stories, and lots of suggestions for following the seasons of our own writing lives. If you are a writer, published or not, this book will feel like an old friend. I found the stories and suggestions comforting, practical, and motivating.
