One of the best things that DeCarolis does with his debut YA novel, "Coywolf," is to keep it grounded. While magic is a very important component, it does not dominate this story, nor does it demand the reader to take flights of fancy culled straight from the WB Channel. Instead, the adventures of Jackson Porter are rooted in the locked psyche of your average teenager.
