OHKUBO Atsushi

Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.

Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.

5/5 Stars (%90/100)

One of my favorite volumes in the series because Joker and Benimaru are my top two favorite characters. It looks a bit like a fan service but the author did a good job getting these characters together. Joker who does not belong to anyone or anything, who also searches for the truth, and on the other hand, Benimaru who believes in Asakusa, its people and himself, also happens to hate the Church. The fight scenes were brilliant and we finally learn Joker's past as well as his true powers. Apart from these, the truth about the Church is also revealed. In Fire Force, the secrets' secrets' have secrets. Whenever we learn more, we also learn that there is more to learn. Like Joker and Licht, we, as readers, are also searching for the truth.

I read a digital copy of this book.

I can't settle for some vague concept revealed to us by a God, only the real answer can surpass God. It is the only truth.

Okay and suddenly my love for Fire Force has been reignited.

We get a team-up of my two favourite characters in this one, Benimaru and The Joker, as they hatch a plan to infiltrate the Holy Sol Temple in order to find the secret scriptures and learn the truth about the church, especially after Company 8 discovered the secrets on the Chinese Pennisula (which they've been told they have to keep a secret for a minimum of three years). They enter the Nether beneath the temple and encounter the Holy Sol's Shadows, an elite force of fighters confined to the shadows who help protect the temple and its secrets and it is here we learn about The Joker's past. As an orphan child, he was brought into the group where he was trained and abused until his escape, and since, the Shadows have haunted him, ensuring he can't return to humanity peacefully.

This volume was filled with fluid fighting scenes, drama, emotion and all the things that made me interested in Fire Force, to begin with. In this series, the secrets have secrets. Nobody is who you think they are, and the volume ends with an unlikely person actually becoming an ally. This volume made me so eager to get back into this series I might just try and keep the momentum going now.

Volume 15 is almost one long “investigation” and or fight of a branch of the Temple of the Holly Sol Church by the Joker and the Captain of Company 7 Benimaru Shinmon. They go looking for trouble and or information about the history of the church and several fights happen. The fights are actually interesting and well done. After a lot of fighting they encounter the Captain of Company 1 who gives them information. The information might not be what they wanted but seems to point at other places to investigate. The other thing we learn is the Joker used to be a member of a special assassins dirty wet works group for the church. Not only does this group do horrible things in the name of god the leader we meat likes to abuse and molest the children he is training. Ick.
Anyway, another solid story. Not only that but the plot really advances.

As the cover suggests, Joker finally emerges from the shadows to play a more open and direct role on the plot. Seemingly, he convinces or perhaps tries to convince everyone’s favorite bad boy captain, Benimaru, to participate in his anti-Holy Sol Temple crusade.

As was implied by the previous volume, the Holy Sol Temple and its symbol, the power generator and stabilizer of the resurrected world, Amaterasu, may be powered by people, a truly nefarious and stunning revelation indeed. Perhaps there is some truth to that as the secrets of the Holy Sol Temple were heavily guarded and perhaps rooted in lies tied directly to the person described in the previous arc who appeared during the great cataclysm.

Overall, it is a wonderful outcome and the battle that encapsulated the reveal as well as Burns appearing was fantastic. Joker’s ability was pretty coo, his backstory was emotional, and his vengeance was exceptional.

End of volume teasing of a potential plot to take things to the source, Hajima, makes the next volume potentially interesting. I can not wait to read it.

As with the previous volume, it’s got a smaller arc that further unfolds the core mysteries of the series. This time though, it focused on some characters that were out of the spotlight for too long, and it was very refreshing. After seeing some rather close and difficult fights, it was nice to see some with a decent power differential again.

The setup for the next volume, as always, is intriguing. Can’t wait to see where it goes.

Vol. 15 (Issues 124 - 132)

Benimaru has become my favorite character!

Tired of all the secrets, Joker teams up with Company 7's Captain Benimaru to fight a common foe: the leaders of the Holy Sol Temple! Together they fight their way into the Temple and enter the Nether. While underground, they encounter the Shadows of the Holy Sun (Assassins for the Church). At the end of this volume, another story arc begins as Company 8 prepares to investigate Haijima Industries.

Ohkubo really knows how to write characters. Joker only had twos appearances and I already love him and enjoy a lot to see his past. This volume was way better than the previous simple because had less information, hence easier to understand what’s happening in the world.

And just as more secrets or revealed more questions arise. Joker takes center stage for the first time and gets some awesome backstory. The fights are very nice this would have to be the darkest the manga has gotten thus far. Looking forward to the next volume as always!

Wow, Joker used to be part of the Holy Sol Temple! And Hajima is with the evangelist!

Why specifically 3 years....? That seems a random number....

Postanawiają oni dość bezpośrednio i frontalnie zaatakować kościół.

The fight for the truth is barely starting.

Great volume overall. So many thing happening, we're back in Tokyo and there's no time for rest. Great to see and learn more of Joker. Such a cool character, shrouded in mystery.

The author really knows how to do fight scenes, they are incredible. Talking about fight scenes, Benimaru Shinmon is back and that makes me so happy :D

That ending was great, a new arc starts and i'm can't wait.

Secrets, secrets, and more secrets all involving corruption, secret factions of organizations, lies, spies, and the impersonation of an important historical figure. Geez, how deep and dark do these things go?!

I'm left asking the same question as Joker: WHAT IS THE TRUTH?

This series has 34 volumes.
