We didn't actually get the Musashi vs Inshun rematch where been waiting for but we get some awesome prelude to a upcoming fight. This volume is more of a physiological battle between the fighters and some well written philosophy about swordmanship/martial art.
This is the most intense prelude to a swordfight ever. This is a character driven volume as the supporting characters are fleshed out further. Regardless, this volume is just really Musashi and Inshun waiting who would release the first strike.
I'm someone who grew up with western style comics so when I first time got into Manga, it being black and white was huge minus for me. At some point I became indifferent and as of recently (about the time I started to read Berserk which has some amazing illustrations) I started to actually like it. For something like Vagabond it might even be better esthetic choice
I mean look at this. Simple, beautiful and effective at setting the atmosphere for the scene that follows.
So, apparently, in feudal Japan staring contests are already a trend. Kidding! I love Musashi's character development here!! This volume is freaking awesome. AND HEAVEN AND EARTH IS FRICKEN LIT AF
One of the great aspects of this series is how the author shows things from the perspective of the people Musashi is fighting. Really makes one wonder, are the people enemies, or just opponents?
Master Hozoin's master was dope AF. I mean being all calm and in control like that gives me the goosebumps. His character's design and appearance were on point. that is exactly how I want to imagine a powerful sword master Great artwork by the way.
“I don't think I'll survive long enough to make a name for myself.”
“Otsu. I don't want to die.”
“I am who I am. I must follow my own path.”
“Everyone shunned me. But I was the one who turned my back on them. But actually… actually I enjoyed spending time with you. Otsu, you were the only one. May she have a happy life.”
“What's wrong with me?! I'm nothing. If I'm destined to die, then that's alright too.”
“Heaven and earth. As the four season between heaven and earth flow in an endless cycle. So too, must man work his way through his own cycle of seasons continuous.”
“What's this feeling? I feel too calm. I'm facing the most powerful opponent I've ever known. I'm in mortal danger. Should I be feeling like this? I feel so calm. And my vision is so clear, I can even see the details in the leaves behind Inshun.”
“Do you truly believe that the way of the sword is so trivial?”
“My sword is one with heaven and earth.” – Kami’Izumi Ise No Kami
Now, I know that you're meant to raise the tension with these single-stroke fights, but this is simply too much. More than half the volume, nothing happens at all.
In this volume, many spreads and splash pages appear. So far, spread and splash page is not many so this volume has a large meaning of Vagabond, I think. In the story, two sword masters Inei and Yagyu past that they learned their way of sword is one with heaven and earth by the mightiest swordsman appears.

This manga keeps getting better. (And now I am torn again between wanting to read more and pacing myself.)
Most of the time, the art in any comic book, whether Western or Asian, basically just *is* for me. That is, I obviously see it and notice it, and like it or dislike it, but that's it. Unless there's more, and it just really speaks for itself. The art in this manga is just so damn amazing, I am again and again just -dumbstruck by how amazing it is. There are times when I turn a page, and there's no word, but it still speaks so loudly.
Though there was no fighting and they both stood there it was a great intro to what I hope an amazing fight, to redeem himself in the next volume. The artwork is great. The backstory is awesome!
