Kit Sinclair (professor of history at the Albuquerque City College) is looking for the Lost City of Gold. She thinks she will find it at Desolation Canyon and she needs a guide to take her there. She asks Hawke Lonechief (tribal chief of police) but he is opposed to taking her there since he lost his wife when she fell to her death in the canyon a few years ago. Eventually Hawke agrees, but they end up facing dangers way beyond the canyon itself when they discover Kit has an obsessed stalker after her.
I thoroughly enjoyed this romantic suspense story. I loved the setting of the canyon. Kit and Hawke were a well-matched couple since both experienced the pain of losing a loved one. (Hawke lost his wife, and Kit’s fiancé was murdered right in front of her in the church on what was to be their wedding day.) I was curious to find out who the stalker was.
An entertaining read with lots of suspects, a great setting, and a likable main couple.

I didn't know the subseries name until it showed up when I typed in the title. I'm guessing they mean Amazon in the sense of warrior women (think Wonder Woman) rather than the river, though when I first saw "heart of the amazon" I was thinking the river and the jungle--maybe that came from the suspense in this book (which reminded me a bit of King Solomon's Mines or the Indiana Jones series though on a much smaller scale.)
I understand being career driven and even the "publish or perish" idea professors deal with, but there is such a thing as taking too much risk. A career is not worth your life, or the life of someone else. So for me, Kit's determination to get into the canyon no matter what was irksome. She won't take the word of people who know better than she that she's not physically ready to go into that canyon.
Though I feel bad that both Kit and Hawke had to deal with deaths prior to them meeting each other, it did provide a bonding point for them as well as giving them each something they had to overcome.
There were good options for who Kit's stalker was. The author did a good job of having several believable options--just when I'd think I had figured out who it was, there'd be something else that made me think, well, no, maybe it was one of the others.
I was sorry to read that a colleague was trying to steal Kit's work, presumably to shore up his own publishing so he didn't perish in the university setting.
This is a cute romance story. It’s a quick and easy read.
The part that bothered me was Hawke quickly getting over his wife’s death. For most of the story Hawke has not dealt with his wife’s death. Then all of a sudden in the span of 24 hours Hawke is saying he is at peace with her death and realizing he wants to be with Kit all at the same time. It just seemed a little rushed.
Kit having a stalker added to the suspense of the story. It gave Kit and Hawke a reason to continue interacting. Although, it would have been nice for Hawke to make some grand gesture to prove to Kit he loves her. The stalker was well written. I thought it was someone else entirely. The only thing I thought was a little weak was her reason for protecting Kit. He said she had saved his life but she just held him back from stepping in the street in front of a car. Anyone would’ve done that. She didn’t necessarily do anything extraordinary.

The tribal chief of police threatened to arrest Kit if she went into the canyon by her self. She tried to get him to take her but after losing his wife in the canyon, he is not willing to take another woman. Kit is a very determined woman and her tenure at college depends on her research. She doesn't realize she is in danger from a stalker but Chief Hawk is beginning to suspect she is. Can he keep her safe and let her fulfill her dream too?
Not a bad story. I was looking for something light and fluffy and this fit well. The cover didn't match the description of the characters which somewhat aggravates me (mildly OCD LOL) but I enjoyed the adventure.
This was awesome who done it story that kept you guessing till the very end. Kit Sinclair, a college professor thinks she may know where the Lost City of Gold, but needs a guide to take her to Desolation Canyon. Police chief Hawke Lonechief, having lost his wife four years ago from an accident in Desolation Canyon is not willing to take Kit and continues to tell her so even though everyone knows he is the best guide. Accidents keep happening around Kit and Hawke is unwilling to let her threats of going alone if she has to come to fruition. As their trek into the canyon begins, will they find the Lost City and secure her job? And will they find the source of the accidents before its too late?
This amzing book of love and risk taking is for those who don't have enough suspense in their lives. Kit leads a very full life, from the murder and betrayal of her fiance to her job to the feelings she has for the chief of police whom she has fallen for. Hard. Join Kit in this adventure of life while fighting to stay alive while her obsessive stalker is after her.

This was an easy read with twists and turns. I enjoy suspense and this story had plenty. If you like stories with a bit of suspense, romance and adventure, this story is one you will enjoy. The setting of the southwest and it's hidden mysteries was easy to picture.
