Sing Me to Sleep by Anna Argent is the 3rd book in her The Lost Shards series. Refresher: What is Riven and Vires? Riven is a secret group that protects those that carry magical shards, and the evil Vires, are the ones who will kill to inherit those shards for themselves. What are Shards? Shards are souls with magical powers that move on to siblings of the dying person; but if they are killed, the person who murdered them will inherit the powers of the victim. The shards can be dark or light, and the person who inherits them needs to balance the good and bad. Not so with the Vires, as they want the powers and will use them for evil purposes.
Stygian Attis, our hero, is a member of Riven and has learned over the years to control whatever evil shards he has. One night he is suddenly woken by someone in his house, and manages to capture the intruder.
Echo Charmaine, our heroine, has been on the run for many years, after the death of her mother and sisters. She is constantly running from an evil member of the Vires, who desperately wants to kill her to gain her shards. Echo also deals with those voices that tell her things to do, and it is that which brings her to Stygian’s place to leave a magical paper, which will turn out to be a prophecy. When she is captured by Stygian, she tries numerous times to escape, as she trusts no one. Stygian will take her to the Riven headquarters, where Eden will acknowledge that she is good, not a member of Vires. But Echo lives in fear, and despite the Riven people explaining that they will help keep her safe, her distrust forces her to want to run away; this despite the dynamic attraction between her and Stygian
In a short time, the prophecy is discovered to have a way to remove the evil shard in Stygian, and also in Echo. There is a way to trap the evil witch who is pushing them to do bad things. It will take Stygian and Echo to work together to find clues from before her mother was killed that will reveal what they need to retrieve to save themselves.
What follows is a tense, exciting, non-stop action thriller that had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Echo will be in for a shock when she is approached and threatened by someone in her past. The relationship between Stygian and Echo became very hot, and we rooted hard for them to find a way to stay together. Not only were Stygian and Echo a great couple, but I cannot wait to see what Argent has in store for us from the many wonderful secondary characters we have met along the way. I do not want to tell too much more, as it would be spoilers, and possibly ruin it for you.
Sing Me to Sleep was a wonderful addition to this fantastic series, and once again written so well by Anna Argent. Sing Me to Sleep had a bit of everything that kept you reading throughout; suspense, excitement, danger, intense action, and romance. I suggest you start with the first book in this series, in order to learn about the two factions, as well as about the shards; in order to understand everything.

REVIEW: 4.25 stars--SING ME TO SLEEP is the third instalment in Anna Argent’s contemporary, adult THE LOST SHARDS paranormal romance series focusing on a group of people imbued with magic powers. This is twenty-nine year old Stygian Attis, and Echo Charmaine’s story line. SING ME TO SLEEP can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information fro he previous story lines is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and history.
SOME BACKGROUND: The world as we know it is filled with magic, and throughout history people have been blessed or cursed with magical abilities. The ongoing war between good and evil pits the Riven against the Vires in their search for anyone with magical shards-slivers of magic passed down from parent to child, or in many cases, upon the death of someone with magic. By killing someone with magic, the perpetrator ‘inherits’ the shards of his/her victims; upon the death of a loved one, the shard is passed to the nearest kin.
Told from several third person perspectives including Stygian and Echo SING ME TO SLEEP follows Echo Charmaine as the ‘voice’ in her head sends her to the Riven compound, a compound where she must deliver the ‘prophecy’ to Stygian Attis. Trying to stay one step ahead of the creature she calls ‘rat-man’ Echo finds herself a virtual prisoner of the Riven and the man with whom she will fall in love. As Stygian wages war with the voices in his own head, the ‘slivers’ of evil begin to take control, control that places Echo and Stygian in a precarious position as they begin their journey to see the prophecy fulfilled. What ensues is the building relationship between Stygian and Echo, and the fall-out as the past threatens to destroy Stygian’s tenuous hold on his life and that of the woman he loves including the voices that are aware of how close our hero is to losing it all.
Echo Charmaine has the ability to control people with song but our heroine has lost everyone she loves when the ‘rat-man’ took everything and more. Now eight years later, trying to stay one step ahead of the evil that continues to threaten her life, Echo finds temporary solace with a man whose past is tied directly with her own.
Meanwhile Riven leader Garrick Andor, and Holt Bardrick find themselves on the hunt for their former Riven leader Starry Mandrake, a woman who has taken too many souls, and is no longer the woman they once trusted and loved.
Once again, there is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including the Riven leader Garrick Andor, IT expert Marvel Manning, empath and healer Eliana, historian and librarian Harold Lionel, fifteen year old Eden, a young woman with the ability to ‘read’ the shards, and her protector, fifty something Argo. The requisite evil has many faces as the Riven continue to battle the Vires, as the Vires hunt for those with the dangerous shards.
SING ME TO SLEEP is a captivating and unique look at the paranormal. The premise is engaging and fascinating; the characters are colorful but struggling; the romance is intoxicating but suffers with issues of trust and possible manipulation.
As always, I am captivated by the Lost Shards series and the world Anna Argent has created in her stories! Each book is unique from the other while continuing a story line that promises excitement at every turn. I feel like this world, where each person inherits shards from their family members when they die, gives the idea of "soulmate" a whole new meaning. These shards are the essence, or soul, of people who have died, and some are good while others are pure evil. How many good and evil shards you inherit determine if you are a good guy (Riven) or bad guy (Vires). The problem is that if you kill someone, you inherit their shards if they have no next of kin, so the good guys have to avoid killing the bad guys, for fear that they themselves will turn evil. As you can see, the world is a bit complicated, so I would recommend starting with the first book in the series if you haven't read it yet. Reading them in order is best.
Eight years ago, Stygian Attis killed a woman because she asked him to. Fearing that her daughters would be left without protection, she chose to die so they could inherit her shards and live. Now life has come full circle, and Stygian must protect a mysterious young woman who is being hunted by a Vires who desperately wants the shards she inherited from her mother. Echo knows it's safer to keep moving, but the place Stygian takes her to seems to be full of people who might know more about herself than even she does. She thinks she's going crazy, but in fact, she might be part of the key to helping them save a Riven who has turned evil. She hears things sing to her, pointing the way to something important, and there's a prophecy, one that could mean big changes for everyone very, very soon.
Of the three books in this series, I will say this one might have been the hardest to follow. It was a bit more complex than I am used to, and honestly, it's partially my fault for starting this book when I had a lot on my mind. Concentrating was not my forte. Nevertheless, I persevered and found this story to be really unique and fun to read. I loved the chemistry between Stygian and Echo - he had this innate need to protect her, which he initially chalked up to his shards talking, but he quickly realized there was something about her that called to him personally. Echo was a tough woman, having gone through so much loss and violence, and it was amazing to see her maintain such strength and determination to continue in spite of her fear. They worked really well together in solving things, and while there were many obstacles in their path as a couple, they were both understanding of each other. It was a good relationship to witness.
I am eager to see where this series goes next! I definitely think it's going to continue to get more complex and interesting. Anna Argent's alter ego, Shannon K. Butcher, has a series that has continued for many years and gets better and better every time. I expect the same with this series.
**I received a free copy from the author and this is my honest review.**
5 Star Sleep He was raised to suppress his feeling and desires by a cruel grandfather, but something stirs inside Stygian Attis when a beautiful thief sneaks into his room. On the run from the man who killed her entire family, but the voices in Echo Charmaine’s head demand that she drop off a tattered, magical bit of paper before she can move on to the next town. Drawn together by passion and the shards they share, Stygian and Echo’s fates are inextricably entwined but if they can’t find a way to rid themselves of the evil haunting them before the next new moon, neither will make it out alive.
‘Sing Me To Sleep’ is one emotional roller coaster of gripping emotions, electrical chemistry and pulse pounding suspense. The hero and heroine are strong, captivating characters that are a perfect fit and while their attraction burns hot and fast, Stygian and Echo’s relationship is one hellish ride of twisted, confused feelings because of the shards inside them. Lots of angst and other feelings flow the pages and readers experience right alongside the characters including tears and sparks.
The journey to find what the couple needs to fight for their happily ever after is one fast paced plot full of superior suspense that keeps readers turning the pages as fast as they can read them. Not only is the quest full of suspense and excitement but the evil is stalking their every step adding danger and stunning twists that amps the excitement up even more. While this story can be read as a standalone, in order to achieve maximum enjoyment, it should be read in sequence as the overall battle with evil is a thrilling ongoing one that readers can really sink their teeth into.
Stygian Attis had a tough start to life raised by a grandfather who hated him due to what happened when he was born. So he was made to control all feelings or desires he might have from an early age. However, that changes when a beautiful woman and thief sneaks into his room. He wants her, his shards want her too and they whisper of a power to change his life forever. Echo Charmaine is on the run from a man who murdered her whole family and is after her so he can get the powerful shards that are within her. Powerful voices in her head are insisting she drop off a magical piece of paper by Styfwn catches her in the act she has inadvertently stumbled into something far bigger that will tie her to him. Drawn together by passion as well as shared shards they need to find a way to rid themselves of the evil within them before the next new moon before they won't make it out alive.
This was a great story which was sensitively told. I felt that the characters came to life and that I could empathise with their thoughts and emotions. I was rooting for them to succeed and find a way to be happy together. There were ups and downs in their relationship and there were points when I was heartbroken for them. Very enjoyable and I can't wait to find out what Hael does next (as we all know she is going to find a way to come back).
2.25 -going to be honest i'm kind of hard to please so this one may deserve more then this rate for some , the series idea is good i did not read the first two books but i've read their blurb and i think i can say this can be read as a standalone. -like i said it was a an ok read for me but it did not get me scared , excited or anything about what is coming next , you know the thrill that you get when you are so into something or that stomach ache that makes you kind of scared but there is no way you're going to stop reading anytime soon. -both leads were good nothing that makes you want to hit them, we have a normal FL there is no bitchy , annoying behavior from her , also the ML was a good person who had his mind straight a fresh breath if you ask me ( both of them ).
The 3rd book in the Lost Shards series and has Stygian finding an intruder in his house when he captures her he takes her in to be tested. Having done as the voices asked and delivered the prophecy Echo wanted to leave, finding that she is a Riven and being told she is safe is not enough to make Echo trust Stygian and his friends. But it will take them working together remove the evil trying to harm them and along the way they find love. This is a good book and though it can be read as a standalone for the best experience should be read as part of the series. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book thrusts this world forward, but can also be read as a standalone. Echo and Stygian have immediate chemistry, even as they don't entirely trust what they feel. Their lives have been incredibly hard, but together they will fulfill a prophecy that can free them both. This story is one that I absolutely loved and this world is fantastic. Anna Argent has woven a web that keeps you entangled and constantly wanting more. The only thing that I think would make this story better would be getting a glimpse of the other couples from this series. I don't want to give anything away, but I definitely recommend this book and the entire series.
You never get to read about past couples, even in passing. It is like they fell off the face if the earth, even though they are part of the Riven. Doesn’t make sense not to even mention them. It takes away from the finished product. The Riven are supposed to be a group, but once a couple gets together they are never heard from again. I guess this is the last we will see of Stygian & Echo. Sad, really.
Wow I love this series!! What an incredible concept and the storyline gets more crazy and in depth as hard choices need to be made. A very different view of the world and what makes people tick. Very grateful to have been given an opportunity to read and review this book.
