Man of the Year

Rate this book
Advertising executive Samantha James is looking for a ballplayer who can turn the city's losing team into a winning package. From the moment she sees pitcher Jarrett Corliss in that steamy locker room, she knows she's found her star candidate.

She also knows she needs to steer clear of the arrogant player outside the boardroom.

Jarrett agrees to be Samantha's poster boy on one condition— that she goes out with him. Even though the team's owner has forbidden fraternization because of recent scandals that almost brought down the ball club, Jarrett isn't about to strike out.

He needs the team to win this season to save his career, but he also needs Sam…and this is the one time where he hopes his pitch lands a home run.

Their first date happens like this: Jarrett coerces her into dinner by threatening to fake an illness and bail on an important PR photo shoot. Besides making him seem like a five-year-old holding his breath until he gets ice-cream, Samantha's reaction totally drove me crazy.

What she should have said: "If you want me to take a chance on you and see you as a potential romantic partner, you can't behave in this completely selfish and immature way. This is *my job* you're messing with. Not to mention the fact that you have a large stake in your team becoming financially viable as well."

What she actually did: Caved, went home and put on a pretty dress for dinner.

I couldn't make myself continue reading.

Did Not Finish

Please, if one knows very little about baseball, do not write a novel involving so much of it. I have no idea if the romance worked because I had to stop reading because the baseball didn't. (ETA 2011: This came up in another forum, and if I'm being generous this could have been an AU in which the PCL survived as a 3rd major league: if it was, wow, maybe I should go back and read this.)

"The sky was overcast, but together they pushed the clouds apart and touched the starts." Or the characters have euphemistic sex, you be the judge.

I got this book for free some years ago. This week while waiting for a delivery, I had a few minutes to kill and only seconds to find a book. It made me remember all the reason I stopped reading Harlequin series romance.

Man of the Year reminds me of my first HQN romances in the 1970s: Asshole hero who won't take no for an answer. Simpering heroine who says no, but melts at those magic kisses. Oh, and no chemistry to speak of. The book was better than those oldies mainly for one reason - the heroine, at least, had some personality. Actually, she was well drawn and quite interesting. She runs her own business, had some interesting and unique ideas about advertising/marketing, had real relationships with her friends, and even her brother's troubles added depth to her character. The hero, was just shallow/alpha male/caveman. I see heroine. I want heroine. I get heroine. I was rooting against him. If he'd re-injured his rotator cuff or gotten hit by a car, I would have felt quite satisfied with his fate. Alas, it's not to be. Of course, he gets the interesting, spunky heroine in the end. Too bad he got the better end of the bargain.

This is a good book with a terrible cover. And it's a Baseball book! In a series romance! (Usually one does not get sports from Harlequin.)

Hero is a hot pitcher for the Seattle baseball team (not the Mariners). Heroine owns the PR/advertising company with the contract to bring the team back to popularity from scandal & loserdom. Hero has hots for heroine, who is likewise attracted, but boss/team owner wants NO scandal, no hanky-panky. She doesn't want to lose the contract w/the team, so she turns him down. (Also sees him as a "playah" like her brother's friends from high school & college. Brother is also on the pro team.) There's a lot of cute maneuvering and one-upmanship going on. Lots of fun and games and some great romance. This was a lot of fun. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

A little light on the story-line, but what does one expect from a Harlequin Romance book? Not a very indepth read, but could be a good Summer read, fast and to the point. Not very well developed characters, or intense plot, just short and sweet.
