What do you do when your past comes back to haunt you? Fight back...

Life at Redwood Supernatural University is about as predictable as you could imagine a supe college would be- mean girls, douchebags, drama, and a lot of studying, but things are looking up. The Bitch Crew has started to leave me alone, and Justin has been expelled. With that nasty mess out of my way, it looks like I can finally focus on figuring out what is going on with my guys and our budding relationships and getting a hold of my powers.

That is until the nightmares that plague my dreams come to find me in my new life.

At least this time when I face my tormentor, I won’t be alone. I’ll have the support of my friends, a powerful supernatural, and six guys who are determined to keep me safe from my past.

I got this...I hope.

Giant miss

" blowing out a harsh breath " I did not care for this book the second time around, there was way to much panicking, running to the Dean, blacking out, running to the dean, hyperventilating, running to the dean. I get this guy is horrid, I get the ptsd, what I don't get is why the entire book was just that? lucie freaking out at ever turn And her ex stalking! And I do mean entire book is like this? well with weird sex scenes as well that i really didn't feel. The ended is way confusing when she happens to mist, and the dean I think is like oh yeah she can do that, and I'm thinking " and you didn't think to tell her or train her in this" could have really helped many times? Another thing I hated is we don't really learn anything about her or her abilities, what she's learning to do and all, and this is none the more shocking when she bends a knife in one of the chapters, like way cool but like when did this happen! When did u learn that? The author definitely went the wrong route in writing this second book, spent way to much time on Noah and Lucie drama then on a real story. And the whole dean and everyone trying to protect her was weird, the agents at the end, again weird! I'm not really sure where this book is heading but I'm no longer interested.

Ok the premise of the series is about the last Djinn and having to go to the academy to learn about this new world. Instead we get battered abused woman who is a supe being stalked by her abuser and the other supes can’t do anything about it. It’s ridiculous.

She’s supposed to be powerful.
She’s supposed to have magic and be magical.
Her boyfriends, the school etc are to be magical.
They should be able to handle a stalker abusive ex boyfriend.
Instead it’s a lot of panicking and running to the dean, and panicking with the guys and running to the dean. I still dunno what’s up with the dean. I still don’t know what being a Djinn entails, and looking at other reviews once this book is over we still don’t know.

We don’t know anything! The entire plot of this book is about Noah and Lucie. Not about the school, the magic, or being a Djinn. This is NOT paranormal, this is a contemporary or new adult romance with a hint of paranormal.

This is not what the first books synopsis sold me on. The book isn’t exactly bad, the writing isn’t completely horrible or anything. This author definitely knows how to show and not tell and yet.....this is not the direction I expected to go. I’m bored of the constant Noah issue. I’m bored of not learning anything new about her powers.

She buries her tokens in the woods/forest in a completely obvious spot and they are supposed to be a big deal. But so far nothing has happened. No one has stolen them, yet they are in a place that they could be stolen from. We have yet to see what happens when she fulfills a wish, what happens to her when she doesn’t and it’s been a while since that first wish she granted at Hudson. I mean there’s so many plot holes and I don’t feel we need to go through the entire Noah plot line to get there.

She was adopted but we don’t know anything about her birth family. But Djinn are rare...might someone know who she is? I just have too many questions that are not being answered and looking through the negative reviews it appears they still don’t get answered. I just don’t feel like wasting my time.

Read other books from this author in the future: yes but not this series

I had a hard time getting trough this book. I actually had two days off and normally I am able to read a book of this lenght in one or one and a half days and I needed four!
This is the second Part of the Best wishes Series. 80% of the book could have shortened, because it is basically every day stuff, relationship stuff and a little bullying from the ex boyfriend. At 80% I thought according to a general book scheme things should pick up now and they did. Finally there is some action going on, something I surely expected.
So again this story would have worked without the supernatural stuff. We know she kann do some stuff being a Djinn but the stuff she does could have been done without superpowers, only one time in the book she needed her superpowers. So why bother with all the supernaturall stuff? Just to make the book more interesting?

I will def this series, but I will try the second part of her contemporary RH series.

NOPE

I tried. I really did. But this book was filled with unnecessary filler, leaving the plotline all over the place and left me gritting my teeth as I finished it. In essence, I don't think I'll be continuing this series, ever.

First off, the first book (and parts of this one) are *very* reminiscent of another series. It's eerie how similar they are. Secondly, this book (and the first) need some *serious* revision and just pure spelling/grammar checking. And lastly, how is this book about supernatural creatures but we're given very little context as to the magic and what they can do?? Because believe me, I have a hard time believing the MC couldn't be protected better with all these powers floating around. So, again, filled with fluff and very little substance.

This one is tense! Lucie has to deal with the ex-boyfriend who abused her and he takes some drastic actions against her. Thankfully Lucie has a lot of support from her guys, family and friends.

I'm interested to see why the Dean of the university is so involved with her life (I have a theory) as he is instrumental in dealing with the Noah situation.

Some pretty steamy scenes..... One in particular was 🔥🔥🔥

Smoke and Survival is AJ Macey's fifth book, and she keeps getting better with each one! Character chemistry is flowing, the drama is real, the s*xy times are...well...just prepare to fan yourself, and the writing becomes smoother each and every time I find myself falling into one of her books.

As I headed into book two, there were some big questions that I was personally wondering about:
1) Where the h*ck is #nutcasenoah?
2) What's going on with Lucie's powers?
3) Will Hudson ever get his wish fulfilled? Will he ever be forgiven for being such a d*ckhead?
4) Will we get some more fiery fun times with my favorites- Nik & Cam?
5) Will Lucie make honest men out of the gang and start a formal relationship with them?

Let me just say...ALL my questions were answered- unfortunately, even #1. Noah's presence looms large in Smoke & Survival, carrying on his role as our major antagonist, but based on some of the stuff that goes down in S&S, I'm wondering if there might be an even bigger baddie lurking behind him in the darkness. I think things are going to get a lot more complicated for Lucie and her guys, and the drama is going to get even more intense.

As far as question two goes, we get to see/hear about a bit more magic as Lucie continues to learn the basics of what she's capable of and even encounters a few surprises along the way. One thing that I liked is that we're slowly learning more about the guys' species too- there is some great information about shifters, and we also get to learn more about vampires. Something I always keep in mind when reading a series that's projected for seven installments (books/novellas) is that it's a marathon, not a sprint. I like that we learn a little more each time instead of getting some giant info-dump that I have trouble remembering after I get caught up in the next few pages.

One of the areas that I was most happy/impressed with was the way that the relationships are progressing with Lucie. Each of the guys has their own relationship with her as well as the communal bonds that they share (especially Cam and Nik), but none of those are neglected or given the backseat to the others. Each of the guys has their time to shine with Lucie, and there are lots of little moments peppered throughout Smoke & Survival that help to create a stronger chemistry, bond, and connection between them all.

Yes, ladies (and I guess the outlier gentleman reader)- we do get lots of s*xytimes. However, they're all nicely packaged with moments of real intimacy, and while I can totally get behind the occasional gratuitous s*x scene, I honestly didn't feel like any of them were just thrown in to tease readers. They're forming relationships, and the emotional and physical components are done in a wonderful way that deepens those character connections each time.

Overall, I think Macey did a great job and is bringing new strength to this story each time she sets out to write Lucie and her guys. I can only imagine what the next installment will be like, but if she keeps up at this rate, I know I'll be just as happy as I am with Smoke & Survival.

Wow, the author kicked it up a notch.

I was expecting much the same as the previous book in terms of characters and plot, but the final act just about had my heart racing.

Alex finally calls in the FSID team (go Mason😉, and which is how I came to this series), and things take a turn for the worse as Noah strikes at Lucie. Now there’s no chance that I won’t continue on with the final book. So good.

Massive trigger warning for abuse and physical violence and blood.

Eeeek!

This book was so much more than a RH paranormal academy story! And so good! Loved the relationship progression between Lucie and her guys. Still so many mysteries and unknowns, but think this is was bigger than just a abusive/controlling ex/stalker. Does t have to do with her great grandmother? What about the rabid interest from the dean? Six months til more questions are answered!!!!

Son of a ..... Bloody Noah! Asshole! Man, Lucie is one massively unlucky chick. Impressive how her character is crumbling under pressure, yet does not appear weak. The signs of excellent writing. A great second instalment. A tough read due to all the crap Noah does but oh so powerful. I’m still hoping the good guys will win. Looking forward to Book 3.

5% - Whhhhy is the dean so up this girl's ass. Does no one else think it is so fucking weird that he's so interested in Lucie? That he wants to hear about her flash backs. Another thing, the girl doesn't eat because of anxiety....it's not like she's dying. People with anxiety deal with loss of appetite constantly.

5% - ALSO, why would the dean get her a new phone number, why not just have her call her mom so her mom can do it? Another thing, it's just a text. The Earth hasn't stopped moving, the apocalypse hasn’t started, it's a text from her abusive ex. Literally nothing can be done about that and it really is absolutely no reason to have 7 people, SEVEN people, AND A BIRD, march to the dean's office.

19% - Yo…if this dude beat the shit out of her, WHY DOES SHE STILL HAVE PICTURES OF HIM ON HER PHONE???

25% - So, he's stalking her, which is terrifying, I understand this. There is something terrifying and equally frustrating when you know you're being watched by an ex, and you feel completely helpless and hopeless about it. BUT, the way the dean and 'her guys' are handling this is just fucking stupid. Her best friend calls her to tell her that the ex, Noah, showed up to her campus and tried to talk to her. So L runs to the deans office, and then the dean wants to know if Char can just pop on over to the school and talk to security? About what exactly? The dean and security already know what this douche looks like, has a picture of him, knows what he drives, knows he's been on campus multiple times to take pictures of L, watch her, and her even been in her dorm bedroom... Talking the to best friend will literally not help. Not to mention, they have known this girl like 4 months, but "she's everything to us." I just fucking can't.
Then Hudson pips up and says that the he thinks the dean seems a "little lax given the danger he currently presents." This is such an idiotic line. Harrassment/stalking is such a fine line and so fucking hard to prove. The dean literally can't do anything unless he catches Noah actually on campus watching or attempting to interact/harm L. BTW, I still don't completely trust the dean.

35% - Someone out of this whole thing needs to pull their head out of their ass and realize that Noah is getting help from someone close to L.
-----
I'm done until I finish this. Ugh.

Finally finished. 3 stars because the sex was hot af. Not sure if I’m going to read the 3rd book? Pretty sure Noah is a daemon and that the dean is her dad.

I love this series! The variety of powers that the different characters can have is interesting, and the background plot of the stalker/ex-boyfriend was suspenseful and kept my interest the whole time I was reading.

My only real question is

Her men are all so sweet, and I like there is just as much writing about how they get to know each other and spend time together as there is jumping into bed with each other. It allows the characters to really connect and grow, so the story was just that much better.

Eh

I’m just not sure how I’m feeling about this series. I don’t dislike it, but I don’t love it either. Again, I feel like her magic played a very small part in the storyline. I found myself skim reading half of the book just waiting for... more? This just isn’t what I expected. When I originally picked up the series I expected it to be about a girl finding out she’s a supernatural and going to a supernatural university to learn about her powers and of course falling in love with her harem. Yes the story takes place at the university, and yes we do deal some with their powers, but the books just aren’t what I was expecting at all. I finished the book for the sake of seeing where it would go, but it still doesn’t interest me enough for me to move on to the third book, unfortunately. Also, I am aware the blurb states that world building and magic building is a slow pace, but I didn’t expect it to be THAT slow.

I love the adolescence and Childs perspective that we got from the guys. Getting to see their perspectives on what happened in Smoke and Wishes was perfect. I hope we have more of that throughout the series. Getting to see how the dynamic of the group formed was seriously helpful. A little Landon and a little Logan was adorable LOL. Seeing how the guys reacted to Lucy and seeing what happened when Lucy wasn’t around it was funny. AJ Massey you rock! Can’t wait to read the next book!

This was a little meh and it took me a lot longer to read then it should have. I like the general storyline but this book had a lot of unnecessary everyday life stuff and a lot of panicking with little action. Some of the chapters felt disjointed and to blunt, the author certainly wanted you to know something but you do not really know why. I'll likely read the next book but this one was could probably use the help of an editor to get the story on track.

More ashes than smoke

First book hinted at a story while the second never delivered. A swooning, anxiety ridden heroine, supposedly able to captivate a harem of supernatural men, turned into a dull rinse and repeat of sexual encounters and torture scenes with a demented ex. Would have been better if she had grown a backbone, utilized her as yet slumbering talents and stopped with the agonizing comments regarding her size.

I hated and liked this book so I'll do a pro/con list and you can decide if you want to read it.

Pro's:
1. Smut scenes were pretty on point, nothing really to complain about.
2. The action (when it happened) was captivating and exciting.
3. Nik.

Con's:
1. Story was painfully slow to progress.
2. This story honestly didn't need to be supernatural. She finds out what she is pretty early in the first book and accidentally uses her power but for the rest of the book and nearly all of the second? She never uses it, intentionally anyways. With Noah being such a "threat", how is she not more worried on how to defend herself? It was irritating hearing her say she will never have that happen to her again blah blah blah but she never DID anything to actually help herself.
3. HOW IS A SUPERNATURAL SCHOOL SO INCOMPITENT TO STOP ONE FUCKING HUMAN? This story followed the same painful process: Noah attacks, she fucks one of the guys, then passes out then nothing but setting up the scene for it TO HAPPEN ALL OVER AGAIN. It was so FRUSTRATING that all of these pages i would read...nothing would have happened.
4. 6 guys was WAY TOO MANY. Hudson and Dante could've been the same person, honestly their character was mostly forgettable. Nik was my favorite so if the story was just 4 (Cam, Nik, and the twins) I think the story would've been better (and quicker).
5. The FMC was honestly weak. I love when a weak fmc has badass moments (especially with powers involved) but after the first two books, the build up to whatever might happen in the last 2 books just isn't worth it to me. Lucie kept going back and forth between being a victim to holding her head up to make a difference, it just was annoying. Pick one please.
6. Camden's nickname. OMFG. King? I hated it. Gave me the full-body ick whenever Nik or Lucie used it. And while on the subject of Cam...why would a vampire need glasses? It was probably to give him a nerdy, quirky vibe but it just felt wrong on a character who is a vampire.
7. Almost forgot. 2 books of the Dean being weirdly concerned about her is never addressed, just noticed. I'm just going to tell myself he's her dad because how in 2 books, is that not addressed at all?

NOW! Please take this with a grain of salt because this is my opinion and you could very well love this. It just wasn't for me and Noah's character annoyed me so much I don't much care how it ends.

This is probably the longest review I've given a book in a while but I felt like I needed to explain this story did so some things right and I only pushed through this second book because of Nik.

Lots of Trauma

I like that the author gives a clear explanation of things that can be triggering in this book, because this poor girl goes through so much, both in the book and in the past it can be traumatic to read about.

In the first book we learnt a little about the abuse Lucie went through with her ex-boyfriend, Noah. In this book we find out in explicit detail what she experienced and it’s not pretty reading. There are a lot of emotions flying about in this book, so if you want a fun read, this probably isn’t for you.

On that subject, I have to say I thought the amount of detail we were exposed to wasn’t necessary, because it was repeated time and time again in book. There was so many instances of him stalking her, her freaking out (understandably) and then everyone chasing their tails trying to find out where he was. It seemed to happen far too many times before outside forces were brought in to protect Lucie.

I’d also state that Lucie was exhausted because she was having nightmares every night, she was losing weight because she couldn’t eat because of stress and she was having flashbacks. What I want to know is why did no one get that poor girl counselling and medication, or even suggest it? She has 6 boyfriends, several close friends and the Dean of the university all worrying about her and no one suggests getting her support for her PTSD?? That, to me, is a huge flaw in this book!

Aside from the repetitive part of the book, I really liked the relationship the guys have with each other and with Lucie. The guys show real loyalty and support and, since the Bitch Crew have backed off somewhat, the 7 of them seem to be settling into a really nice relationship, even when exposed to difficult family members.

This book explores the magic side of things a bit more, and I would have loved to read more about that.

There are lots of hints being dropped in this book about Lucie’s history, but nothing very tangible. We are still in the dark about who her parents are.

Whilst I enjoyed the book, I felt like a lot happened, but not much progressed with the plot. I’m hoping that the next book will move things forward a bit more, because I am enjoying the series. The writing is smooth and easy to engage with and I like all the characters, I just want to know what happens to them next.

Smoke and Survival (Best Wishes Book 2) Kindle Edition
by A.J. Macey
I borrowed this book via the Kindle Unlimited program and voluntarily leaving this review.

I have to admit, I have been salivating for this book since I read Smoke and Wishes! I am pleased to announces that I was not disappointed.

Lucie is recovering from what happened in book 1 (I don't do spoilers) and her men are drawing closer. She is beginning to become part of her their lives, even meeting parents. Then the worst thing that could possibly happen, does. Her abusive and psychotic ex-boyfriend, Noah, has tracked her down and begins a campaign of harassment.

Ms. Mercy creates an amazing, emotional example of extreme PTSD in Lucie. From Lucie's night terrors to her inability to eat due to anxiety is heartrendingly family.

Ms. Mercy's depiction of Noah was absolutely terrifying. It reminded me of Gerald in Stephen King's Gerald's Game. He was so real, I truly expected him to be flesh and blood, even in his most sadistic and cruel moments.

The men are being fleshed out. We begin to see what made them the strong warriors and lovers that they are. And their love for Lucie shines through every page.

Bravo on the love scenes, each one is different! Not all authors can manage that. Some authors have a pattern of about the same five things. Not the six gorgeous creatures that seduce Lucie, comfort her and even romance her.

And yes, Nik and Cam are back, but this time they include Lucie for a Kindle scorching scenes.

Truly an awesome and compelling series. I am marking the days until the next book!

5 glorious stars out of 5

At the 75% mark, I started skimming or whenever Lucie got abducted by Noah. Like I said in my review of the first book, I know that there is a massive trigger warning for PTSD and abuse and I went into this knowing that. However, I wasn't expecting the entire story to surround it. I've never been in a situation like that, but it was a struggle to read about Lucie and her abuse. It didn't make sense to me that there is an entire supernatural university and no one has the ability to track Noah? There is nothing they can do other than put two guards on Lucie and the guys not leave her side? K. The amount of times that Lucie collapses or goes into a panic attack or shuts down is A LOT. I just wasn't expecting it. I don't particularly enjoy reading it. Furthermore, I feel like the romances were stunted until they caught Noah. Nothing grew and even though there were intimate scenes, I didn't feel like there was any growth. Landon and Logan and basically all the guys were angry that Noah was harassing Lucie, but they didn't do anything. The amount of times they were angry about the situation was getting to be too much. DO SOMETHING! ugh. There was no mention of Lucie being a Djinn until the end when Noah is asking. I know she thought she was human, but I feel like she should have used her powers more.

Overall, not continuing. I'm not going to torture myself.

Gave up at 38%.

It just didn't make sense.

One mature adult supernatural with immense power and abilities, a campus full of supernatural teachers with a variety of power and abilities, a campus security staff of supernaturals with a variety of power and abilities, six young 'in-love' adult male supernaturals with a variety of power and abilities and one young adult female supernatural who is suppose to be powerful and have unique abilities and they are not able to use magic to find and contain one young adult male?!! Or, at least, employ magic to protect the target while she is on campus?!!

They know who he is, what he looks like, what he is driving, where he lives (so they could also source dna for a locator spell or set up a ward to keep him off campus), where his parents live, have at least one location he has been in (her room so they could do a tracking spell), have objects he has handled (so they could try psychometry to see where he has been spending his time), calls that come in incessantly from him (that could be traced magically) but they do nothing except have the young males and a couple of security guards hang around her in hopes of preventing a physical attack?!!

It was just plain stupid.
