Kinsley Scott is a lesbian romance author who doesn’t actually believe in love. While her alter ego, Laurel Lake, loves happy endings and epic love stories, Kinsley has a more cynical view of the world. Grace Harper is a hopeless romantic hanging on every word of the lesbian romance novels she reads. She believes her happy ending is right around the corner if she can just move on from the ex who cheated on her. When Grace's childhood best friend, Leah, suggests that she comes to Philly to get space from her ex, it seems like the perfect opportunity to start over, especially since Leah's roommate is none other than Laurel Lake - Grace's favorite romance author. Grace quickly learns that people aren't always how they appear online and is disappointed to find that Kinsley Scott is nothing like Laurel Lake. She's rude and vulgar and, unfortunately, irresistibly sexy. There is also much more to her than meets the eye, and as the two grow closer, her tough exterior is quickly stripped away, revealing much more than Grace ever bargained for. 67,000 words
Erica Lee finished writing her first book, Dear Santa: I’m Gay, in December 2016. Erica currently lives in Pennsylvania with her wife, dog, chinchilla, and bunny. She spends her days working as an optometrist and her nights snuggled up on the couch with her furry family, binging on netflix or youtube.
Librarian note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
This started cliché but also it was fun, and somewhere half way I just wanted it to end. The writing is simple and it wouldn’t hurt for it to be more showing.
I listened to the audio version of this book narrated by Jessica Renfro. I always feel like I should preface these reviews with the fact that I am not a fan of audiobooks. I only listen to them because I have an hour commute to and from work.
I think Renfro has a talent for voicing different characters. The two MCs sounded like completely different people. But I didn't really care for Kinsley's snotty inflections that made her sound obnoxious and unappealing. She sounded like a butch valley girl if that is even possible? At one point she was described as having a skirt on and it completely floored me.
This is a story about Grace, a woman who has recently been cheated on, who decides to spend the summer in Philadelphia with her childhood best friend. The friend's roommate, Kinsley, is a lesbian romance author that writes under a pen name. She just happens to be one of Grace's favorite authors. The problem is that Kinsley is nothing like her fake author persona. Kinsley doesn't believe in love.
The two hang out and do things to try to get Grace to move on from her ex. But their attraction becomes an issue that they can't ignore. Then things get messy.
I was honestly so put off by Kinsley. She was not a very likable character. But I really liked Grace! And I wanted a happy ending for her. That made me invested in this. This had a fairly large amount of angst. It was majorly based on lack of communication. The last few chapters made my heart ache.
Overall this was an OK read. Really decent for Kindle Unlimited.
And I have to call out that it had a really funny line that I can't get out of my head:
Grace's mom: Do you remember what you said to me when you came out? Grace: Don't blame the liberal media?
So funny.
I recommend to people who like to read about romance, opposites attract, friends with benefits, fighting feelings, and fast food.
" Turns out, If we're not bumping vaginas, we're butting heads"
🤣🤣🤣🙈
I've really enjoyed this book. Great story, fantastic characters. Everything worked. Left me laughing, left me smiling. Even said ' awww' at one point.
This is the first book I've read by this author and I'm honestly impressed. Every time I would question a character's motive or their behavior there would soon be a short explanation or a bit of insight as to why they acted that way. I was racing through this book because I couldn't put it down.
The animosity between Grace and Kinsley was a lot of fun to read and the fragments of humor kept everything fairly lighthearted despite the subject of cheating being a major part of the plot. Really this was on its way of getting at least a 4* rating. Then disaster struck!
Aside from Kinsley's immature behavior which was really becoming repetitive, it's the last part of the book that just doesn't seem to fit the rest of the narrative.
If you're looking for a short read and love angst with lots of F2B sex scenes then this may be the book for you! Oh and uhm... get ready to learn some interesting and disturbing facts about male chinchillas.
Overall rating is a 3,5* (I flipped a coin which is why it's rated as 4*)
4.5 stars for this absolutely delightful little KU gem!
Kinsley is a lesbian romance author who doesn’t believe in love, commitment, or happy endings. Grace is a romantic through and through but had her heart broken when her girlfriend cheated on her and left.
Grace stays with childhood bestie Leah who is Kinsley’s straight roommate.
Grace and Kinsley don’t get along at all. Told in alternating chapters from their POV we get to see all the annoyance with each other. And frankly they both are pretty annoying in their own way. As time passes Kinsley becomes less obnoxious and cynical and Grace turns from a wet lettuce into someone with a backbone. You can see the attraction and feel it grow. There is a lot of push and pull. We all know they are in love. They don’t. It’s utterly fun! The classic 80% angst-bomb drops. It’s not overly surprising. But I turned the pages quickly to see how they would get out of it.
I started out not liking either MC, but adored them by the end. They became the best versions of themselves through each other. What more can you ask for?
I didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. I mean, it looked fun and sweet, and it’s all that, but I was also caught by surprise at how well-written it is.
Kinsley Scott doesn’t believe in love, which doesn’t stop her from being a successful romance author under the name Laurel Lake. Grace Harper is a fan, and also happens to be Kinsley’s roommate Leah’s childhood best friend. When her cheating girlfriend breaks her heart, Grace, needing a change of scenery, accepts Leah’s invitation to spend a few days (or more) at her place in Philadelphia. She soon finds out her idol isn’t all she seems to be on social media and in her writing. Kinsley and Grace are polar opposite. So of course they fall in love, without realizing it.
There are a few irritating moments, so much miscommunication I wanted to shake Grace and Kinsley (mostly Kinsley) at times. But there are a lot more very funny and / or very sexy scenes. Some are absolutely delightful, with memorable lines…
I liked this book. It was quite funny. A negative point for me was the immaturity of Kinsley, one of the main characters. It sometimes irritated me and spoiled the romance a little bit. I can’t understand why a grown woman can be so oblivious to her own feelings and fail to communicate honestly about them. Her past difficulties are an insufficient explanation or excuse. Still the book was well written, with nice main and supporting characters. My rating for this book is 3.7 ⭐️ which rounds up to 4.
Enjoyed this book - good back characters but inevitable and everything done by the "Lesbian rules of a good romance book," down to the "everyone sees it but the Main characters" plot, but, hey, four stars, it still works for me, so no complaints.
Many moons ago, I read Plus One by Ms.Lee. I was a baby lesfic then but I have been reading romance since forever and although the romance formula between heteros and lesbians are different, the results are similar. Be in love to death do us part or fell out of love, followed by cheating instead of divorcing him/her since the cheater has yet to grow a clit/pair of balls.
Sunsets and Shades started well, engaging characters - the leads and secondary characters, relatable storyline and well written hate - like - hate - love - stupidity - trope. The leads, I'm sorry but I forgot their names, the opposite attractions left them both shaking from resistance, and tried as they might to stop it from consuming, they failed.
Some of the drama was over the top and excessive, MsLee's signature. I felt like both leads weren't learning from their mistakes and was disappointed at one of the lead's attitude in the last part of the book. Adding tonnes of conflict into the story had me thinking, why can’t love ever be simple? Why must it be corrupted by outside forces that only served to tear them apart? Why, why, why, why?
There was absolutely no doubt that these two were IT, well before either one of them willing to admit it. They were comfortable and insanely attracted to each other from day 1. They quickly became one of the CRAZIEST couples ever. They were both ridiculously jealous, possessive and fearful of each others' feelings and their own. They fought, said crappy ass shit to each other and both had a shit start in life to overcome. Through it all though, you will never doubt that these two were so very much in love and even though they may be bad for each other at times, you can't help but to hope they will still be able to walk to the altar.
I liked it. There where a couple of things that I found exasperating enough that I was going to rate it a 3 but ultimately changed my mind.
I really don’t like when characters are super verbally abusive just for the sake of being aloof or bad ass, and whilst Kinsley is not THAT extreme and also “has a reason”, it’s a really feble one (in my opinion) and the attitude got old quite fast. Also, Grace being a punching bag over and over again, got in to my nerves pretty quickly.
That said, the way Kinsley admitted to Grace how she made her feel, and the trip, etc? It was really fast, weird, clingy and I was all for it. Vulnerability is hot 🤷🏻♀️.
The “lets be together for real” scene, and the things leading to it, right before the prologue? That redeemed whatever fault I found in the book. Grace getting her nerve and being decisive pushed it to a 4.
Despite the differences and difficulties, love is always capable of finding a way to take root and bloom. Grace stirs emotions Kinsley believed were gone forever. Their relationship grows in an awkward but sweet way. I really liked Kinsley. She is sometimes a bitch but she is also fun to be with. I loved the dual personalities, the funny dialogues with Lenny, the quirks and the issues. The characters are outstanding and the story is very well written. All in all, a humorous and endearing romance. I'm excited to see what this author does next. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
Oh, did I ever love Kinsley and Grace! Kinsley SUCH a jerk and yet I was charmed by her even from the beginning. It was incredibly satisfying to watch her calm down and start to gentle as she grows to care for Grace. On the flip side, I equally adored seeing how Grace grows a backbone thanks to her time with Kinsley, even if Kinsley annoys the hell out of her. They make such a fab couple and I adored their happily ever after.
Grace Harper needs to regroup during her summer teaching break as her life is still in disarray after she found her girlfriend of four years cheating on her months ago. She reconnects with childhood friend Leah and asks if she can go visit her in Philadelphia. Leah’s roommate is no other than lesbian romance author Laurel Lake, except in real life, she is Kinsley Scott. Laurel is a hopeless romantic like her fan Grace, but Kinsley is sarcastic and does not believe in love. As Leah spends time with her boyfriend, she leaves Grace and Kinsley to fend for themselves. Opposites at many things, the arguments are constant. However, there is an undeniable attraction that just makes Kinsley push Grace away out of sheer fear. Can she conquer her doubts and offer Grace a happily very after?
The story is narrated using first person point of view, alternating between Grace and Kinsley. I think this is why I enjoyed it as much as I did. One gets to know both characters, and although Kingsley’s can be difficult, we get to see that she really cares. Thank goodness for that because I wanted to slap some sense into her more than once. Her actions were a little frustrating at times. Grace on the other hand, was more likable from the get go. I did like that the story takes place over the entire summer break and there is a progression to the relationship that sometimes is lacking in these books.
The secondary characters were likable and added depth to the story. And! Yes, a cute chinchilla pet was part of the story. There is some revisiting of hometowns and specially on Kinsley’s part, a small story about making amends. The mothers were insightful and helpful when it came down to it-who knew that was possible?
I have to quickly mention that I absolutely loved this cover. However, it really didn’t have anything to do with the book. Bummer.
Overall an entertaining romance for first person POV lovers out there. 3.5 stars
This is the first time in MONTHS that I've gotten very, very close to giving a book 5 stars. I enjoyed this soo much and if it weren't for the fact I had a bit of a hard time getting passed the first 15%, I would definitely give it 5 stars.
This love story is so freaking cute and I felt so in love with Kinsley and Grace's love story and their every interaction. They had great chemistry together and the author does a great job building their slow burn so that when the angst came, I felt it and I cared enough that I couldn't put it down and I needed them to be together.
Kinsley is a romance writer (under a pen name) and is quite popular for her f/f love stories. But even though she may write the most romantic love stories, she's actually cynical af, hates love and her bedroom pretty much has a revolving door of one-night stands. Grace is a huge romantic who is actually a huge fan of Kinsley's books and believes sex is something that is special. So naturally when the two meet, they clash. They are so opposite I was honestly skeptical that the author would get me to believe they could be good together but she did it. Once they get passed the surface level judgement and hate, they had such a beautiful connection together. I love the way that Kinsley helped Grace move on from her shitty ex and remind her that she is worth so much more and is beautiful. And I love how Grace got Kinsley to open up, for perhaps the first time in her life, and be vulnerable in a way she's never been. They were exactly what the other needed and it was 💖💖beautiful 💖💖
I would definitely recommend this book to readers and it will definitely go down as one of my favorite f/f books I've read this year.
I really enjoyed story book! Both Grace and Kinsley were funny and endearing ( in an asshole kind of way). The dialogue was fresh, the story kept me intrigued and I will definitely be looking for more of this authors books!
As an enemies-to-lovers romance, this had all the basic elements for a fun story. Too bad I simply can't ignore the questionable decisions and actions of the characters 🤷🏻♀️
Despite Kinsley's past where it was explained that she was hurt, to me, what happened to her still doesn't justify why she acts like a jerk. The reasoning behind her behavior just seemed weak, IMO. Her self-deprecation screams irrational. Even her decision to dismiss her family. You can't just come out to them, not hear what they have to say about it, and then assume they won't accept you for who you are. It's like painting someone black when no one is. Don't even get me started with how she pushed Grace into going back with Becky. Unbelievable.
And then there's Grace. Regardless of her fling and unsure future with Kinsley, why, oh why would she still consider going back to her cheating ex?? It just doesn't make any sense. The cheating wasn't just a one-time thing to say the least. It went on for 6 months before she caught Becky, and the woman wasn't even apologetic about it. Now tell me, is that really the kind of person you would consider going back to? 🤦🏻♀️ Ok, maybe I'm being a bit harsh. Becky was Grace's first love after all. The one Grace thought she would spend the rest of her life with. But here's the deal. Nowhere in the book was Becky and Grace's narrative told in a way that lets us readers understand the good in the history of their relationship, and that's where the problem is. Their history appeared inconsequential in contrast to Becky's offense.
Overall, the story did have potential but ultimately didn't deliver.
2.5 stars, interesting premise but the story comes up short. The two main characters Kinsley & Grace, have this love hate attraction going on. They're mostly opposites who do fall for each other after much prodding by their mutual bestie. I wanted to connect to this story, cause I kinda relate to kinsley being a somewhat sarcastic asshole. I found this to be somewhat lackluster and underwhelming & the characters a bit whiny. Also, some situations strain the boundaries of credulity. I have a hard time believing one of the main characters would entertain going back to an ex who cheated on her for 6 months. She literally walked in on her being serviced by the new gal. Yet, she's now going to try to give it a go with her again? Free on KU, others seem to enjoy this per their reviews,I happen to be in the minority.

I loved this story! I loved Kinsley too; I can see a few reviews that didn't really like her, but I think I have a similar sense of humour and affinity for sex, lol. Underneath the tough exterior, she was super sweet but also true to herself. And I really want to meet Lenny, haha. I've never actually touched a chinchilla before so I need to determine if it really is as soft as I'm told, lol! The epilogue was amazing, and made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Love how their mums became besties too! A really enjoyable read, thank you.
For more than half the book, Kinsley is just plain rude and nasty to a perfectly pleasant Grace who is even trying to be nice to Kinsley. We are getting concerned with the number of romances and romcoms in lesfic that are normalizing nastiness and creating a myth that libido is enough reason for a relationship.
I thought this was written really well. So much so that I was super invested in our two MCs. While I felt for Grace, Kinsley drove me batty at times On a sidenote - I was devastated when my local library closed due to covid19, but it's led to me reading a lot of different authors thanks to Kindle Unlimited. Highly recommend if you like your romance filled with angst.
3.5 stars! The first half of this was really fun and I loved the bickering and banter between Kinsley and Grace! Their relationship developed into something really sweet. What bothered me was how easily Grace went back to her ex and entertained the idea of them actually getting back together?? After she had cheated on her for like 6 months and then basically kicked her out of their place and ran her out of town? And Kinsley was encouraging her to do it, after all her talk on all the ways Grace should be moving on. It just didn't make sense to me, like even if Kinsley didn't want to admit her feelings, just because Grace is a hopeless romantic that doesn't mean she has to be with someone, let alone be with the girl who cheated on her and broke her heart.
Other than that part of the book, this was still really enjoyable and I loved these girls together!
I'm sorry if I offend the people who liked this book, but while it was reasonably well written it didn't possess any other redeeming qualities.
Kinsey is an immature git with the behaviour of a prepubescent boy who just discovered sex jokes, apparently doesn't understand the concept of unwanted sexual advances and if she were a guy she would be the dictionary definition of a sleazy douchebag.
Grace is painfully naive, boring, constantly tells everyone how nerdy she is, completely lacks a backbone and generally can be best described as a doormat in human form.
Don't even let me start on Becky, the ex...
So yeah, I hated it. I find it much more toxic and problematic than romantic.
This is a new author to me and I must say I it was a great read.It has a great cast of characters the way they interact and the friendly banter is wonderful even the fur baby chinchilla is brilliant well worth a read
I loved her other book “anyone but her” but this one just rubbed me the wrong way from the get go. Arrogant and rude Kinsley. Meek and boring Grace. I couldn’t get into this. Had to stop around 1/3 into it.
