I do love Winnie the Witch and her quirky cat Wilbur and their adventures are real fun so when they decide to get involved with dinosaurs the action is fast and furious.

The pair love going to museums and Winnie particularly likes the dinosaur room. She tells Wilbur, 'I'd love to see a real dinosaur one day.' Wilbur kept his thoughts to himself but they were (just for us readers, of course), 'I'm glad I'll never see a real dinosaur.' Little did Wilbur know what was ahead of him.

Later, one day when the duo were flying home from the library on their broomstick, they see a dinosaur skeleton on display in the museum courtyard so they go down to investigate. They discover that a competition is being run to draw a picture of, or to make a model of, a dinosaur so as to show what the skeleton looked like when it was a dinosaur.

Winnie finds it too difficult to do anything so she has a brilliant idea … Abracadabra! and suddenly she and Wilbur are back at the time of the dinosaurs. From then on it is absolute chaos until a triceratops is discovered, which Winnie decides is a match to the skeleton in the museum courtyard.

Finding drawing a dinosaur much easier from real life Winnie produces a magical drawing (Dali would have been proud of it!) and off the three of them go to the museum. Professor Perkins was getting ready to present the prize as they land but he has to change his mind and can you guess who won? I will give you a clue, it wasn't Winnie.

There is no doubt that the Winnie the Witch series really is pure magic!

Winnie and Wilbur travel back in time to the age of the dinosaurs in this thirteenth picture-book adventure from Australian author Valerie Thomas and British illustrator Korky Paul. When the local museum holds a special competition for the best picture or model of a dinosaur, Winnie is determined to win the prize. But her inability to imagine how a triceratops would look, in the flesh, leads her to cast another of her spells. With a live model to work from, Winnie manages to create a drawing that almost looks like a triceratops, but it is her actions in bringing the triceratops back with her into the future, that really decides the competition...

As with the other entries in this quirky witchy series, I enjoyed Winnie's Dinosaur Day immensely, appreciating the humorous tale of magical hi-jinks, and the detailed artwork. I particularly enjoyed some of Wilbur's reactions this time around, as he looks on aghast while Winnie casts her spell, and hides his eyes rather than look at the dinosaurs around him. Like its predecessors, the endpaper artwork here is supplied by young child fans of the series, in this case from South Korea, which adds to the sense of child-friendly fun. All in all, another entertaining addition to the Winnie the Witch series, one that will appeal to fans of these characters, to children who enjoy witchy tales, and to young readers with an interest in dinosaur stories. The ending, in particular, will appeal to those children who have dreamed of having a dinosaur of their own...

Who doesn't like dinosaurs and who doesn't wish they could see a read dinosaur?!?! Winnie and Wilbur visit a museum and magically explore the different types of dinosaurs. It is kind of weird that a dinosaur has a belly button considering that they are ovoviviporous. Dinos are not mammals, they are reptilian and are thus hatched from eggs, not born connected to their mother. Fun adventure as always and very silly illustrations.

Great picture book where Winnie and Wilbur travel back in time to see the dinosaurs. This would be a good book to read before starting a topic on dinosaurs. Children would probably also find this book funny and enjoyable to read as a read aloud book. This would be best for children in KS1 but could also be used in Year 3.

Apparently Winnie the Witch is actually older than me. I had no idea. I read a grand total of one Winnie book when I was a child and that when I was already too old for picture books and was just killing time. So although I quite liked it I have no particular fond memories of Winnie as a childhood favourite - I was more of a Meg and Mog kinda girl. Since I was volunteering for a Winnie's Dinosaur Day themed half-term event at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History (including a guest appearance from the illustrator) though, I thought I'd better check the book out.

Winnie the witch enters a 'draw the best triceratops' competition at her local museum and decides to travel back in time to see what they really looked like. A nice fun picture book for younger readers (and perhaps their parents) to read. The pictures are great and the story is suitably silly. Not sure how it measures up to the million other Winnie the Witch books in the series, but I thought it was good. Wouldn't mind a miniture triceratops as a pet either (though my dog might!).

Being the geek that I am one of my favourite things about it was that the local museum depicted in the illustrations is the Oxford University Museum of Natural History. Hence the themed half-term events - where we made triceratops masks, Winnie and Wilbur hats, cetiosaurus stick puppet and held out own 'draw your own dinosaur competition'. Unfortunately my slightly punky sauropod failed to make any impression on the judges in the 9+ age category :(

Winnie uwielbia wizyty w muzeum. Podczas jednej z takich wypraw zauważa ogłoszenie o konkursie plastycznym na najlepszą podobiznę dinozaura. W celu skonfrontowania wyobrażeń z rzeczywistością przenosi się z kotem do ery dinozaurów.

The pirate should have won the drawing competition. That's a hill I am prepared to die on.
