Never Ever Love #2

Never Have I Ever Faked a Boyfriend

Rate this book
Their relationship was supposed to be pretend…

Eric Emerson’s last year at Cedar Oaks High couldn’t be better — he’s one of the most popular guys in the senior class, is holding solid A's across the board, and has a gorgeous girlfriend. It couldn’t be better, that is, until his girlfriend breaks up with him for a college guy.

Bri Songs loves living under the radar: she’s not exactly popular, would rather teach yoga than attend the usual teenage functions, and is perfectly content with being a senior who’s never had a real kiss. She tells herself that, at least. But with her sister’s wedding right around the corner, Bri's mom is incessantly nagging her to bring a date.

After a chance encounter after school, Eric and Bri come up with a plan to make both their lives better — Eric will escort Bri to her sister’s wedding, and Bri will help Eric win back his ex. All they have to do is pretend to date. Win-win, right?

But as their plan begins to work, the line between fiction and reality gets blurred.

What happens when fake feelings suddenly turn real?

Book 2 in the best-selling Never Ever Love series. All books in this series are short, sweet, swoon-worthy, and can be read in any order!

Sweet high school quick read!

There was nothing original about this fake dating story but it was a clean and quick little YA story about two high school seniors who decide to fake date foe specific reasons. Eric, the popular boy who gets dumped by he on-again off-again girlfriend wants to make her jealous and get her back. Bri is a studious girl and Yoga instructor who has to attend her sisters wedding and wants to get her Mother and Friend off her back about bringing a date.

They agree to fake date, but find they have a lot in common and really like each other. Eric notices how Bri is naturally beautiful while his ex girlfriend would cake on her makeup, how Bri’s voice is soft and gentle while his ex’s was high and annoying at times. How Bri is polite to his mother while his Ex was snapping at her. Bri, likes how Eric compliments her and how she feels when she is with him.

Oh my, I can’t believe I just read two books from the same author, of the same series in just a few hours! And I just brought the third book!
Yep I’m obsessed with this series!

Just as good as the first book!
We meet shy Bri Songs, a pretty girl who loves yoga and coffee dates with her best friend, Savannah.
Bri has a wedding to go to but doesn’t have a date to go with. And her sister and mother have been nagging her to get a date for the wedding.
Savannah is determined to help her get a date but that’s when they are in approached by two very cute looking guys.

Eric Emerson has just broken up with his girlfriend, he is still raw and hurt that she left him for a college guy. Sam, his best friend, is determined to find him a distraction to help him forget about her. And that is when Sam sees two beautiful girls and asks Eric to speak to the cute brunette girl.

But when Eric and Bri speak, there seems to be a new interest but instead they decide to keep their best friend’s happy by pretending to date where Eric will be Bri’s date for the wedding and Bri will help Eric by making his ex girlfriend jealous and win her back.

But during their fake relationship, feelings and touches are making it hard to know if what is happening is fake or not. Will they both try to make things real or will they go back to the ways things were?

I’m a huge sucker for fake-turning-real relationships, so this was a definitely win for me! Was a really good and quick read, absolutely loved the characters, the writing and the humour.
Definitely worth picking up this series!

So, the second story in the series is about Bri and Eric. They also go to Cedar Oak, and the only relation with the first book in the series is, that Penny is mentioned in the first chapter. What I'm trying to get at, here, is that the books can be read in any order.

I love the fake-dating trope, and this one was short and sweet. I just felt that the story didn't give us more of their chemsitry before they both knew that they don't want to fake it. There wasn't enough build-up before they make it real.

I think about 53% mark, they both confessed that they look beyond their fake relationship. But then. if you're restricted by length, this is inevitable. If this confession was pushed a little farther, I would have enjoyed it a lot more.

If I overlook this tiny setback, I like the story.

Unreal

I know and understand that a lot of teen romance is unreal and just like the movies. But this book takes the cake. Everything is too unbelievably unrealistic. Its too sweet but too farfetch to swallow. Everything happens too easily for the main characters. Like how Eric just picks her out like that to date...I couldn't finish the book.

This had the potential to be really great with this trope but it just felt so unbelievable with the outcome because it was so short. The lack of details or things happening behind the scenes really affected the story

I read a lot of cliche but this was too much. I read 70% of it and then I couldn’t continue.
Everything just happens so quickly. You have no time to fall in love with the characters. In books I really love when the author manages to make the reader feel the same things that the protagonist feels. Especially the feelings for the love interest. But in this case I felt nothing. I think the problem was that it felt more like someone was rushing through the story, wanting to get through it quickly. I guess as if a friend of mine was telling me how she met a guy...that kind of story telling.

This is a really long review for a book I spent so little time on but I just don’t want people to waste their money. This book isn’t just a cliche story. It’s a summary of a cliche story.

I have read many many books that have the same story line and I was always happy with then even though, of course, you always know how they end. Just saying this so that it’s clear that I don’t have a problem with the cliche itself.

Obviously you’re entitled to your own opinion so go ahead and read the book of you want.

Here’s a summary of the book if you’re kind of interested in the story but don’t want to buy it.
After you read this you don’t need to read the book anymore so WARNING SPOILERS

Summary of the book SPOILER: Bri loves to do Yoga but is single. Obviously that’s a huge problem for the mom and the best friend. She needs a date for her sisters wedding. Bri and BFF are sitting in a cafe when Eric and his BFF walk in. Eric’s girlfriend and mean girl just dumped him and Eric is sad. His BFF says he needs a rebound. They find the two girls sitting there and talk to them. BFF and BFF move away to let them talk in private. They decide to start a fake relationship. They spend hours on the phone, then Eric picks her up in the morning and everything just feels so real and Eric realizes he should be with a girl like Bri. Mean girl immediately gets jealous when they walk into school hand in hand. Then it turns into a routine. They both want it to be real. After about a week(I think) they confess their feelings for each other, go to a party the mean girl is throwing. And then of course the mean girl kisses Eric, Bri sees and runs away and won’t hear him out or answer his massages saying “please hear me out, it isn’t what it seems”.
And this is where I stopped. I’d literally reached this part within an hour. That’s how easy it was to just read through it. I really wanted to give it a chance.

I found out that it’s a novella and not a normal book which makes more sense as to why it’s so short. So the author just didn’t want to spend time on making the story more intense and emotional? Because the way you felt reading the summary is the way I felt when reading the book.

Look, I love cliché, somewhat trashy YA romances, they are my guilty pleasure. And I don’t expect the writing to genius, but I do have standards. And this just really didn’t meet any of them.

If you’re going to use the fake dating trope, you need to include the things that make it so great! The uncertainty, the pining, the slow burn. There also has to be stakes. Even if the reason for fake dating seems completely ridiculous, it has to matter to the two main characters. With Bri and Eric, they both instantly liked each other so there wasn’t really any need for them to even fake date.

The pacing was way too fast also. They caught feelings way too fast and the story rushed straight past important events, like the wedding that was one of their main reasons for fake dating. That should have been a major event for whatever reason.

And Eric’s reason for the arrangement was to get his ex-girlfriend (who is the typical misogynistic vain slutty mean girl) back, but he starts to hate her almost immediately. There should be some conflict there to make things realistic and entertaining!

The whole thing felt like a lazy compilation of tropes (fake dating to boy’s evil ex girlfriend kissed him and his girlfriend sees and misunderstands to romantic gesture at the school dance to side best friends even ending up together) but without understanding what makes any of them so enjoyable. Just because it’s a cliché teen rom com, doesn’t mean there aren’t standards for the quality.

Good

****Just a few spoilers*****

I liked this book it was cute and short; I was glad that Eric picked Bri over Aryanna I don’t get why most popular guys choose the most horrible popular girls to date... when they could get any non-popular girl to date who’s ten times better than the one they had.

I had to laugh when Aryanna wanted Eric back; when she disses him for a college guy. She didn’t want him when he was stressed over her leaving him. Because she knew she had him by the strings, but soon Bri came in the picture she tried putting her claws into him.

When they (Bri and Eric) went to Aryanna party, I knew it was a set up to break Bri & Eric up... but in the end, I was glad that Bri was forgiving Eric and the Spring Fling & not only that Sam and Savanah started dating too it would’ve been cool that they got a book also.

Btw; when you meet the family you know it’s real! Plus; Eric mom liked Bri better than Aryanna right there told Eric something; Aryana wasn’t good for him whereas Bri was and vise versa.

Cute and sweet

I'm not a fan of insta-love at all but I liked this story. Probably because the couple didn't act like cock-eyed idiots. It wasn't difficult to feel sorry for Eric. He had been in a bad relationship for so long he had no clue what a good one actually felt like. Bri was quiet, composed and confident. Nice to read a story where the girl wasn't the underdog waiting to be saved by mister popular.

The book could have been edited better. Letters were missing in words, a few sentences didn't make sense and the main character, Bri, calls her best friend by her own name. Confusing. All in all it's a quick enjoyable read.

I received a free copy of this book however all thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.
This is the second book in the "Never Have I Ever....." series and it's just as brilliant as the first. Although it's marketed as a stand alone it does include a spoil alert on the first book in the series, so if you think you might enjoy the series (which lets face it, why wouldn't you?!!) make sure you read them in order.
This is a short, sweet, teenage love story that's brilliant for when you just need a little escape (and perhaps a reminder of younger years?! 😉).

Adorable YA story

Turns out I really love cute high school novels. Maybe I'm just feeling nostalgic, but I've been enjoying them lately. Bri and Eric are adorable. The story is super sweet, and likable and just like watching one of those adorable Netflix movies that have been coming out lately... that said, this series of books would be perfect for Netflix ;) ;) (hint hint to anyone who knows how to make that happen, lol)

This book was a nice, quick read. However, there wasn't really much of a story here. Most of the conversations between the two characters are glossed over with sentences like "we spoke all night talking about everything." As a reader, you don't really get to know the characters or what they're like. There's also some inconsistencies like how the two characters had supposedly spoken about his father's death a few years ago, and yet when he mentions it later in the books it's almost as if she didn't know about it and he had to explain it.

I love the beginning where it slyly brings up the characters from the first book. Bringing up Kenzie and Gavin makes you feel connected to their world and how the stories are tied together if only by their school and town. ❤️❤️ I love that there isn’t too much drama of course there is some but I feel like some authors just add more drama to make their stories longer. This set of stories are short and sweet. Very adorable high school romance.

Another Success from Juliet Bardsley!

I loved everything about this novel, from beginning to end. Except Aryana, of course. This novel felt so real, the characters were genuine, the high school social stuff felt so relatable, and I think this is the perfect summer romance novel for anyone just getting into the summer romance genre. As I said before, this is another triumph of short literature from Juliet Bardsley!

Short and sweet!

I kinda needed this after a more dramatic read. It was light and fluffy with an easily solvable problem and a great ending. Sometimes the way the guys talked made it pretty obvious that a woman wrote their lines, but I don’t care. Haha!

Cute characters

I did spot two sex changes in this book, that pulled me out of the story, a few grammatical errors here and there and the characters moved a little fast but other than that I did enjoy this book

Love this sweet, fast, high school romance. Also another I would let my daughter read. I love underdog books. It's not real most the time but it's the hope I guess. I really enjoyed its short sweetness.

Short and sweet

This was a quick read for me, it was sweet in parts but felt very rushed. I would like to have read more interactions between them more conversations and texts but it was cute.

Spoiler

They fell in love in 2 weeks, it was a short read, that part I don’t mind. It was just unrealistic and you knew what would happen next while reading. Like, when Eric’s old girlfriend kissed him and he pushed her back but Bri did see him push her away and ran away crying 😒

Fine

Parts felt quite similar to the first book in the series so got a little bored but it was still a simple, short, clean high school story story. If you’re looking for a predictable “hallmark” storyline then this will still fit the bill.

This was a quick read. Nothing original with the plot but I loved the characters in the book.

High school fake dating later turns real has a roadblock ends with a grand gesture (not a public one in this one)
I love reading fake romances for the grand gestures :p

Okay

This booke had more edit errors than the first and a very similar story line. Also, the story felt a bit rushed.
