Danger, Flight, Freedom?
This is a fast-paced adventure short story. An introduction to a series. With three women elf running for freedom: Vala and her wife and daughter. I would have loved to read more about those three, but the author warns at the end of the story that although there are more stories set in the same world, none of them are about this little family. Nonetheless, this short story sucks you right into this world and makes you longing for more!

I started reading without benefit of knowing the Spellster world. Despite this, I found "The Leap to Freedom" to be an adrenaline rush of non-stop action starting with the first paragraph. That's the thing about fantasy. In an epic saga, the author has all the time in the world to build a world; in a short story the reader must accept a new reality pretty quickly. Alien forces your suspension of disbelief in the very first sentence.

Although I have favorite genres, and fantasy is one of them, I h

Interesting short is a little rough

The writing is a little rough. The pacing is clearly intended to be fast, given the action of the story, but it's dragged down by the big words and complicated sentence structure. Also the exposition comes in choppy bits. The background info is important, but it could have been integrated better.

The story itself is an interesting tease. The characters are elves running away from human slavers. I wasn't sure why only some of them had magic or who the Oracles wer

WOW. This story, though short, packed a punch. The characters' fear, their intense terror, bled through the page with every word chosen. I hoped and worried for Vala and her wife and their adopted child as they strove to escape the cruelty of their human oppressors. I was not expecting to enjoy this story as much as I did, as many of the prequel freebies I've received from other authors have been found lacking. But this
