A romantic at heart, Andrea has always been a storyteller. An avid reader since a young age, she never planned to pen her own romance novel but, on a whim, and with no plan, she discovered her passion. Known for her slow burn small town romances, Andrea prides herself on writing relatable characters that the reader cheers for and secondary characters who bring the sass and laughs to each story.

Settled in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and dog, she counts down the days when her adult children come home for a visit. Even if it means more laundry!

Taylor and Henry joined the military together straight out of high school. Over a decade later, Taylor’s no longer in the service and now owns/runs a bar in Lexington. He’s shocked one day to receive a call that Henry has died—not in the line of duty, but due to a drunk driver. And Henry’s left behind his pregnant wife, Scarlett.

Scarlett is shocked to lose Henry, especially while pregnant with their son. Everyone sees her as the grieving widow, but what no one knew was that she and Henry’s marriage was over and they were planning on getting a divorce as soon as the baby was born. When Taylor shows up for the funeral, he’s a welcoming, calming presence.

When Scarlett goes into preterm labor due to excessive stress and a break in at her home, Taylor is by her side. And after Nicholas is born, Taylor opens his home to them both. Even though it’s only been months since Henry’s death, it’s been even longer since there was any love and romance in their marriage. And now Taylor and Scarlett find themselves falling harder for each other by the day.

Promise Her by Andrea Johnston is book 1 in the Military Men of Lexington series. This was such a heartfelt and sweet romance between Taylor and Scarlett. I loved how protective of Scarlett Taylor was. The “suspense” element wasn’t my favorite, as it was clear all along who the culprit was, but I can see how the addition of it helped move certain parts of the plot along. I definitely want to continue with the series. 4/5 stars.

This book is definitely a departure from this author's usual, but I love where Johnston takes us in Promise Her!

We've met Taylor before - he and his bar, Country Road, make appearances in the Country Road series. But this book allows us to get to know him up close and personal. And I really liked what I see! Taylor is swoony, we know that. But he's also such a good man and a stand up guy. He's dealing with the loss of Henry, his best friend since childhood, and trying to make sure Henry's widow and unborn baby have everything they need.

Scarlett, pregnant and widowed. But there's so much more to Scarlett & Henry's story that people don't know. We watch her deal with that, with the thought of being a single parent, and with her feelings for Taylor.

Sparks fly but they both try so hard to fight any feelings because of Henry. This book has a super slow burn, but anything else would not have been true to the story and their feelings. The anticipation, the "will they" will keep you reading! This book reminds you that everyone deserves happiness and it doesn't always come tied up in a neat little package with a bow. I love a book that hits me hard in my feelings, and this one did just that. I had tears, I laughed, I cheered! Taylor is definitely one of those characters the women are going to love, but I also found myself wanting to wrap Scarlett up in a hug and be friends - she is an amazing woman who, while vulnerable due to her situation, has so much strength and grace despite what life has dealt her!

Add in a little mystery/intrigue, and some wonderful minor characters that I hope we see again very soon (hello Grant & Connor!!), and some appearances by some old favorites make this book nothing short of amazing!

“I may not be worthy of her or her son, but for the first time in my life I want to live my life with love and no regret.”

4.5 Stars

If you’ve read any the Country Road series or Small Town Heart then you’ve met Scarlett and Taylor...

Taylor.
Bar owner.
Former military man.
Best friend of Henry Gilbert.

Scarlett.
Expecting mother.
Henry Gilbert’s widow.

Y’all. These two. They gave me all the feels!
I just recently read (as in two days ago) Small Town Heart and met Scarlett and Henry. They got under my skin and I wanted to see more them. I honestly didn’t expect what happened.
But Scarlett and Taylor are literally perfect together. Her sweet nurturing love paired with his protective alpha love makes this story a must read!

I cannot wait to read more about the Military Men of Lexington!

This is the first book in the Military Men of Lexington series. It’s a spin-off series from the Country Road series. It’s a standalone. You do not have to read any other books to enjoy it.

I feel like this book was different from anything Andrea has written. The heroine is a pregnant widow. The hero was one of her husband’s best friends. It’s not your typical boy meets girl story. I enjoyed it being different. It checked a lot of boxes.

Promise Her sets up this new series. I’m already looking forward to the next book.

I voluntarily read an early copy.

Andrea Johnston writes the best small-town romances. Promise Her was a sweet, sexy with light angst. This romance had ALL the feels and I can't recommend it enough!!!!

She’s always been my best friend’s wife, my friend, but the moment we kissed everything changed. Being here with her, experiencing these moments as she prepares to welcome her son, means something to me. She means something to me. I know there is nothing I won’t do for her. I will care for her, protect her, and most of all promise her. Promise her safety and love, in whatever form she’ll take it.

Wow. Andrea Johnston writes a powerful romance with Promise Her. I have always loved the stories she releases since I discovered her work a year ago and yet, Promise Her has to be one of my very favorites. It’s a passionate, slow burn romance where feelings run deep and death further solidifies the connection between Scarlett and Taylor, friends with one common denominator... one which should put them solidly in the friend zone. Only as forbidden as their relationship is, it’s also a natural and beautiful evolution between two best friends united in grief over the passing of someone they both loved dearly. But appearance can be deceiving as the Promise Her storyline unveils. As the romance blooms between Scarlett and Taylor, so did my emotions with this beautifully written dual POV small-town, military romance.
Taylor Cain is the type of man women dream of meeting, one who is unattainable and almost fictitious.

Readers will remember Taylor from the Country Road Series, where his bar, Country Road provides a backdrop to much of the series. Yet the Military Men of Lexington is a spin-off and Taylor’s book is the first in this new series—a series I can’t wait to read more of! This book is without a doubt emotional and I was very invested in the story... in the characters and in their much deserved HEA. As emotional as Promise Her is, it's also entertaining as well. Sweet and lightly sexy with characters that you truly want to see achieve that ultimate HEA. Your heart will be invested in this one. It’s a story of the emotional devastation of losing your first love… only to find new love as a result! Having read many of the books in Andrea’s catalog this year, I would say that Taylor is my favorite hero she’s written. Getting into his head and learning more about him has always been on my mind, and I was thrilled when Andrea announced her intention to release his story. So yes, I was totally Gah Gah for Taylor... But I won’t lie, the real draw for this story came after I read Small-Town Heart, which has cameos from Henry and Scarlett. I was dying to know the story behind the happy couple that was introduced in the café… and the woman who becomes Mercy’s best friend. I was also drawn to the connection I have to a story regarding the wife of a service member. As a military spouse myself, I found it easy to identify with Scarlett as the heroine, although we have little in common—yet, Andrea really wrote a woman that we can all see in ourselves. Her skill with creating characters that we find a connection to is something I look forward to in each book I read by Andrea and it's what keeps her on the top of my TBR for the books I have yet to get to read by this author.
I won’t tell Taylor that one of the biggest kinks in our armor, in our marriage, was Henry’s never-ending jealousy of his best friend.

I cannot recommend this story enough and would tell you to sit with tissues because they will be put to use. I don’t cry easily—and it's rare that a book makes tissues a necessity for me—but I used them while reading Promise Her more than one. Promise Her is without a doubt a solid 5-star read and you're missing out if you're still pursuing reviews and not one-clicking this book immediately!!!

Quotes:
I’ve loved Henry Gilbert for ten years and for each of those years, I prepared myself for his deployments and the possibility he may not return. What I didn’t know was that one senseless act would completely change everything I had prepared for.

Our friendship was tested over the years, but nothing caused a rift between us, brothers by choice at a young age, until Scarlett. Henry’s inability to appreciate the gift he had at home pissed me off.

It’s important to be strong for Scarlett. That I’m here for her like Henry would want.

These men were brothers in the truest form, and as much as they loved one another, they were also each other’s worst enemy at times.

I have to preface this review by saying, Andrea Johnston is one of my absolute favorite authors. Her books speak to me in a way that many, especially in the romance genre can not, because her characters always feel so real.

Promise Her is a little bit different. There are a lot of "feels" in Taylor and Scarlett's story. From the beginning when Scarlett is left a widow and pregnant, to the drama that unfolds at the end.

This is a slow burn type story too, as the two of them work to figure out their feelings and how things will look as Scarlett's hubby was Taylor's best friend.

To add another trope to the mix, its a military romance as well, as Henry and Taylor all served together. I have to admit, I'm not usually a fan of military romances, but I've read a few recently and they've all been stellar, and really, in my eyes Andrea Johnston can do no wrong.

What makes this story so real and so darned good is how Scarlett, Taylor and all of the support group that surround her after Henry's death, become more than characters on the page. There life plays out just as though you were standing in the room with them.

This story takes you through the ups and downs of her pregnancy, while she sorts out her feelings for Taylor and deals with a bit of intrigue in her life as well.

I loved that the romance was slow although the chemistry was there from the start and that includes the sex.

This story was just superb. It tugs at your heartstrings in all the right places. It makes you cry. It makes you cheer. It makes you have hope for happy endings for everyone.

This is a NEW to me author & books! I was so excited to get a chance to read this, I've heard great things about it already and the author!

This was nothing I expected. I assumed and boom was surprised. It's a beautiful story of friends-to-lovers, small town, military romance that will kick it up!! The hero is very strong, swoon worthy and lovable! The heroine is a surprise to me, to be honest. It's just not the traditional sense therefore I hung onto every page and every word. I love when expect then it hits you differently and now you're hooked. This book was definitely a hook for me!

After the outcome of a tragedy, Taylor gets it in his head that he has a duty to do and a promise to uphold. Scarlett may not have known of before but the present is the present and sadly she is the only one out of the two living in it. With being as pregnant as she is at that time, you would think she would be happy (happy to an extent) but she is feeling like she is going to lose Taylor too. She can't understand her feeling or put them together, so what does a very pregnant woman do at that time? Sit on the floor in her bedroom listening to sappy love song, of course, duhh! What breaks my hear tin this is HER family, I mean I can understand maybe to a point but my heart really breaks for her because of them!

It's a slow burn for me and the agony of what if...but I loved it because of it! I am rating this book a 5 PLUS PLUS & HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING!

“Life is strange; sometimes, even surrounded by friends and those who care about you the most, loneliness can consume you. I’ve experienced it firsthand and that loneliness is stifling. But actually being alone, with nobody in your daily life, in your corner supporting you, that’s something I’d never experienced.”

This book and author got to me in the way that no book has gotten to me before. Maybe it was the mindset that I was in when reading it but I just couldn’t get through most of it without tearing up. And when a book makes you want to cry that much, you know it’s good. And that quote (above) just sucker punches you where it hurts.

Promise Her starts off with Taylor and Scarlett, two people brought together by the grief of losing Henry (Scarlett’s estranged husband/Taylor’s best friend) and though guilt consumes both of them for the development of feelings that neither can control, unexpected circumstances bring them together. Not only does this book contain an adorable couple who just goes through the most to finally get together but also the inclusion of an adorable baby boy, and loosely quoting Scarlett.. men and babies just add up to a bunch aww worthy scenes.

I have to admit the first half of this book was a bit slow for my tastes. I enjoy a good slow burn but I didn't get that feeling with this one. I felt Taylor and Scarlett's connection instantly and then things fell flat for me for a bit. But after about 50-60% things picked up again and I was totally engrossed in the story.

I love when authors and their characters throw societal expectations out the window and just go for things that make them happy. When this finally happened my tiny heart grew and wanted to explode out of my chest. Much like Scarlett I had tears of joy running down my face.

I loved how Taylor, and all the rest of the guys really, stepped up for Scarlett and become her protector and family. All the characters in this book were great for me. I loved seeing some familiar names from other books giving this series the right set up for just all around emotional, easy, feel good stories. This sets up a great intertwined series and I honestly can't wait to read the next one. (Lord please tell me it's Grant)

This is the first book I have read from Andrea. This was a gripping heart wrenching a little suspense sweet storyline. Taylor and Henry have been best friends since they were 5 . One tragic event ends that. But Henry leaves someone behind that needs Taylor. But will be able to put aside his guilt and take care of her. I love Scarlett . I loved how even when things are going rough for her she tries to remain strong. She deals with so much but still remains strong for her little one. This was a very sweet enjoyable story about moving on after something tragic. Love Taylor and Scarlett together. These two have some amazing chemistry. I will definitely be reading more from this author. Highly recommend.

This was my first read by Andrea Johnston and it won't be my last. Promise Her was a sweet friends to lovers slow romance. The circumstances surrounding their friendship was wrought with sad history. We get taken along for the ride to experience their gradual slide from friendship to more. This book written from Taylor's point of view and Scarlett's point of view. I normally don't point out this information but, I think, it's vital to the story line to get in both character's heads. There is a close knit group of friends and you see how important friends are in times of need.

Do you like friends to lovers? Check. Do you like romance? Check. Do you like a little mystery? Check.
This book has quite a few elements and makes for a very enjoyable read.

Oh my this series. Yes they can be read independently, but why would you. Taylor Cain has been the glue to Country Road series, in my opinion. Now he broke the mold on swoonworthy for all men to be read....

Scarlett Gilbert overcomes so much, but still is one of the strongest ladies around. She could have easily gave up, but she didn't. She rose high and felt with her whole heart again.

I have so many amazing highlights from this book that I want to not ever forget it.

Different than my other books, Promise Her is an emotional journey of loss and new love. Scarlett and Taylor find hope and happiness in each other's arms in a time others would expect them to break. Sometimes love comes when you least expect it.

Absolutely wonderful and heart wrenching. In my opinion this is one of her best books. Taylor and Scarlett ripped at my heart strings between the tears I had at the love and adoration they saw in one another. This is a story that you read where all of the emotions come off the page, right into your soul. Highly recommended read that will stick with you for a long time.

I think this just became my favorite Andrea book.
We've met Taylor before but he was a secondary character. I loved finding out who he is and seeing his softer side. Scarlett knows who she is and what she wants. Events of her life recently hold things back a little. They have amazing chemistry and a great foundation of friendship to build on.

Slow Burn Southern Charm

I loved this book! The slow burn. The southern charm. The protectiveness Taylor had with Scarlett. The “family” that Taylor and his brothers in arms were. I loved how smoothly the two world collaborate. Seeing the two worlds come together, Lexington and Fayhill. The title of this book was perfect. Fantastic read! Can’t wait for more men of Lexington.

Truly amazing! This authors writing is phenomenal and her talent to deliver the perfect amounts of romance, suspense, mystery and sexy times blows me away with every book she writes. The characters are downright beautiful inside and out; they drew me in and I felt their emotions throughout the entire story.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for more stories from this fantastic group of family/friends.

Sweet Story ❤️

I had been waiting for this book to release because I just knew that Taylor would be amazing! I was not disappointed! Taylor was a man of honor with a heart of gold. He and Scarlett were the perfect pair that wound up in an unperfect situation, but their bond was like no other! I loved this sweet couple and hope to see more of them in Grant and Conner’s story!

Taylor Cain was a golden boy in high school, yet instead of taking the full ride to college he enlists with his best friends--one (Henry Gilbert) he remains friends with throughout their military career. Henry lives through multiple deployments only for tragedy to occur at home. Taylor being the loyal best friend is there for Henry's pregnant wife, Scarlett. The more Taylor is there for Scarlett the more guilty he feels. He feels numerous emotions about his slow burning relationship with Scarlett including guilt.

Scarlett has kept a secret from everyone including their closest friends, Connor, Grant, and Taylor--Henry and her were divorcing. The day of the tragedy, she argued with her husband. Guilt is an overwhelming emotion for the new widow along with what ifs. So many what ifs. She's scared. This precious baby is growing inside her but she's alone. Connor and Grant will be there for her but who would hold her hand in the delivery room? The only person she truly trusts is her husband's best friend. Again guilt keeps her from going after what she truly wants. She shouldn't be thinking about Taylor the way she is. She shouldn't rely on him or trust him as she does. She's tired of everyone looking at her with pity and sympathy in their eyes.

This book was emotional on so many levels. Both characters are mourning and struggling to find their place in the world after such a tragedy. Johnston conveyed the characters to perfection. My heart broke when Scarlett and Taylor's did. I felt everything they did. The perfect opening book for a new series. Loved having a glimpse of Jameson and Ashton!! While Promise Her has a completely different feel than Johnston's Country Road series....it is definitely worth reading.

Scarlett Gilbert has just lost her husband. Widowed and pregnant, she finds comfort, solace, and friendship with her husband's best friend, Taylor Cain.

Taylor and Scarlet's relationship is not an insta-love or immediate attraction. Theirs is more of a slow burn; a connection that builds over time in the most unexpected of ways. Though they both feel it, neither is sure of the other's feelings, and they each fear how their attraction may be perceived by others.

"I will care for her, protect her, and most of all promise her."

Taylor is a good guy. He is fiercely loyal and protective. As his feelings for Scarlett began to change, I could feel his internal struggle. His guilt. His anger at himself.

"Life is strange; sometimes, even surrounded by friends and those who care about you most, loneliness can consume you."

Scarlet is funny and sweet, but her heart is broken, for many reasons. And she feels like she is suffocating under the weight of the secret she carries.

Promise Her does a really good job of showing how we are never prepared for loss, how we all grieve in different ways, and how even though we may struggle with guilt, it is okay to go on and live after loss. It is okay to laugh; it is okay find beauty in the world, and it is okay to find happiness again.

If I took one lesson away from this story, it is this:

"Live the life we want, the one we dream of, and make it our reality."

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Promise Her

The first book in the Military Men of Lexington series by Andrea Johnston
I am looking forward to this series very much.

This is the story of Taylor and Scarlett.

Scarlett is pregnant when her husband is killed very suddenly when running an everyday job, Henry has survived many overseas deployment with the military but a simple task ends in tragedy, Taylor is Henry best friend and the person who he enrolled with in the military and so he is also Scarlett’s go to when Henry is killed, he rushes to her side and steps in to do anything to protected her and her unborn child......but things never run the course they are meant too...both Scarlett and Taylor start having feelings for each other.....now time for you to read the book to find out what happens.

This is not the normal writing style of Andrea and I am guessing she was completely out of her comfort zone in writing it...and I very much appreciate that....it is a very slow burning friends to lovers book, and being honest a bit too slow burning for me, that does not mean I did not love it. I did...I thought that it was a very beautiful book and I fell in love with Taylor and wanted to be Scarlett and now I can’t wait until the next in the series. If you are a fan of slow burning book with a HEA then I highly recommend this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 “Trips don’t have to be grand to serve their purpose. Sometimes a new landscape is all we need to reset ourselves.”
.
If you enjoy:
✔️Military Romance
✔️Slow Burn
✔️Friends to lovers
✔️Splash of Suspense
✔️Dual POV
Then this may be the book for you!
.
Life changes quickly when Scarlett’s husband, who is Taylor’s Best friend, dies. Taylor is determined to be there for his best friends pregnant wife. But the more time they spend together, the more their feelings for one another begin to change. But it isn’t a straightforward road to love.
.
This is my first read by this author and I was not disappointed! This book has a friends to lovers feel. That is definitely a slow burn but the chemistry is there from the start. You feel so much in this story, especially that heartache in the beginning. It feels so real. You felt for Scarlett. But Taylor, gosh he was so swoon worthy. Such a standup guy. I adored him.
.
There’s a little splash of mystery in this one. And the family connection- the military men that support Scarlett... probably my favourite part of this read! I found it a bit slow at times. But a sweet story about moving on after tragedy. Definitely recommend and I look forward to reading more by this author!
