Normally, I'd give a 1 star or no stars to a book I 'lemmed' (skipped/gave up on a book), however, Dream Shadow was different enough that I think 2 stars would be a fairer score.

This book is different. I also see that it's a reprint from an earlier publishing, I might have reconsidered buying in the first place had I known that before hand.

I love book about psychics and this had all the components that should have made me enjoy the story, however, it didn't. The biggest failure, and to be honest, there are several problems with this story, is the hero. I thought he was a total d-bag, alpha-hole and he ruined this story for me.

I actually thought it was the heroine who'd be the problem. Grace is cold and weirdly unemotional, or emotionally stunted. But as the story progressed, I started to like her. The problem turned out to be Brice. I just couldn't get over such a pushy, 'I know best and you'll do it my way' arrogant ass. Frankly, I didn't want to deal with him and couldn't understand why this heroine would.

Which brings me to some other problems. The pace and storytelling is just off. There is a lot of telling vs showing. It felt like I was reading a recap of previous episode instead of watching the show.

To be fair, I read about 60 pages, then lemmed the rest until the last two chapters. This was also weird because I was confused. Now, I know what you're thinking, "Well, duh, you skipped a huge chunk". But that's not why I was confused, you see, the 'climax' of the story happens about 70 pages before the end and then you get a 70 page wrap-up. That's what I mean about weird pacing.

The bummer part is that this could have been a really tight and tense story, but it reads like we're being told it third or fourth hand and that kills the suspense.

I can't recommend this book unless you want something really weird and different and you have a high tolerance for some general wtfery.

Grace, a psychic tracker for the Army, is called in to help find a missing child. Events, including a clue leading to another possible abduction, cause her and her regiment to stay put and point to a trap that may be set for her. In addition, the growing attraction between her and the local sheriff puzzles and confuses her with its intensity. Her job is all about keeping emotion out of the mix.

Brice Campbell, the local sheriff, becomes desperate enough to find a missing child and to go the unconventional route, which entails asking for a psychic’s help. He does not expect to have an instant attraction to Grace, so tries everything to break through her defenses and get through her walled up emotions. Events point to her being in danger, therefore he vows to keep her safe before it is too late.

Helping to find the abducted child seems to be a lure to get her to Denton County. Other events conspire to keep and trap her there, while Brice tries to get her to open up and reach her human side before she becomes just her job. Experience has her believing any relationship can be dangerous, so she avoids any hint of one beyond her friendship with her C.O.

The extent and scope of Grace’s power is not very clear, and her single-minded affinity for the forest just adds confusion. While intimate interactions between Brice and Grace could be hot, the actual relationship does not really feel tangible. The plot is not very cohesive and does not make much sense. The premise is interesting, but things just do not fit. Point-of-views and scene shifts are sometimes abrupt and confusing.

There was a lot of action and I enjoyed the relationship between Brice and Grace, but a lot of the plot points seemed unrealistic, the way that Grace is treated within her military unit and the way that she is forced to live seems unbelievable, not to mention illegal. There is no real explanation for how Grace came to be involved with the unit. Grace also seems to vary between a female Rambo to naive and needing to be taken care of. I didn't fully buy into the depth of Brice and Graces relationship by the end of the book. There is even a part where Brice is thinking that he and Grace haven't really had any real conversations, but they communicate in other ways (sexually). Also, SPOILER TO FOLLOW

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

I didn't like that in the last chapter, Grace is about to give birth and decides that she isn't going to tell anyone, including Brice, because it is a private moment. The fact that she doesn't even want to share it with Brice somewhat disturbed me.

I would give this book five stars. I loved this book because it was not like so many others these days. From the moment Grace met Brice you knew something special was going to happen.

Often times I can not tell where I have placed my keys. I feel there is something lingering out there that I am supposed to do but I just can't put my finger on it. Well Grace could tell me where my keys were if she was not so busy looking for lost people. Her psychic ability is a thing of legends. But as with all psychic, gypsies and fortune tellers, they can read everyone's life but their own. Grace came in search of another's lost child and in the end found her own. Come into Grace"s world and find out how it is to be needed by the world but wanted by no one until your true someone steps into you way.

There are elements of this story that I really enjoyed, but it needs some serious editing. Not for grammar or mistakes but for content. There are rather jarring scene changes. The MCs don't really connect in a way that made me care about their HEA. There are elements that aren't really ever explained and the ending is just odd.

That's the bad stuff. The good stuff is pretty darn good though, which is why it gets 3 stars. I really like the supporting characters and if they have a story I'll probably read it. I like the detail of the scenes, particularly the historical reenactment part. I would mention more but I don't want to leave spoilers. Suffice it to say I'm glad I read the book, it was just frustrating because it could have been so much better with a little tweaking.

Great read

Great read

Ever since I read Dream Specter,I fell in lovqe with the story ,about this unique family. Granted,I read all books out of order. But I loved the story line ,the characters. Mary Wine,I'm even reading your high landers stories, which,I very much look forward when they are released to public. Loved this story, which by rights,it should have been the first to read. But,weather you read all in order or separate, they all are interesting, attention graver and of course ,so romantic in its own way.
Can't wait to read more.

I didn't really care for Dream Shadow. Grace is a tracking psychic brought to Brice's town to find a missing child, but that wasn't the real reason Grace was to be there. There were other forces out to get Grace and that was where some of the suspense came from. The plot was not very cohesive and didn't make much sense, IMO. Brice and Grace had zero chemistry and there was a side romance that I didn't care about either. I just hope the next book in this series is better.

(SIGH).. This book had me so confused and in knots I didn't know what to do with myself. The heroine made me want to choke her on occasion as she had some serious issues. But and I mean big BUT the action is this book was awesome (which is why it got 3 stars and not 1). I really liked how it kept me on my toes and guessing who the bad guy was. I also liked the dialogue and the interaction between the sub-characters. It was an okay book. Not like her other books..

Quite a different paranormal story, with a young psychic woman 18controlled 19 by a military unit to use her gift to find missing people so the unit can rescue them. She meets with a county sheriff in the midst of a search and begins to question the way of life that is lead for her by the military. Well written.

Didn't really like the psychic heroine, or the slightly better than Neanderthal hero.

could-not-finish
February 23, 2016
I tried to get into this book but the heroine to me was so unlikeable and my opinion didn't change even though I kept on reading. So no rating because I could not finish.
