I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written and well-plotted addition to the series. I haven’t read the first book in the series, How to Tempt an Earl, but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment of this book. Actually, this book just made me want to read that book as well! I loved the main characters – both are stubborn and thoroughly convinced that their way is the only right way, and it is a delight to watch them have to figure ou

How to Best a Marquess by Tina Gabrielle is book Two in the Raven Club Series. This is the story of Hugh Vere, the Marquess of Deveril and Ellie Swift. I have read the previous book, but fee you can make this as a standalone book.
Hugh and Ellie were once young and in love. Hugh was the second son of the Marquess so he felt that it was better if he broke Ellie's heart and joined the military. Ellie of course was heart broken but she learned from that experience that men aren't to be trusted. Now

How to Best a Marquess is the second book in Tina Gabrielle's The Raven Club series. This one can totally stand alone, but I recommend reading the first because it was such a fun book. However, I think I enjoyed this one even more!

Lady Ellie Swift is at The Raven Club, her brother's gambling and boxing club. While wearing a mask to protect her identity, she is kissed for luck by the handsome boxer in the middle of a bout. Hugh Vere, now the Marquess of Deveril, soon discovers that underneath the

Once upon a time Ellie and Hugh were in love. Until he made the choice to “do the right thing” for her future and leave her by staging a very public humiliation. Doesn’t matter that he loved her deeply and only wanted what was best for her, he took that choice away from Ellie by making the decision himself. Now, years later, circumstances have changed – well, some things have Hugh is now in a place of power and he wants the Raven. Ellie now hates every man around her,

I'll admit this isn't my usual genre but the blurb on the book drew me in and I'm glad I went for it.
What a fun, sexy romp with Ellie and her rival Hugh and life inside the Raven Club! Who would have thought?
Ellie's brother owns the Raven club and she's been a dedicated sister and worker at the club, keeping the books after her brother and wife are soon due to have a child. The club is private and exclusive, where ladies wear masks and can come to gamble along with men. A private side room is wh

So I had requested this book a couple of weeks ago and kept going back and forth on when to read it due to some of the reviews that I had read and also because I was afraid of what Hugh had done to her years ago, I am so not the person to condone cheating. I am glad that my nosiness had me putting everything aside and reading the book, I did enjoy and have found a new author folks I think there was a previous book with how some of the secondary characters were portrayed I could be mistaken howev ...more

Yet Ellie and Hugh’s past romance, may threaten the competition before it even starts.

My first from this author, but definitely not my last!

Ellie and Hugh have a past--he broke her heart five years ago, and now he's back, threatening the future she'd planned for herself, one where she takes over ownership of her brother's club (the Raven Club that the series is named for). So you've got a second chance romance here, with a healthy dollop of lovers-to-enemies-to-(hopefully!)-lovers again. Ellie and Hugh have all kinds of chemistry, s

The Raven Club, London 1825 For a heartstopping moment, he was inches from her face. "A kiss from a lovely lady for luck, he said, breathing heavily. Before she could blink, those perfect lips pressed against hers. Hot. Swift. Over in seconds as he turned to his opponent. Oh my God. It was the devil returned, as Ellie recognized him." Wowza. Talk about getting my attention as our heroine was masked watching a boxing match.

An enjoyable read. However, while the book is definitely well written, it is a story that just did not grab my total attention. I would consider this one a beach read. One that did not take a lot of concentration. It seems like many other historical romances that are already written. I want to be fair and make sure I put across that the author is talented and the story is good. The characters are also written well. I did not care for the extreme over the top stubborn behavior of the heroine but ...more

I enjoyed this book. Ellie was absolutely wonderful. I loved her dedication to her beliefs. What confused me was Hugh and her dedication to him. Hugh was a butt for most of the book. While the reader knows that he only fake cheated on her in the past, she doesn't know that until the end. What's more, Hugh almost always delivers information in a condescending or patronizing way. While I loved Ellie, I cannot understand how she can like Hugh. While I'm glad we finally get an apology from him, I pe ...more

I love it when a new Tina Gabrielle book comes out because I know it will be a great read. We read about Ellie’s brother Ian in the first book of this series and the Raven Club adventures continue. Ellie and Hugh are great characters with great depth. They are not run of the mill and their exploits are binge reading material. Second chance romance is a favorite so, yay, it was the basis of this story also. Loved the interaction of Ellie and Hugh. If you have not read Ms. Gabrielle’s books, start ...more

Ellie is determined to never have her heart broken again. She is feisty, witty, and fiercely loyal. Hugh has become her greatest nemesis since he broke her heart. The two are now in direct competition for one prize. The story is filled with these two trying to outwit each other in words and deed. They are both passionate about the things they believe in and it spills over into major clashes. That kiss at the boxing ring grabbed me from the start! I think the author hangs out at the gym watching muscular men doing pull ups. How else can she describe a scene so well! Tina Gabrielle has a wonderful series in The Raven Club books. She keeps the storyline moving through character actions and dialogue between the characters. I've enjoyed Ellie and Hugh and I look forward to the next book!

This is a good story.

Ellie Swift is determined to be an independent woman. No desire for marriage and love, the only thing standing in her way is Hugh Vere, the man who broke her heart into a million pieces five years earlier. He's back, sexier than ever and in direct competition with her to win the life of her dreams.

This second chance romance was intriguing, with the added layer of suspense and danger to the plot. The plot was paced well, and was not overly complicated.

I recommend this book.
