Twisted Truth Box Set

Rate this book
This includes four novels full of visceral and provocative, raw and gritty, heart-pumping, edge-of-your-seat reads.

MONSTER: It takes a survivor to know a madman. When the police need to crawl inside the mind of a monster, they call Caroline. But there’s something different about this latest case. Something familiar. Teenage girls are being murdered, their organs removed. As the scope of horror widens, Caroline comes to one terrible, impossible conclusion.

ULTIMATE SACRIFICE: Vickie has always lived a quiet, ordinary life in an equally quiet and ordinary small town. Yet one fateful night a child turns up dead in the woods behind her house in a ritualistic-cult slaughter, leaving Vickie unsure of who to ultimately trust.

VANQUISHED: A secret island. A sadistic society. And the woman who defies all odds to bring it down. Yesterday, Valoria’s worst problem was getting her sister to school on time. Today, she’s a slave in a perverse world. And an even worse fate awaits her sister if Valoria can’t become a cold-blooded killer.

KILLER AMONG: Lane swore never to be like her late mother. But now she too is a killer. One difference remains—she only stalks and punishes the guilty. But while trailing a new serial killer, Lane makes a terrible miscalculation and now she's the one being hunted.

(Publisher's Note: These are crossover novels with characters in their late teens to mid-twenties)

A fascinating collection of four psychological/crime thrillers set in Appalachia and South Florida. So glad I chose this set; it's provided me with hours of engrossing reading and inspired me to read the author's other novels.

MONSTER: Thirteen years ago twin girls were abducted in woods and held captive. One escaped. A tremendously twisted noir thriller with deep psychological insights and issues, and a whole host of stunning revelations.

THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE:

Satanic ritual? Frame-up? The prophesied End of the World or a deluded criminal? A horrible crime in rural East Tennessee upends the lives of several local families. The ending will blow you away.

VANQUISHED:

Lord Acton: "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Those with too much wealth and too little moral integrity set up a "fantasy island" in the form of an Ancient Roman "paradise." Nothing is out of bonds, including abduction, torture, and gladiator-style battles to death.

KILLER AMONG:

Third in the KILLER INSTINCT series. Lane continues her vigilante justice program, until unintentionally she kills the wrong man. Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer yet.

This box set includes four novels, which are not overtly linked together.

All four novels are very suspenseful and share: excellent pacing, strong female leads in untenable situations, and a common thematic element of revenge. By far and large, the character development is very well-executed, with a couple of exceptions in characters with fewer scenes (which definitely impedes the element).

The single major element common to all that I felt could have been improved was in the editing. All four novels had errors in homonyms (and almost homonyms), as well as near-typos (in instead of is, for example). I found these to be a distraction from the story.

Monster is the first-person narrative of the survivor of a heinous crime that comes back to haunt her when a similar crime takes place a decade or more later, revealing how the events of her childhood have and have not healed. The protagonist, who is also the first-person narrator, reveals her story through both flashbacks and the present-day events, rather than linearly. I found this was not a problem for me - in fact, I enjoyed it. I did find that some of the twists were foreseeable, but I still enjoyed the novel. (I had read this in stand-alone form, and have posted a longer review under the separate title).

Ultimate Sacrifice is also a first-person narrated tale, wherein the narrator's brother discovers the body of the neighbour's young daughter in ritualistic circumstances. The narrator struggles to cope with the fallout as it reveals cracks in what she believed was a previously firm family foundation. Again, I found the twist was not that much of a surprise to me, although the resolution of the novel certainly was, and I applaud the author for having the courage to choose that direction. I found the novel to be very claustrophobic - there is a limited cast of characters who are largely trapped in their own home due to media presence and the dynamics of small-town life. I thought this was very well-executed, although the way the villainous element was handled did come across as dated (I think setting this in the mid-1980s would have been a better fit with the author's take on the subject matter).

Vanquished was, hands-down, my favourite among the collection. I didn't mind in the least that it is a reiteration of well-known historical events that have seen both film (from the 1960s) and television (early 2010s and, in my opinion, the winner between the two) treatments. I didn't find there to be so much of a twist - probably due to my familiarity with the historical elements in question. Still, I found this iteration to be riveting, and there was sufficient variation to retain my interest. I thought the character development was, with a couple of exceptions, excellent. Focusing on the one stratum of characters (rather than trying to tell more sides of the story) was an excellent decision, although it did make character development for those other strata challenging (and I think more could have been done). This is, by far, my favourite of the author's works which I have read!

Killer Among is the third novel in the Killer Instinct series. It follows Lane, a serial killer who preys on the guilty, as she kills the wrong man in error. In order to protect herself and her loved ones, Lane gets close to her victim's family, who are trying to solve the murder themselves. This works very well as a stand-alone novel. I had also read and review this previously under the separate title.

This was a very good collection, although I did wish that any link between the novels was more obvious as, other than the fact they had contained a twist, I couldn't find one.

I received a copy of this novel through the author.

This boxed set contains the following four books: Monster; Ultimate Sacrifice; Vanquished and Killer Among. They each deal with violence, evil actions and killers to be contained or found. Each book has very dark roots into areas you may never have ever thought about. If you have a delicate disposition, then these books may not be for you! Each deals with evil psychological / thriller actions and keeps you guessing at the clues being given, as to who may be behind the worst of the actions.

There are some seriously dark issues being talked about in these books. Such as cannibalism, satanic rituals, power corrupting all, being made into a killer, serial killers, childhood memories of evil acts, vigilante justice and those with too much wealth using their wealth for evil means. These four books are some of the darkest reads I have ever come across. They are detailed, with well built-up main characters and enough twists, turns and surprises to keep you guessing to the very end. The explicit acts of depravity that are portrayed in the books are left in some parts to your imagination and others which give you tiny snippets of the reality being faced by those unfortunate victims.

A great set of books, but I would have to say Monsters was my clear favourite, with Killer Among my second favourite. Just the complexity included in each of the tales and the manner in which evil is overcome and those who faced such evil and depravity are left to fight their inner beings to act for good rather than evil. Killing the wrong person can affect a person’s soul. Losing your sister at a young age, in a shared year of despair, then under the control of another who takes you in as family, leaves you wondering upon your sanity. Just fantastic detailed reads and absolutely loved them. I can’t wait to dig into some more of the authors books. I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the books above.

Wow. This group of books by SE Green runs the gauntlet, from psychological manipulation in Monster; to demonology and murder in Ultimate Sacrifice; to slaves, warriors and the elite rich societal world in Vanquished; to serial killers, both bad and vigilante in Killer Among. There is definitely something for almost every reader to satisfy their craving for dark and deadly stories. The characters in these books were usually damaged or different from the "normal" society defined actions and feelings. This is a voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Hidden Gems Books.

This is an awesome box set, right up my alley. I first got into Ms. Green's books by reading Killer Within, and I'm so happy the third book in that series was part of this set. I really enjoyed those books, and this not only gave me an addition to that series but also other novels that are equally as good. It's easy to get lost in them and lose track of time, which I love being able to do with good books. I'm definitely going to read more from this author whenever I can.

Entertaining

This book was entertaining but it feels as though the ending were rushed. Left me with questions and a feeling I had only read 1/2 a book.

MONSTER
I wasn't too sure about the first story of this set to begin with. The constant flashbacks and hallucinations were a bit confusing, especially the hallucinations. They are used to build up the suspense as you don't know what is real and what isn't.
But after getting used to the writing style, I couldn't put this book down. Towards the end, I thought it was a bit too obvious but it still kept changing and unexpected twists turned up.
The story is about cannibalism so expect some gore but it was never overdone for effect.

I'll definitely read the other stories in this box set but I need a bit of distance and something less deranged before picking it up again assuming that the other stories are similar twisted.

ULTIMATE SACRIFICE
Agrr, I accidentally read the last sentence and therefore knew what would happen. But still the story was very gripping, I couldn't put it down. Or maybe it made it even more tense to know what was to come.
I liked how Vicki tried to find out what happened and didn't let anything stop her. It's surprising how much she discovers. It's very disturbing to think this manipulations could go so deep and wide.
And that's a bit what bothers me in the end – why did the police know so much and do so little? Why has nobody else noticed or snapped out of it? And most of all, how could THEY do this to the children?
