Remember that time you were abducted from your planet because a large lizard-like creature chose you for a mate? Abby Harris does! It doesn’t take long for the blonde beauty to go from a fun hike to a crazy, terrifying ride to a different planet where she is evaluated and injected with a stinger that now connects her to Nicolai the lizard king! She has now been claimed by him and is expected to be his bride and queen of the Raiden people. She gets caught up in politics so out of her league its hard to keep up! Abby truly experiences so much in this story that I don’t exactly understand how she doesn’t lose it completely. This is one very, unique story with new cultures, new creatures, invented histories and technologies, beautiful creative character/setting names, eroticism, romance, danger, and love! The author wholeheartedly embraces this unreal world of aliens. The alien cultures are delivered in such a way that even very strange details don’t seem too over the top. Nicolai and the Raiden’s have a thought process that is so human-like that it makes their way of life seem believable, strangely enough. By the end of the book I was totally grasping the concepts of the shaprata and the abaci! So clever and original! The names for the different planets and types of beings was fascinating as well. She does such a good job of painting the picture for the reader on how these unique characters look and act, as well as their worlds. I have to admit that I felt mildly uncomfortable with the idea of someone being abducted and convinced to love and adore their abductor. Nicolai is obviously not some type of villain, but I was disturbed by his character a lot of the time. Some of the scenes left me feeling rather uncomfortable, like when Nicolai probes her to check if she is a virgin. Although he does eventually give her a choice, it’s not without some manipulative words on his end. “Though it may kill me to do so I will take you back to earth”, he tells her. There were just a few parts that got my feminist hackles up a bit. It made for an intense story and I still didn’t want to put it down. This was a true original in storyline and world creation. This might be my first encounter with sci-fi/romance!

Overall score: I scored this book 5/5 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Short Summary of the book: Different worlds have different habits as Abby finds out. When she is abducted by Crown Prince Nicolai from the planet Raiden, she is initially furious and scared. He has chosen her as his mate and has initially not given her any choice in the matter. Can she ever learn to love him or will she refuse his advances? What I liked about the book: I liked the tough guy who was also very sensitive and in-tune with Abby. What I didn’t like about the book: I enjoyed the book in its entirety. My favourite bits in the book: Where Abby enchants nearly everyone she meets. My least favourite bits in the book: The way Nicolai’s brother treats his new bride. Any further books in the series? Any more planned by this author? I understand this is the first book in a series and I would be interested to read what happens next. What books could this be compared to and why? This book has fragments of other Science Fiction books but is unique too. Recommendation: In summary, I would recommend this book for the following readers:

Deanna Holm has written an enjoyable story. Development of the characters is well done and makes you care for them. She hooks you right from the start. Thank you.
Abby Harris, not quite out of her teens, is walking with her dog in the Cascade mountains. She is abducted by an alien, a Raiden named Nickolai, heir to the House of Nekbet, who plans to make her his wife and queen of his people. He fails, however, to take into account his captive’s feisty nature, and in the ensuing weeks, discovers that winning her heart proves to be much more difficult than capturing her body. Abby fights him every step of the way, although she does become aware of his generous and honourable nature, and her feelings towards him slowly change. In spite of herself, she sides with Nicolai in his struggles against his psychopathic brother and learns that he truly is a man to be admired and respected. Is this another example of the Stockholm Syndrome where a captive begins to bond with her abductor? Or is her changing perspective due to the injection from his shaprata? Or could it be possible that she is feeling something deeper?
Nickolai can sense all of her feelings, but Abby’s confusion fills him with doubts of his own. His fears are brought to a head when Guage, an ancient hunter charged with protecting humanity, finds Abby and informs her that he can rid her mind of all memory of what had happened and restore her to her people. Nickolai honourably allows Abby to discuss this with the hunter, standing on the sidelines, heart breaking, dreading the inevitable loss of the woman who has become his life’s blood. He is certain she will accept Guage’s offer and leave him.
Claimed by Nickolai is ostensibly a sci-fi story, skillfully crafted, professionally written, and filled with great characters. Holm has created an extraordinary world, made utterly believable by the breadth of her incredible imagination. The Raidens are an alien race with an established history and culture, with deep-rooted customs, described in such prolific and seemingly authentic detail, that it is almost impossible not to believe that this world actually exists. We meet other amazing races, in wondrous settings, with wildly creative characteristics, filled with their own desires, rivalries, and rules. A true feast for sci-fi fans.
Sometimes, however, a book can rise beyond its genre because it deals with themes that are universal. For me, this is a story as old as time. I am forcibly reminded of a heartbreaking line from Ode to a Nightingale by John Keats: ‘ ... the sad heart of Ruth, when, sick for home, she stood in tears amid the alien corn.’ Ruth, from the Christian bible, was left without any resources but her own strong nature to cope with her exile. Abby, too, is dragged into exile, bereft of all support and forced to rely only on the strength of her own will to deal with this desperate and frightening situation. She meets her state initially with anger and outright rejection, running a full plethora of emotions through reluctance to ultimate acquiescence. But this is a journey, and in that journey lies the story.
Nickolai, despite his race’s assumption that abducting females from other planets to further their own kind is perfectly normal, is a man of honour, noble even. He is an alien with a strange appearance, but his values transcend race, colour, creed. They are the values that are the bedrock of our own human code for living. Are such values truly universal? Do they carry across light-years of space to other alien cultures?
Holm’s story is a romance with its fair share of eroticism, but it is a tale that makes us examine the human spirit, its ability to cope in dire situations. It forces us, too, to look beyond the scaly skins of others to see there the same emotions we ourselves experience, the same doubts, the same fears, the same hopes. Under the skin, Holm tells us, we are all the same.
Readers of sci-fi, readers of romance, readers of erotica, will all love this story. Even readers who do not normally read any of these, will still share in the heroine’s struggle, and empathize with the novel’s broader themes. A wonderful story, beautifully told.
Denna Holm’s book Claimed by Nicolai was a delightful surprise. I went into this book intrigued by the plot, and I cannot help but love to read stories where characters live in Oregon as it is my favorite state. Of course, it does not take long for Abby to leave her home and soon finds herself dealing with the realm of planet politics and aliens. The book centers around Abby Harris, who is on a hike in the Oregon mountains with her dog when she is abducted by aliens. The aliens abduct her because their crown prince is struggling to find a mate that can give him an heir, so he decides to try going off planet. There is a lot I really enjoyed about this book from the creativity to the characters. I thought that this book was a very unique science fiction novel and stood out in the genre. The aliens that Holm’s creates are detailed, with their own histories, politics, technologies, and traditions. I found it fascinating to get to dig into the alien culture and learn about them. I also really liked the way that Holm’s explains why earth has been left out of the politics of the Alien world because earth is protected by another species called the Laizahlian. Watching Abby try to grasp the politics and rules is really interesting. She not only has to grapple with the aliens that have captured her, but she is also expected to be their queen and therefore will have some connection to the other planets and species in the universe. A truly daunting task for a human that has just been kidnapped. Abby is a fun character. She is a twenty-year-old college sophomore who loves her family, her dog, and spending time hiking. She is a normal girl who is tough and smart. Her journey was exciting, both the physical adventure but also her emotional experience and growth. Holm’s did an excellent job of giving her characters depth, and they grow throughout the story. My only complaint is that, while I do appreciate that Abby had a choice, the plot does rely on Abby needing to fall in love with her abductor, a difficult plot to pull off. Nevertheless, the story is a fun and well-written sci-fi romance story. This is the first book in the series, and I look forward to seeing where this adventure goes next. I would give this book four stars.
I felt it over explained in this one book about class system and sorry they really didn't work on a relationship as in getting to know each other . I skipped so much of explaining i couldn't tell you if they even talked about her actual life . Don't think he knew who she even was other than she thought slavery was bad liked her dog ( that seemed to disappear in last part of book) wanted to be a vet oh and thought it was wrong to kidnap woman stick stuff in them to make them sexually attractive to them and want to or will die with our them? All without permission. But hey at least I try to woo you and not force you to have sex... oh yes I do after I stuck you with my stinger that um makes you want me sexually . So I guess it's a matter of how you look at it? I really don't know much about him or what he wanted to do so .... Yea I have three stars cause I was mildly interested in the outcome but it was tedious enough that I'm pretty sure this is the last book by this author i read.
Abby is walking her dog through the mountainside when she is suddenly abducted by Nicolai a handsome but scary looking alien from Raiden. While unconscious she is transported to Nicolas’s spaceship and they travel to Nicolai’s home planet. On the way there Abby learns that Nicolai wants to bond and mate with and make her his queen. Although he is handsome he is also scary looking which freaks her out. Plus there is the business about being abducted. But as time goes by she warms to him and starts feeling different. Possible because Nicolai has injected her with his essence (and that isn’t a euphemism) Soon she can’t have enough of them and they bond is some truly racy scenes. But there are threats around the corner that can be a danger to their fledgling relationship. Can Abby survive in a hostile alien world and stay with the strange handsome alien man. This was a wonderful read and I enjoyed it a lot.

What a book. I was hooked from the beginning and could barely put it down! Just none stop action.
It starts with Abby getting kidnapped by Nicolai off a hiking trail with her dog. I kinda wish that dog kicked up slightly a more fuss over everything. Abby and Nicolai are then bonded but she does not let him complete it for a good long time. I thought the other female was going to be a big problem and she was!
I liked how Nicolai actually grew up during the bonding with Abby and he figured out that certain of his customs were not good and needed to change. She really helped him. A pity about her family and friends though. I definitely recommend reading this book!!!

An exciting sci-fi romance, the perfect stimulus on a day of reading and relaxation. The book is well written with an intriguing plot and a plethora of interesting characters, starting with the intrepid heroine Abby. Then there is alien Prince Nicolai who, in need of a mate and following his Raiden race's inbred traditions, abducts Abby from Earth, illegally, as Earth is under the protection of the vampires and the Laizahlian Council. Nicolai has his hands full convincing his recalcitrant mate to stay with him while dealing with any fallout from the abduction as well as a pressing family crisis. An entertaining story. I really liked it!

This is another great read by this author. She really does a great job with sci-fi romances.
I enjoyed how well written the story was and how developed the characters are as well as the relationships between them. The story is not rushed even though he rushes the claiming.
You really get to know the characters and understand their motivations. He wants a mate and he knows he did not do the right thing but believes she is the one for him. She is torn between her desire for him and her sadness in knowing she was not given a choice.
I really loved the growing bond between them and seeing that love become more real as the bond is tested.
Definitely not your typical alien romance! A very creative elaborate read with well-developed characters. Hats off to Ms. Denna Holm for a wonderful book which had me up all night as I read through her mystical world as Abby comes to term with being claimed by Nicolai and loving him. Packed with action, magic, love, and adventure you can't go wrong with this book! The heroine is a strong confident woman who doesn't give in easily and can hold her own while the hero is a protective alpha male who wants nothing but to hold her.

I’ve never been a science fiction or fantasy fan but do like romance in a story. As long it’s not the main subject and has another exiting element, I’m happy.
I was certainly happy with Claimed by Nicholai. It blew my mind! This was the sort of story you would expect to read from one of the big novelists, like Nora Roberts. I can honestly say it was my best read of the year so far.
Denna Holm’s tale is epic as we visit many worlds throughout the universe. I always thought science fiction stories were complicated, and aliens don’t live like we do. They do, they eat, sleep, read, dress, and love. They may look different, but they have feelings and emotions, too. The Raiden Warriors were extremely handsome men, and that’s a good start to any story!
Abby was snatched from earth and her disbelief at finding herself in a space ship was the reaction I would have had. Her slow burn relationship with Nicholai was interesting to watch develop, too. She was very angry at first, who wouldn’t be! We, as the reader, were privileged to his thoughts, so we already knew he was a good guy.
Claimed by Nicholai was one of those stories you literally lose yourself in, and I can’t express how much I enjoyed doing just that.
I'm always looking for a good alien romance some of them can be cheesy with no depth or way to much sex scenes and no real story but this was pretty good . The author played on some of are earthly myths. Abby was abducted by a alien for a mate bond but it took a travel through space and a almost death too make Abby ready for such a bond . The mate bond has been played a million times in alien romances and does get a little old. This story was well written but I was disappointed in the epilogue. I like a epilogue to be about the couple years later . I can't wait to read about the Dragon/serpent shape shifted in this book.
The story wasn't too bad. I accidentally read the second book in this series first. This book touches on a lot of heavy topics: abduction, rape, and slavery. Abbey felt a little immature at times but a little further in the book you find out she is only 19. So that explained much.
The book deals with one of the characters abducting a you adolescent girl and rapes her. He is dealt with. The one who did it isn't Nicolai the one that abducted Abby. He ends up redeeming himself towards the end.
Overall its a decent story. I'm going to have to reread the second book now that I got the back story.
Denna Holm was so seamless from beginning to end of this novel. I really liked this story she created, she made it seem like this could really happen. At times it was so emotional, I think she covered every emotion possible witthin this book,I really didn't want to reach the end but on the other hand i was turning pages like a mad women !I'm spool looking forward to the next book Denna Holm puts out I will be getting it! I think if you really love reading alien romance, paranormal, some action and a little territorial behaviour from hot so men.
The characters are compelling, and well written. Character details are descriptive enough that I could get a clear picture in my imagination of what they might look like. Dialog moved quickly enough I didn't get bored, was witty, and sometimes laugh out loud funny. I enjoyed the fact that Abby wasn't "struck" by insta-love, and the plot flowed smoothly through the stages of the relationship as it developed over time. There are plenty of unexpected and surprising twists that make it difficult to put this book down. I thought this was a fantastic book.
Abby is hiking with her dog when she is abducted by aliens. The Prince knows immediately that she is the woman for him! They are not supposed to be on Earth so they grab her and go! The plot sounded great but the delivery took a long time to get the whole story across. Plus, the heroine Abby, was at times frustrating to read. That is the reason for the 4 rather than a higher score.

Abby is a human who is abducted by Nicolai an alien prince from Raiden. Taken from her family and homeland, without a choice into an unknown alien world. Her strong will helps her cope and deal with the unusual circumstances. Very interesting and intriguing story.
This book is definitely unique. I enjoyed the attention to detail that the author took while creating another world and species. I loved Abby and her character. She is a deep woman

Nope...nope...the author couldn’t even make it past chapter 2 with out vulgar references to things. Thought the plot of the book was interesting, wanted to give benefit of doubt, but nope...chapter 3...boom...
This book has a unique perspective on old legends and stories. The interactions between these lovers was interesting ,exciting and romantic. I would recommend this book to anyone.
This is my first time reading a book by Denna Holm. I really enjoyed it. It’s a paranormal book that is very well written. I couldn’t wait to read her next book in this series.
