I thought I was ordinary Rory Franco: college student, artist, and over-protected daughter. Then mages barge into my family’s home, murder my parents, and whisk me off to a university known to the rest of magical society as Villain Academy.

It turns out I’m Persephone Bloodstone, the long lost heir to one of the five royal families of dark magic. I’m destined to learn how

RH books-especially those about magic or supernatural elements-are selling like hot cakes right now. If you’re an author with even a hint of talent and you write romance, chances are that you’ve tried to write an rh just because they sell, and that’s just the truth. It’s because of the abundance of books written in this trope that I feel I can critique them harsher, because at this point they are a dime a dozen (however i’m not saying this isn’t the same with other tropes as well, it’s just that ...more

Wasn't expecting a bully romance.

I wasn't expecting a bully romance. I generally don't like them. This book reaffirmed that for me. There,s definitely not a Hero in this book. The story was good I hated all the guys in this, but I loved the I loved Rory. She was strong and dedicated.
Hi, were you shocked by the villainous, cruel or bully aspects of this book? Here's a review for you that might help.

Zero spoilers ahead, but mild irritation might occur if you dislike sarcasm.

I rarely go through reviews after I've read a book and decided how I feel about it, but seeing the rating on Cruel Magic drop like a cow's tail within a few days, I decided to offer my two cents on the issue of 'cruelty/bully romance' in this book.

So, you were surprised or upset about the cruelty and vil

Fantastic Twist

I have to say that this book is definitely a different twist them most of the one I read though that is not a bad thing in any way. Rory grows up thinking she has no magic with parents that use not to fuel theirs. Then she is pretty much kidnapped after they kill her parents and taken to a school of people that get power from fear instead. Her journey from their is one big bully incident after another. I kept hoping she would power up to kick some butt but we have to wait for that

It's a good written book and I love Rory. But I hate everyone else, I can not take that everyone else in this book is so cruel.
I don't want to see her with any of the guys and I fantasize most that she'll kill them all.
Hate-love is one thing but this is just bully, and everyone just tries to push her down until she's nothing.

I like this book, but all of the bullying was a bit of an issue for me. It just seemed as if the entire book centered around this and there is a huge secret that we have yet to find out. Also she totally does some questionable things with a so called bully. Other than that, pretty good read.

So good....

Really loved the start to this new series. Go Rory! The guys are... well complete jerks is putting it mildly. They all have this warped sense of self & morality due to world they were raised in. Declan has others to protect so he justifies his passivity with that, Jude & Malcolm have abominable parents & Connor - I thought he was maybe the one with some redeeming qualities but his sense of loyalty keeps him from doing what's right. Honestly he moved to the bottom of the pa

Eva Chase’s Royals of Villain Academy 1: Cruel Magic is a true treat, and the start of something really special. Read the publisher’s blurb on this one as it pretty much tells you what you need to know. I can guarantee that if you find it even slightly appealing you will love this book. Frankly it’s the birth of a new addiction for me. The lead here, Rory Franco, may in fact be Persephone Bloodstone, the long lost heir to one of the five royal families of dark magic, but this touch gal knows wha ...more

I liked it but had to push to finish. I like Rory, but the guys are pissing me off a bit. I'm hoping that they get better later.

I'm looking forward to what Rory will do next... Happily the next book isn't so far behind... YAY!

The eventual heroes in this book are absolutely heinous. I have no idea how the author is going to make the readers root for them in future books. I’ll be interested to see how it plays out though.

It feels like a fire has been lit under Chase with her recent releases. From taking a trip into Moriarty's diabolical mind to this new world with Rory, she's been knocking it out of the park.

Rory's newly discovered world of magic- of fearmancers and joymancers- is an intriguing twist on a well-loved foundation: a magical academy where students learn how to master their craft in the midst of social politics, family drama, and raging hormones.

With power that comes from the creation and stimulati

A RH so bad I was hoping these guys are not love interest

Ugh. Well I hated this book, I even came to hate the storyline? Where is this going? We find Rory who is raised by joymaycers who do magic with the joy and happiness of others, then bam they are killed by fearmaycers, well you get what the wield magic from. It's hard watching Rory just go, deal with crap, it's frustrating and I was yelling at my kindle hoping that Rory grew a pair. She doesn't have power to fight off the bullies at school

i really wanted to like this book, cuz i enjoyed reading filthy rich boys series by cm stunich which is also a bully romance rh book. But no i got very disappointed sadly :( I think Chase should make some chances in the book with the story line and characters. I have really liked Chase previous books that i have read by her so i expected more
i got fucking pissed when they bullied her and was mean to her, i mean yeah i get the fact that you are new n shit but please get a backbone bit
This was so interesting! I really enjoyed learning about the magic of the fearmancers. I can't wait to see Rory grow more! I'm curious about the overall system of the barons, and their role in this magic society. Of the four scions, I liked Connar the best. Declan I like less than Jude, actually. I want to get more of Malcolm's perspective. At this point, although there've been a few romantic encounters (kissing and sex) between Rory and two of the four (separately) I'm not really comfortable wi ...more

I’ve been tricked!

It’s a paranormal academy bully romance! This books was great. Awesome character and world building. But, I just don’t like bully romances. That said, I will definitely read the next to see what Rory does next.

College student Rory Franco's life completely changes when mages barge into the family home, murder her parents and then take her to a university known as Villain Academy. It appears her real name is Persephone Bloodstone a missing heir to one of the five dark magic families and her place is to be a scion to stand next to 4 arrogant (but very hot) men who rule the school. However, Rory has double trouble - she can't locate her wicked skills as she doesn't want to feed on other people's pain and ...more

Note: I received this book from the author and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.

It is no secret that lately I have been loving the paranoraml reverse harem (whychoose) genre. I have read all kinds, instalove, fated mates, hate to love and maybe even more that I can't think of right now. Each have their own appeal but I will admit that I have read that many hate to love rh and I have so-so feelings about them. Since Eva is one of my favorite reverse harem authors, I love he

I received an advance copy from the author.

Well, I must say I was pleasantly surprised with how this book turned out. For a while now I’ve been really sick of reverse harem because it’s just so overdone and it all sort of felt the same. It’s kind of at the point where it would take a really, really, REALLY enticing premise for me to even consider reading it. But that’s what Cruel Magic did. I’ve been a fan of Eva Chase’s work in the past, I know that her writing is consistent and she’s really go

Bully and academy romances are all the rage right now, filling Amazon page after Amazon page of recommendations. While this little gem may fit snuggly into that saturated genre, it stands apart and shines on its own by offering an incredibly intriguing story, fantastic characters and a whole new world I can't help but want to explore more.

It is also the kind of 'bully romance' I really CAN read. Many of the offerings on the market today are cruel for cruel's sake, setting men against women in si

This first book of a new series is one of those kind you both love and hate. Well, actually I hated it at first because it starts out really dark but I was loving it by the end. I can't wait to find out what happens to Rory in the next books. She is a kick butt heroine who will come into her own as the series progresses.

Rory believes she is living a perfectly normal life with loving parents, even if they are mages, who adopted her as a small child and her own place, even if it was her parent's b

When nineteen year old Rory began her day she was trying to convince her beloved parents to allow her to get her own place. After years of homeschooling she yearned for some independence. Little did she know how her life was drastically going to change. By the end of the day her parents were no more and she was kidnapped and whisked off to a school dubbed Villain Academy. I hate bully romances but love this author's works, so I gave it a shot. It's a good read, I love Rory and her ability to stick to her morals. She has a real backbone and you really want to cheer for her every success and hope she can shake the system.

The world building is interesting, it's a take on magic that I find fascinating and unique. (view spoiler)

What a great start to a new series!!

Rory was such a fantastic character - despite being a little sheltered and homeschooled her whole life, she isn't a spoiled FMC and is actually quite mature when not getting her way. Rory is thrust into the unknown, but she is a strong female that stands up for what she believes in, who wants to help others and do what's right.

Unfortunately for Rory, she is thrust into is a school where she is the missing heir of one of the 5 ruling families - the other 4 heir

Wow! Once again Eva has created a world that piqued my interest and ensnared my senses! I love Rory's strength and conviction to stay true to herself even while trying to learn her place and find her way in a new world to the one she was raised. And the guys? Love to hate each of these gorgeous, full of themselves, fearmancers! While Malcolm and Jude are the obvious ones to dislike, and Declan needs a spine... I find myself feeling most disappointed in, and hurt by Connar.

Buckle up and prepare yourself for this high intensity read! It's emotional and frightening. Rory's difficulties may just break your heart. She's one sweet girl caught up amidst a world that just doesn't make sense to her. Her priorities shift majorly. The guys in this play their parts perfectly! They are so beautifully broken, but what would you expect from the scions of Villian Academy? They each are driven to ruthlessly succeed. There is something about each one that makes you want to unravel ...more

Disappointment in cruel magic book 1

This book took FOREVER to move along. I seriously mean forever. And after awhile it started feeling like a chore to get through. The characters have a decent amount of depth but the main male character is such a jerk it’s just so unattractive. The female lead is so darn pathetic, she’s got these brief, and I mean shooting star brief moments, of some awesomeness that it is so hard to choke this book down to see if she’s just plateauing. The premise of this book
