Carol Marinelli was born in England to Scottish parents, then emigrated to Australia, where there are loads of Scottish and English people who did exactly the same, so she’s very at home there.

She lives in the outer suburbs of Melbourne—pretty much in her car, driving her three children to their various commitments.

Carol writes for the Harlequin Presents and Medical lines and she also writes contemporary women's fiction (with a dark twist).
When she's not writing she's reading, when she's not reading she's writing.

3 stars — Well bummer. This one was actually going a bit better. It had its flaws, but I was leaning towards 3.5 rounded up, maybe even 4 stars. And then it went downhill at the end. Boo. Ah well.

So here’s the thing. The blurb does not give a great introduction to this book. For one: when the book starts, and when our MCs meet, Harriet is married. I mean, sure, her marriage is basically over, but it’s been so long since I first read it, I completely forgot and was thrown. It was a bit uncomfortable, but it didn’t cross my cheating boundaries (which is a button issue with me). And besides all that, the baby stuff? Happens way at the end. It sounds like it’s going to be this big part of the plot, and while it was part of what tanked the book for me, it really didn’t happen until the end. I don’t know why I’m explaining all this, I just hate when blurbs are misleading.

ANYWAYS. So at first I appreciated Harriet. She’s dealing with some complicated stuff right from the start of the book, but I could feel how dedicated she was to her job, and I admired her as a nurse. She rubbed me wrong with her stubbornness about her own health, and how hypocritical she was about that, but it was a flaw I could forgive — made her more human, you know? BUT. But. Her stubbornness and hardheadedness just ramped up until I couldn’t take it anymore and lost my respect. She was so wrapped up in her own head, she made assumptions left right and center, and ultimately tanked her relationship with Ciro. If it had just happened once or twice and she learned from it, I probably would feel a little differently. But it ultimately led to her initially choosing to keep her pregnancy a secret for NO REASONABLE REASON, and I was done.

Ciro was pretty solid. The problem, inevitably, is that we didn’t get ANYTHING from his POV. Which, I always prefer dual POV. I don’t know if that was to further the miscommunication plot, but it was a shame. I could tell that he was being misunderstood though, and I was sad about that. He had his moments of jumping to conclusions, but in general he was a hero I could root for.

The one other thing I really enjoyed about this story were the moments in the ER where they were working together to help someone. There were sort of 3 separate stories, and I was kind of hooked in those moments.

Welp, at least I can get rid of this book too! But I’m glad I’ve got some other books to read before I try another book by Ms. Marinelli. I could see what drew me to her books 15 years ago, but I’m not sure my tolerance for the rest is high enough.

Adult romance novels are a guilty pleasure of mine. I now that there are problems with some of them and that most contain love at first sight (which I usually hate), but there's just something about these novels that is so addicting. Although this one felt pretty different from other adult romance novels that I've read, since this book did not have many of those problems.

Most of the synopsis is very different than what was in the book, but despite that, I don't regret it, I actually enjoyed the book. Although it was mostly about working in the hospital emergency department. The synopsis makes it sound like Ciro (hero) finds out that Harriett (heroine) is pregnant on his own, but she ends up telling him herself.

This book is pretty different from other Harlequin Presents novels I've read. There's no, "I fell in love with you the moment I saw you," despite what those two said, I don't believe it because Harriett didn't keep thinking about gorgeous and perfect Ciro is most of the time like the main characters in other romance novels, she actually has other things on her mind throughout the beginning of the book. They also talked and got to know each other for at least a week before they even kissed, let alone had sex. So that was really surprising.

It started off as a serious passionate 4-5 star affair. But somewhere in the middle the author lost the momentum and the story became rather superficial and impractically light.

The guy is every woman's dream come true, both wet and dry. Sensitive doctor, great listener, friend in need and a gorgeous hot hunk. It can't get better than this !!!

The girl is a nurse, struggling out of a failed marriage. The doctor pulls her out of her misery and helps her rebuild her life. Of course, in this process, they start to have a physical relationship as well.

For 2 people who communicate so well in the start, the sudden misunderstanding and lack of sharing seems out of place.

The guy is crazy about her, but she thinks he is just treating her as a passing fling. And the pregnant part happens only in the end. But by then the story degenerates into a non-serious , meaningless conflict between them.

In his farewell party, she turns up and he declares that he would do anything to hold on to her. And the breaker of hearts among the entire nursing staff finally settles for one.

There is an epilogue of her delivery, again too breezy. Serious stuff turning into a light hearted affair. Not bad but it dint live up to promise.

The best thing about this book is the cute guy on the original Mills & Boon cover. The generic US cover has the MCs on a beach in front of a coconut palm. Coconuts don't grow in Sydney. The blurb is also misleading. Harriet doesn't learn she's pregnant til late in the book & she's the one who tells Ciro.

The story is told entirely from Harriet's POV but that was often the case 20 years ago. She's getting over a failed marriage. Ciro is the new temp ED doctor at her hospital. They become friends & he helps her to feel better about herself. They're attracted but she knows any relationship will end when he leaves Australia. They become lovers, he falls for her but she thinks he only regards her as a fling because he's on a temporary visa. Their previous easy communication ceases, mainly because Harriet is self-centred, pig-headed & makes assumptions about Ciro.

The story starts out OK but becomes annoying. Did not keep.
