This story can make you furious, but the way it is written is great. It tells the tragic story of a beautiful Sofka, who marries a twelve-year-old boy to save her family from financial ruin and the life in southern Serbia after the liberation from the centuries-long Ottoman rule in 1875.

Nazalost, vecita borba izmedju ugadjanja okolini ili sopstvenim potrebama,u ovom delu svakako ostavlja traga.Sofka, neduzna devojka, polako propada, kao i srpsko aristokratsko drustvo, polako smenjivano prostim seljacima.na genijalan nacin opisano.zadivljujuce!

I am baffled by the discrepancy between my understanding of this book and that of just about everybody else who has reviewed it here. How is it that my read is so different from everyone else's?

My synopsis:
It's about Sofka, a lovely young woman of a good family that has fallen on hard times apparently because of the irresponsible behaviour of her father and grandfather. She's intelligent and quick to size up a situation, but seems only concerned with her looks and clothes and the impression she

If this book is translated in English, it should be read by you immediately, because it is not one of the best books, but THE best book I have ever read.

I finished this book yesterday night. For one more time Balkan and especially Serbian literature didn't disappoint me. Well, it is not one of the best Serbian books I have read so far, but still, I think it's a pretty good book that didn't tire me at all. Like almost all books I have read and coming from the neighbor countries,in this one as well its language seemed to me very familiar and its topic pretty interesting. It focuses in social life of women in general and the plot takes place in sou ...more

Odlicna knjiga koja verno oslikava mentalitet i obicaje tadasnje Srbije. Osim verno docarane slike zivota mlade, lepe, ponosne Srpkinje, knjiga nam prica i o njenom teskom zivotu posle udaje.

Odlicno djelo.
