All children need to develop efficient and effective strategies for decoding unknown words. Teachers need to facilitate this development. "Kid Writing" offers a full description of the sorts of instruction and experiences that have proven successful in the promoting of powerful decoding skills.
I love the positivity that this team if scholars and educators place around early childhood writing. I have been implementing their practices for the last 5 months and have seen spectacular growth with young and/or struggling students in grades k-2. I was surprised at how the students did at first with writing and how quickly their writing and reading abilities grow.
In working with 2nd graders who struggle, I was surprised to see how much shame they connect with when writing. How they began helpless, afraid, and with disgust at the very idea of writing. In gaining their trust, they look forward to our writing time together and have a renewed confidence in themselves and their ability to grow and learn as students.
This is a great way to teach young children how to write so that they can learn to read. It shows how to teach some early spelling concepts and how to incorporate writing all day long. Early elementary teachers will find this book an invaluable resource.
LOVE this book - I started incorporating a lot of what I read about in this book and my kindergarteners are learning by leaps and bounds. Highly recommend!!
