After five hundred and two years of living UP on top of an ancient cathedral in the middle of a metropolitan city, Garry The Gargoyle decides it’s time to explore the world of DOWN. But being DOWN instead of UP isn’t what Garry imagined it would be! The bustling town of Shamlaigh is full of harrowing challenges, including encountering a giant pony-dog and scary bug people. Eventually Garry finds refuge in the Garden of Friends, where his enchanting tales of times long ago come to life.
Karin Vardaman has created a fun family read that has the power of creating a strong family bond. The story revolves around the life of a gargoyle who suddenly became tired of living up in the cathedral. Garry the Gargoyle finally decides to explore the downsides of the city, hence the title upside-down. Karin found a way of making this novel very interesting for both children and adults. It is no doubt that she aimed at creating a novel for kids to relate with. I guess we got much more. The whole family enjoyed this novel. Garry had a really mixed experience down there. He figured out that things are not exactly how they look from the upside. He had a lot to learn and a lot to deal with. Honestly, this is the kind of book I will recommend for families to read together. There are a lot of things within that they can all discuss together. I love the story and my kids also were very excited about reading this story. I certainly think you should place an order for this book right away and have fun reading with your family.
Look no further for a fun, wickedly smart children's book for bed time, car rides or any free time. Karin Vardaman has written this fun adventure for intermediate readers about Garry the Gargoyle leaving his UP world to explore the DOWN. Page after page filled with gorgeous, vividly detailed illustrations by Paisley Hansen, Garry's Upside Down Adventure is sure to grab the attention of even those young ones who are most determined to not enjoy reading a book.
The glossary at the back of the book is a brilliant feature for this reading level, when vocabulary can expand so quickly and easily with little more than exposure. I don't know where Vardaman and Hansen met but together, they have created a world and characters that are perfectly ripe for a series every bit as successful as Llama Llama or Pete the Cat. My own kids are too old for this but I have 2 nieces who are going to LOVE Garry!
Garry’s Upside Down Adventures comes with the whole package: it is a children’s book with full page amazing drawings, full colour illustrations plus an educational story.
The story is so well written that it is not hard for children to love the sympathetic main character, Garry the Gargoyle.
Garry has never been in the real world, so when he decides to leave the cathedral which was his home, he encounters an unimaginable, daunting reality. Luckily, he meets valuable friends with whom he forges a life-long relationship.
With a little help from his friends, Garry learns, and teaches us, to walk through the ups and downs of life.
This book is not only cute but also entertaining. It came to be a worthy addition to my e-reader.
I was looking for something fun to read to my nephews and I came across this title and ended up being a great humorous piece of literature. Usually, when I read children’s books for kids in my family, I, as ana adult, get bored, but the author has done an amazing job crafting a storyline which is entertaining and fun to read and to listen to. What I highlight about the plot is the fact that through Gary’s adventures, children can get to learn from life itself. Garry is a Gargoyle who has lived all his life at a Cathedral and he finally decides to leave that place and encounters a totally different reality; a complete new world was awaiting. I loved this book and the lesson it teaches us all.
What a lovely, colourful and fun book! It is a wonderful story about a sympathetic gargoyle called Garry who lives in an ancient cathedral. One day, he decides to leave his home and to know the “real world”, but the reality is very different from what he imagined it would be. Some things look scary and dangerous. Fortunately, he meets new friends with whom he builds a great friendship. Everything about this book is amazing! The pictures are really vivid and beautiful which catch the kids’ attention as soon as they open it. The plot is so interesting and educational that gets them thinking about making new friends despite the differences between them. I would recommend it!
I read to my kids every night and this book specifically was enjoyable to read because I got to teach them a lot of new things. They know what a gargoyle is now. The illustrations are so great and my kids spent awhile staring at them after the book was done. Really convenient little glossary towards the end so we could explain what some of the words meant too. Cute all around!
