"This compelling legal drama, social satire, and satisfying, cautionary tale will remind you why you love to read."
—Dallas Jewish Monthly

The Best People pushes the buttons of legal process and personal lives in a way that will delight fans of courtroom procedurals.
—D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

Paddy Moran, a former cop from Brooklyn, is a newly licensed attorney in Houston with dreams and aspirations to make it big. He survives early rough bumps and ethical challenges. Then, through networking, he lands two high-profile clients. With his brash moxie and brilliant legal strategy, he gets outstanding outcomes that put him on the success trajectory to the upper echelons of the city's divorce bar. But, faced with difficult choices in high-stakes litigation, will he balance his thirst for recognition and respect with his sense of right and wrong?

The Best People also follows Pilar Galt, a sensuous, intelligent single mother from the Houston barrios, for whom a temp assignment evolves into a relationship with the richest man in town. Her path intersects with Paddy's and eventually converges with his during a pivotal time in her life when she must overcome self-destructive tendencies to survive.

A legal drama and social satire set after Enron and before the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, The Best People portrays a Houston as it is: a glitzy meritocracy populated with larger-than-life characters. It is the landscape where the country-club and café-society sets clash amidst clever legal maneuvering, big law firm politics, a Ponzi scheme, and judicial corruption.

More than 30 years ago Tom Wolfe published Bonfire of the Vanities, a magnificent satire of the chicanery of the rich and poor in New Year City. Marc Grossberg has brought a similar acumen to his home city of Houston, Texas. [...] Grossberg is superb in his understanding of the legal process and its temptations. I rarely have read a novel with such insights into how the legal system works—or sometimes doesn’t work.

The Best People is such a unique book! Paddy Moran is a former cop, now attorney, living in Houston. He quickly learns that his happiness will be a balancing act between success and recognition versus his morals.

Also highlighted in The Best People is Pilar Gale, a single mom, who eventually crosses paths with Paddy.

I found Houston to be such a fun setting. I’m not sure I’ve read another book set there, and especially a contemporary story. The Best People exposes the social scene in a satirical way. Overall, I found this story entertaining, salacious, engaging, and insightful. Legal drama fans will be thrilled with this one.

I received a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

Although this is Marc Grossberg's first book, his considerable work and thought ("100 drafts" he said in the signing I attended) puts this Houston-based legal thriller in the top rank of entertainment.

Grossberg, a tax lawyer by training and trade, does slip in an accurate, interesting tax shelter sub-plot but considerately subsumes it in the much larger, fascinating character of slick Norma and her "financial planning" firm.

"The Best People" refers to the moneyed elite of Houston and Grossberg both slyly references and frankly dissects that particular culture, making it an especially delicious, gossipy read for anyone who knows the city.

Moreover, his portrayals of successful newcomers (VJ, Paddy, and Pilar (by lifestyle)) will ring true to readers in all cities.

His main male character, Paddy, is a winner, a flawed cop-turned-lawyer. Veteran readers will enjoy the way Paddy's character arc through the book is more boomerang than gentle slope--with satisfyingly sophisticated plotting turns.

Here and there dialogue morphs into too-long monologue, yet throughout the novel Grossberg keeps our interest in the characters and has us rooting for (almost) all of them.

Highly-recommended, especially to Texans, anyone who knows Houston, and readers who like domestic suspense.

The Best People tells the story of Patrick "Paddy" Moran, a former Brooklyn and Houston police officer turned lawyer. Starting out with small divorce cases for his friends and former co-workers on the police force, Paddy begins to learn the ins and outs of law as he encounters his fair share of questionable and controversial cases, embarrassing moments, and even some big wins along the way.

As Paddy gains more confidence, experience, and success, his hunger for more becomes insatiable. Partnering with Will Marshall, readers begin to see a different side to Paddy. Though capable of empathy and kindness, and armed with a moral compass, Paddy is not above doing some underhanded things to get more money and acclaim. From really disliking Paddy to recognizing that, underneath it all, he's not a bad guy, Grossberg creates a main character readers can both love and hate.

Though this novel largely focuses on Paddy, I really loved the cast of supporting characters, as well. Reading about Pilar, VJ Simon, Margot Shear, and Estelle Cook, I couldn't help but like the many people Paddy interacts with. Grossberg does a great job of creating developed, interesting characters that really draw characters in, and I felt for and came to like many of them.

As someone who's been interested in the law field, this book really gave me an eye-opening glimpse of what some new lawyers face when first starting out. Though fictional and satirical, the world Grossberg creates draws readers in and engages them, and I found myself unable to put this book down as I got further into the story. I truly enjoyed this story and highly recommend it!

This book was completely addicting and tells the tale of one man’s journey from the bottom of Houston’s social scene, to the very top of the “Best People.” Paddy, a Brooklyn-born former police officer with Houston PD, finishes law school and begins to take on his first cases. With humble office space and zero clients, he makes his mark helping former cops with divorces and personal injury cases. As the favorable settlements begin to accumulate, Paddy acquires higher profile clients and a place among the Houston social scene.

In a parallel storyline, Pillar is woman desperate to escape her abusive relationship and create a better life for herself and her daughter. Taking advice from a mutual friend, Pillar seeks Paddy’s advice and counsel about leaving her husband. Pillar is granted her divorce and later, while working as a secretary in temp job, meets and marries VJ, a multi-million dollar businessman who introduces Pillar to a life she’s only dreamed about.

With both Paddy and Pillar soaring within the Houston social scene, there’s only one thing that can ruin everything, ambivalence and greed. Who will take things too far and end up losing everything in the process?

I absolutely loved this book and was completely engaged with the characters. While Paddy wasn’t the most ethical of lawyers, I found myself cheering for him until the very end. The writing was superb and I’d definitely read another book by Marc Grossberg. If you want to take a journey up and down the social ladder, check out The Best People!

Every profession has its share of "rotten apples," and the world of lawyers is certainly not immune. These are characters that may not precisely cross the line of unlawfulness, nonetheless, they think very little of committing shady acts that are unethical. Lying, bullying, and manipulation become their method of operation. Every so often, however, they venture too far, and the consequences are catastrophic and devastating.

Marc Grossberg sets his debut novel, The Best People: A Tale of Trials and Errors in Houston, Texas where his central character, a thirty-six-year-old former cop and now an attorney, Paddy Moran has just been admitted to the Texas bar. To describe Paddy as a hustler would be an understatement. He believes that moving to Houston from Brooklyn was the right choice to set up a practice where he felt that he could make it big and where people who came with nothing can eventually become heavy-hitters. And that was his goal.

Paddy's first client, a former police colleague of his and his best friend, Jed, contacts him seeking legal advice following his wife's filing for divorce. He has also been kicked out of their home. Jed has not been a "good boy" and was caught fooling around with another woman.

After explaining to Jed the legal implications of a divorce and the possible claims his wife has over him, Paddy agrees to take on Jed's case without charging him other than his court costs and out-of-pocket expenses. Overcome with emotion, Jed thanks Paddy and promises to refer his police colleagues to him when they require legal assistance.

The first of Paddy's referrals turns out to be a godsend and a catalyst in moving Paddy's law practice forward. It doesn't take long for Paddy to accumulate at least three police divorce cases a month. All were uncontested and completed with a fixed fee. Not too bad for someone just starting out in practise.

In one instance, however, Paddy refuses to take on a case that involves a cop's wife, Pillar Galt, who had been roughed up by her husband, Ronnie. Paddy explains to Pillar that it wouldn't be in his best interests to entangle himself with a cop as he makes his living from taking on divorce cases from them, which, as he states in his Brooklyn accent, his "bread and buttah." He does refer her to another attorney. As we will learn, this will not be the last time that Paddy will bump into Pillar, which proves to be quite an interesting saga as it affects their respective lives in more ways than one.

Before long Paddy is off and running to becoming a hot-shot attorney in Houston, initially within the police community, and ultimately weaving its way into the broader community particularly among the well-to-do movers and shakers.

One such member that helps him break into this exclusive club is Margo Shear, who contacted Paddy, after being referred to him by Jed. Margo was the victim of serious carelessness on the part of a physician who neglected to follow instructions concerning her medical history when she was admitted to his hospital. With Paddy's intervention, Margo was able to attain a substantial settlement when both the physician and hospital were sued by Paddy. After his success with Margot's case, the word got out that Paddy was the "go to" attorney when you needed someone who was a street fighter and not afraid to take on anyone including attorneys from "white shoe" law firms.

Along the way to his fame and fortune, Paddy hooks up with another lawyer, Will Marshall, whose pedigree, temperament and style, is the complete opposite of his. Yet, Will loved money, and his partnership with Paddy enabled him to enjoy a lifestyle which both he and his wife believed were entitled.

Slowly tantalizing, this well-crafted debut novel transports readers into fascinating excursions in the rough and tumble world of trial litigation, particularly divorce lawsuits where the stakes can be very high. Lawyers practicing this branch of law sometimes require expertise in areas they don't teach you in law school. They not only must know their law but also be very creative. They will stop at nothing and take no prisoners. What counts is winning at any cost. However, when greed becomes reckless, and creativity becomes crooked, we have a problem.

Practicing law for over fifty years in his native Houston, Grossberg, who describes himself as "an observer and listener," confirms a golden ear for capturing the tones of the nasty culture that engulfs some law firms. His writing is spare and intense, and like flowing water, the novel keeps moving with a story that is entertaining but at the same time troublesome. As for the principal character, Paddy here we have someone who is at times unprincipled, yet you have to admit that he does "make things" happen with his crafty schemes.

(Thank you to Suzy Approved Book Tours, Greenleaf Book Group Press and Marc Grossberg for this gifted book!)

The Best People: A Tale of Trials and Errors was a PAGE TURNER!! For fans of any court room drama, this is a great recommendation!

Following Paddy Moran, a former police officer and new Houston attorney. Starting out small and working his way up - Paddy gets big fast, and starts earning the big bucks. He’s faced with many decisions - mostly money or morals. Will he do the right thing, or what gives the highest pay out?

Parallel to Paddy’s story, we follow Pillar - single mom exiting an abusive marriage. Pillar and Paddy cross paths by mutual friends (Paddy is recommended to Pillar as a divorce attorney). Pillar eventually meets and gets involved with VJ, millionaire who is highly involved in Houstons social scene. Also known as “The Best People”.

SO many things, and SO many characters in this book - and I LOVED them all. I don’t even know where to begin when describing the events and the wild ride this novel took me on.

I felt like this could have been real lives and real stories - maybe even true crime?

If the words, legal maneuvering, Ponzi scheme and judicial corruption peak your interest - GRAB this book FAST!

I can’t wait to see what else Marc Grossberg writes!

Paddy is just starting out as a lawyer in Houston. He is struggling to make ends meet. Then he lucks up on his first case, which just so happens, leads to his second case. And so on and so forth. As things start to change for the better so does Paddy's attitude. He tends to get more greedy and more competitive.
Paddy is such a great character. He is hardworking and has a strong ambition. He starts out as the underdog. As a reader, you want him to succeed and keep it that way. But when things start going great for Paddy, he changes. His greed gets out of hand. He makes terrible and tragic decisions.
It has been a while since I have read a legal thriller. So, this book hit the spot. I enjoyed the way the author tied all the different legal problems into one common denominator...Paddy. Paddy is an enjoyable character all the way through, even when his decision making skills fall apart!
Need a quick, good thriller. This is it!

I liked Paddy at first. Even though he was starting at the bottom of the ladder, he still had his ethics. He knew right vs wrong. He helped his fellow police officers with divorce and personal injury cases, but it wasn’t enough. Small time cases are not going to help him climb that ladder. Paddy is ambitious and he knows he will eventually rise, but he wants to rise faster!

That quickly changed as soon as he wins a few high profile cases. One of those high profile clients is in with the rich and powerful. She helps spread Paddy’s name around, and it catches like wildfire. Now Paddy is climbing that ladder faster than he ever dreamed! However, this type of fame comes with a price.

Pilar is trying to be the best single mom she can be. She gets herself out of an abusive marriage with Paddy’s help. Shortly after, she lands a temp job in the office of VJ Simmons. Pilar knows the name because he is a legend in the business world. You know where this is going. If you guessed that she would fall in love with a married man, you would be correct. How could she not? He was everything her ex wasn’t. Except Pilar will surprise you in this relationship. She’s no dummy, and her daughter is always priority #1! I was impressed with her character right up to the very end.

I like how the story brings Paddy and Pilar together. Except one will take the other one down. Who will it be? Who will end up on the same side as The Best People?

To say this book is addicting is an understatement! Your introduced to Paddy whose from Brooklyn but is a former Houston police officer . He just finished law school and is just beginning to take on some clients. Former cops with divorces and personal injury cases. As he begins to win some cases he gets the opportunity to take some higher profile cases and getting a taste of the Houston Social Scene. In the alternating story line you meet Pillar whose desperate to leave her abusive relationship and she just wants a better life for her and her daughter. When she is finally granted her divorce with the help of paddy, she’s able to gets herself a temp secretary. She meets a multi millionaire businessman and ends up marrying him. Pillar is stepping into a life she only dreamed of and it’s social scene that comes with it. Paddy and Pillar are now getting their names out in the Houston Social scene. This dives into what can bring someone down when you finally get what you want, especially when greed is involved. Who will lose everything in the process? The writing was amazing and kept my attention and I found myself engrossed in the characters lives. I give this four stars!

In this captivating novel we have Paddy Moran, an ex-cop turned newly licensed divorce lawyer and Pilar Galt, a woman from humble beginnings in need of a divorce from an abusive husband. With a diverse cast of supporting characters, all wonderfully developed, we follow the highs and lows of Paddy and Pilar's journey to become part of the crowd known as The Best People. It's primarily a tale of morality and the consequences from the choices they make navigating in the world of the rich and famous. The author does a great job of making you feel for the characters in both good times and bad, with an easy going writing style. Fast-paced and entertaining, I felt totally invested from start to finish. I highly recommend this one!

I don’t think I’ve ever used the word tantalizing but there’s always a first time for everything. This book was tantalizing! So much going on! The greed and ambition in this book was addicting. Sort of like watching an American Greed episode. I can’t say I loved Paddy because let’s face it, he wasn’t a great moral character but it was impossible not to root for him. I enjoyed seeing as he climbed the social ladder and was hooked on the drama. Pillar was another character who was featured, but I didn’t care too much for her. Paddy’s life was much more salacious.

The Best People by Marc Grossberg was a fascinating book about high society Houston. If you like drama and cultural commentary this book is for you. If you are a fan of the tv show Suits, there were many parallels.

The Best People follows the story of Paddy Moran, a cop turned high powered divorce lawyer. And Pilar Galt, a woman seek a divorce who later ends up marrying into major money. Both Paddy and Pilar have moved up the social ladder, but with that comes great opportunity to fall. Will they rise above the challenges?? Grossberg brings Houston to life with well written side characters.

Thank you to the publisher and Suzy’s Book Tours for the opportunity to read this book!

Marc Grossberg, Author of "The Best People:  A Tale of Trial and Errors has written an intriguing, entertaining, intense, dramatic, witty and captivating story. The Genres for this novel are Satire, Fiction, Legal Fiction, Legal Drama, and Humor. The story takes place in Houston Texas, and the timeline is in the author's present and goes to the past when it pertains to the characters and events. The author describes his colorful cast of dramatic characters as complex and complicated.

Paddy Moran is a former police officer from Brooklyn, who has just passed the bar and is ready to set up practicing law.  One of the first people that Paddy helps is a fellow police officer who needs a divorce. Before long, word passes out that Paddy is the "guy" you should go to, especially if you need a divorce. I thought Paddy's first time in court, was very witty. Paddy does have some ups and downs but is noticing the " big-time law firms and the way the attorneys dress and act. Is it possible that Paddy is hungry for more at any cost?

Pilar Galt comes from humble roots and had lived in the Houston Barios. She is intelligent and beautiful and is having marital problems. Pilar needs a divorce from an abusive husband and has a young child to take care of. Paddy gives Pilar the name of a woman attorney who helps her with her divorce.  While Pilar is working temporary jobs, she meets a very wealthy man.

I appreciate that Marc Grossberg writes about the differences in wealth and poverty, power struggles, betrayals, what is legal and what is not legal, and gray areas in the law. Who truly are the best people? Are they the ones who know how to beat the system, or are they the ones that follow the law? Will justice be served? Does justice concern what is right or wrong?

There are twists and turns, revenge, rewards, and consequences. The author describes the choices that the characters are offered, and what they choose. This is a witty and thought-provoking story. In many ways, it is a spoof on the political, and judicial system. I would highly recommend this entertaining and intense novel.

Such a page-turner! I could not put this book down, and when I did I was still thinking about it. This is a great social satire about the hierarchy in Houston with legal drama and other gray-area actions. All the characters are so REAL because they are all flawed. Very highly recommend!

This book is a page turner. The main character, Paddy Moran, is a guy you'd love to hate. Having Paddy for a friend is like holding a lit firecracker, you know something is going to happen and it probably isn't going to be good. The story has many twists and is filled with interesting and colorful characters. I enjoyed all the references to the landmarks and culture of Houston. The ending was very satisfying. Paddy sums up the story and his character when he says, "I had a good run. I made some bad decisions. I got caught. End of story."

A very interesting read.

Former cop, now lawyer, opens up a firm. He gets a formerly rich kid, to be his partner. They handle family law; i.e. divorces of the rich and famous. They get in over their heads, forget the ethics. All sorts of consequences happen as a result.

The Best People: A Tale of Trials and Errors is a legal drama novel by Marc Grossberg. The novel follows Paddy Moran, a newly licensed attorney in Houston, Texas, as he struggles to make a name for himself in the cutthroat world of law. Paddy is a hustler with big dreams, but he is also willing to bend the rules to get ahead. As he climbs the ladder of success, Paddy is forced to make difficult choices that will ultimately define him as a lawyer and a person.

The novel is set in Houston, a city that is both a glitzy meritocracy and a place where corruption is rampant. The characters in the novel are all larger-than-life, and they represent the different sides of Houston's legal community. There are the ethical lawyers who are dedicated to justice, the corrupt lawyers who will do anything to win, and the ambitious lawyers who are willing to cross the line between right and wrong.

In this fast-paced and suspenseful journey, "The Best People" artfully explores the darker side of the legal profession. The story is a thought-provoking meditation on ambition, corruption, and the choices individuals make in the relentless pursuit of success.

Grossberg's compelling prose keeps readers engrossed, providing a glimpse into the trials and tribulations faced by those who walk the high-stakes tightrope of the legal world. The novel stands as a testament to Grossberg's writing prowess, as he deftly breathes life into his characters, making them relatable and believable. The entwining plotlines create a palpable tension, driving readers to turn pages eagerly, captivated by the intrigue. Throughout the journey, the novel raises profound questions, forcing readers to introspect about the ethical complexities that lawyers confront daily and the intricate interplay between ambition and moral integrity.

I would recommend The Best People to anyone who is interested in a suspenseful and thought-provoking read.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

I gave The Best People: A Tale of Trials and Errors a rating of 4 out of 5 stars because I enjoyed the novel overall. I found the characters to be believable and the plot to be suspenseful. I also thought that the novel raised some interesting questions about the ethics of the legal profession and the nature of ambition.

The motives I didn't give 5 stars are:

I did have a some minor quibbles with the novel. For example, I thought that the ending was a bit rushed. I also thought that the novel could have benefited from a bit more character development.

Overall, I enjoyed The Best People: A Tale of Trials and Errors by Marc Grossberg and I would recommend it to fans of thrillers.

Read my full review here: https://mimi-cyberlibrarian.blogspot....

I love all the places I get to visit from my easy chair when I read novels. This week I got to visit Houston, for better and for worse through The Best People. This is the Houston of legal maneuvering and judicial corruption in the early 2000s. It is the Houston of wealth and the country club, and many fascinating characters. It is the Houston of one really interesting restaurant named Eleganté, which would be fabulous to visit someday (if it were real).

Paddy Moran is the main protagonist. He is a former cop and a newly-minted lawyer who comes to Houston to make it big. He carefully watches the big-time lawyers as he makes his way connecting to the right people at the right times. It is obvious from the outset that his ambition is going to get the best of his morality.

A second narrative concerns Pilar Galt, a young single mother, who with a bit of luck and a lot of intelligence and skillful maneuvering, has risen from the barrio and met and married the richest man in town. You are aware from the beginning that Paddy and Pilar are going to follow a collision course to their doom. The novel proceeds to that pivotal moment in time. As a matter of fact, the last chapter is called “The Denouement”, which, by the way, is one of my favorite words.

There are a lot of characters, a lot of plot devices, and a lot of legal maneuvering, making the reader wonder who The Best People really are. Certainly Paddy gets his just desserts, but the denouement makes one wonder what lessons he has learned. Many reviewers called it a social satire, and I would definitely concur with that analysis. Even the title is tongue-in-cheek. One of my major take-aways is that greed and corruption are always with us, in Kalamazoo, in Houston, and in Washington. The Houston Chronicle review mentions: “His book acknowledges a naked truth about the Bayou City: it would be a lot less interesting if people weren’t willing to do whatever it took to get ahead. After all, they don’t call it ‘Hustletown’ for nothing.”

The Best People is an intense read. It involves a lot of concentration on the part of the reader, and I needed to finish it before my mind got overcome with Thanksgiving grocery lists. One of my major take-aways is that the author knows the city and its people intimately and is willing to expose its weaknesses. After all, Marc Grossberg has lived in Houston his entire life and has had a more than a 50-year career as a lawyer in the city. His knowledge is deep and his sense of irony is extremely strong.

The Best People: A Tale of Trials and Errors by Marc Grossberg

Paddy Moran, a former cop from Brooklyn is a new lawyer starting out in Houston. He starts up his office and helps fellow police officers through a divorce. He is involved in a few questionable cases as he starts to build his practice, but he is hungry for success.

Paddy crossed paths with a young mother, Pilar, seeking a divorce from her husband, who is a police officer. She makes an impression on Paddy. Pilar is a very intelligent woman from the barrios of Houston. After her divorce, she has a chance meeting through a temp position with the richest man in Houston. I loved Pilar as a character. She had her ups and downs but could turn things around. She struggled with having meaning in her life as her status in the community changes. She seeks to find purpose in her life. I really felt her battles were genuine and realistic.

Paddy partners with another lawyer, Will. Together they make a name for themselves among Family Law practices. I had a love and hate relationship with Paddy and Will. There were times I could not believe what they would do to make more money. On the flip side, there were tender moments when they both were very caring.

The Best People gave me a glimpse into a world I am not familiar with. The author really brings to life the glitz, glamour and entitlement of high society. Even the lesser characters are so well developed. I just wanted to be a fly on the wall of the restaurant, especially on the final night.

The Best People is a wonderfully engaging and entertaining, not what I expected from a legal drama. I read this book over a weekend as I got so caught up in the story. Marc Grossberg delivers an amazing debut novel, in The Best People. I highly recommend it!

The Best People: A Tale of Trials and Errors debut book by Marc Grossberg is definitely a page turner. Mr Grossberg wrote a wonderful story which drew me right in and did not let me go until I turned the last page. The book is very well written and keeps you engaged. The characters are interesting, well defined and likable. There are many twists and turns, power, wealth, poverty it is all here in this book. Ho is right, who will bend the law to get the win. There are choices to be made and the author shows these choices to you and lets you know which ones the characters choose. Will they choose to follow the law or will they bend the rules and hope that they don’t lose everything. Consequences happen when they get in over their head, are too greedy and forget to follow the law so you decide who are the best people?. This book was very fast paced and entertaining. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see what Mr. Grossberg has in store for us next.

CRIME DOESN’t PAY

This book was different than I am use to reading . No body killed any body. There was no serial killer. There was no investigators or detectives chasing after a killer . However , it was a story of love, divorces and white/collar crime.

I admire Marc Grossberg's tenacity and persistence in writing this book, but it simply did not work for me. Technically speaking, his story was plausible in the sense that it did not involve magic to resolve plot contrivances. Time and again, though, things happened that simply would not happen in Harris County courthouses. Cases would not go to trial approximately two months after they were filed. After 2006, you would not be trying a case in the old 1910 courthouse. And by the way, there is no such thing as an irrebutable presumption. I could go on, but it would involve spoilers.

Putting the plot to the side, the main character -- Paddy Moran -- is repellent. It is not that he is unlikeable; he has no redeeming qualities. I guess any conclusion to the book that did not involve Paddy being flayed alive would have been disappointing to me.

Grossberg appeared on firmer footing when discussing tax dodges and shady financial advisors. His description of negotiations with the IRS seemed fairly spot on. He also does a decent job of skewering some of the genteel "old money" rich in Houston. Sadly, there was not much more to recommend.
