A Bad Day for Sunshine is part mystery, part family drama, and many parts wackadoodle!
The new sheriff of Del Sol, New Mexico, Sunshine Vicram, has her hands full her first day on the job: a distraught woman drives her car into the police station, a prisoner has escaped from jail and is hiding out in Del Sol, and a 14-year-old goes missing and leaves an eerie note behind detailing her demise. To make things even more stressful, the Mayor is keeping an eye on Sunshine as her methods for ...more
Meanwhile, Suns daughter, Aurora, is not having an easy time adjusting to her new school. The popular kids have it in for her.

Del Sol, New Mexico has always attracted the artistic, odd & eccentric. Its the type of close knit community where everyones on a first name basis, even with the resident flasher (that would be ...more
100% honesty. I requested this as soon as I saw the cover. Cmon, its soooooo good . . . . .
Then I noticed who the author was and I read a few of her Charley Davidson books waaaaaaaaay back in the day. My previous experience along with the title indicating Sunshine might not be a great thing had my brain thinking this was going to be the story of a vampire Sheriff . . . . .
Dont you judge me. Charley was a dang grim reaper so it ...more
Having never read a book by Darynda Jones, and hearing wonderful things, I accepted the offer by NetGalley to read this story and I am thrilled I did. I have not laughed out loud at a book in quite some time, but his book is often hilarious, uproarious, and rollicking.
Sunshine Vicram is a terrific character, a young woman who mysteriously wins an election in a small town called Del Sol, in New Mexico. She has no idea how she won or even more amazingly how she did not know she was ...more
I thought Charley Davidson was a funny and interesting female character to follow. Yet, I must confess that I didnt finish the series and I'm not sure why except that sometimes life interferes with my reading. I do plan to go back to it at some point.
However, when I learned a new book by Darynda Jones was coming out, I was super excited about it. I've always liked her writing style. As luck would have it, I was given a complimentary copy by the publisher and I couldn't be happier.
I cant say ...more
I will admit to being afraid to start this book. I loved her previous series, its in my top 5 series, read and re-read several times. I was afraid it wouldnt or couldnt be as soul catching. Silly me Ms. DJ, wrote another book that I cant stop thinking about and already want to re-read. The characters are fantastic. Sunshine, Levi, Quincey, Auri, Cruz, Jimmy ...more
In this new series we are introduced to Sunshine Vicram. She is the newly elected sheriff of Del Sol, New Mexico even though she didn't run for the position! On her first day she finds out about the "bad luck muffins" and that throws the whole town into a tailspin. First there is a missing rooster, two teenagers are missing add to that the history Sunshine ...more

Those elements I mentioned is the snarky heroine, fun sidekicks and an incredibly intense hero. To me it's the perfect formula to an entertaining series. As fun and entertaining as this book was, it also had some ...more
You get all the satire you would expect from Jones with a great new group of characters.
Of course I compared it to the Charley Davidson series (how could I not?).
Yes some of the characters (and even some of the plot) have similar aspects.
Does it make this any less enjoyable?
I am totally looking forward to reading more in this series.
Much love to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for my ARC.
Witty, entertaining, humorous and sometimes even a little nerve-grating, Darynda Joness A BAD DAY FOR SUNSHINE brings big time crime to a sleepy little town and the new sheriff is going to have her work cut out for her when the quirky residents of the town range from a senior flasher to a psychic baker to a ...more
***I received a free copy from the publisher via Netgalley and chose to leave a voluntary review. Thank you!***
To be honest I was a bit nervous about this book after her great Charley Davidson series and if it would hold up to it. And Im happy to report, yes, it does. It is different than Charley Davidson, but still very good in his own rights.
Admittedly, it took me about 5-10% to really get into it but then I really enjoyed it.
We get both POVs, Sunshine and her daughter Auris , which...more
I always get very excited when I hear that Darynda Jones is writing/releasing a new book. So after the conclusion of the Charley Davidson series, I really looked forward to seeing what she would come up with next. Darynda is one of my favorites authors, so I would've one-clicked this book without even reading the blurb (and I only do that with a few authors). A Bad Day for Sunshine is the first book in the Sunshine Vicram series. The ...more
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
As a BIG fan of the Charley Davidson series, I was thrilled when A Bad Day For Sunshine was announced. I love Daryndas writing style, the characters she creates, and the worlds she develops.
This book sounded like it would have a similar vibe. It did not. This book missed the marked entirely. It was extremely slow and held my interest for about 10% of the book.
Both Sunshine and Auri (her daughter) are narrators, which ...more
Ms. Jones' descriptive writing made the town of Del Sol and it's residents come alive. This story flowed as readers are introduced to Sunshine, Quincy, Auri, Jimmy, Hailey and Levi. The kidnapping mystery was complex with so few suspects and clues that I was beginning to doubt if it would be solved in this first book. With Ms. Jones' sarcastic wit, a well-crafted plot and another ...more
Until then I do want to say that this book grabbed me from the first chapter. I read this as an ARC so there were some issues that I hope will have been found and straightened out. For one there is an incident with a car going through the front wall of the police station and nothing is said about- no how are we going to fix it, or someone is fixing it-it was like it never had happened. Then there was an issue with one of the bully girls coming up to Aurora ...more
