Vladimír Boudník never wanted to live as a successor to what had already occurred. He preferred instead to play the imbecile whose only wish was to initiate a new era, a new epoch, a new life brought into being through him.
— Bohumil Hrabal

"To all of you who are reading this text and looking at Vladimír [Boudník's] graphics, don't think of them merely in terms of technique. Do not try to determine what Vladimír was trying to say about reality through his graphics. Think, as you look, about the miraculous effervescence of reality itself ticking away from second to second, and on into eternity.

Think about Vladimír, who felt at home wherever he was. Think of how his studio was always where he happened to be at the moment. Think of ho

In post-war Prague, Bohumil Hrabal, Egon Bondy, and Vladimir Boudnik formed a coterie of eccentrics, drinking massive quantities of beer, getting into screaming matches amongst each other, and generally frightening the horses; while they weren't careening around Prague and the surrounding countryside pissed as newts, each managed to produce prodigious amounts of art, Hrabal in the form of fiction, Bondy poetry, and Boudnik, the founder and perhaps sole practitioner of "Explosionism", of graphic ...more

Mixed feelings on this one. It starts out well, it's hilarious and at times unexpectedly beautiful. Hell, there is this one specific part that may have become one of my all time favorite reading moments thanks to its beauty and makes me giddy to read the rest of the story.

But there is no one specific story, and instead it's a collection of short stories which make it all seem kind of low effort. There are some nice moments, but it was nothing special to me. Though I feel the main issue was I cou

What vivacity from these pages, as of adhesive seeped between cracks and, in its excess, and yet awaiting its drying action whereby it makes to plunge two disparate threads rendered separate by a chasm connected, oozes. Little can I say to know of post-war Czech history, but yet the segments in this memoir, quite regardless of such ignorance, respire an inspired, profoundly human air. A tone for any and all time. Hrabal’s writing straddles an earthy realism pungent, redolent of rain-drenched mud ...more

First of all I'm a big fan of Bohumil Hrabel and his writings but I found this a bit disjointed. It is the adventures of Hrabel, his friend and Artist Vladimir Boudkin and the reactions to these of their other friend Egon Bondy.I

In fairness, the goings on revolve around drinking, discussing Art, accidents and madness. The various escapades come thick and fast but there is no narrative arc. Each scenario is just added on to the previous one in a litany of we did this then we did that. It was like

An influential Czech artist during the 1950s and ‘60s, Vladimir Boudnik was a close friend of Bohumil Hrabal, who wrote this brief memoir of their acquaintance as a tribute to him. When Hrabal says that this is a “poetic and truthful” account of their friendship, mutual friends of Hrabal and Boudnik are quick to point out that “poetic and truthful” does not mean “factual.”

Or no less factual than the bar talk and digressions that his novels are known for, allegedly largely built upon the stories

When I reached for this book, I didn't know at all what to expect, how should I prepare myself to embrace this text and how would/should I feel about what I was going to read now. There is always some kind of bewilderment one can experience when some book manages to shake the established vision of the world and people.

With every page turned I felt more and more like a participant in one of the Vladimir's happenings, opening myself to the "ordinary wonders", seeping deeper into the world that is

Born in Brno-Židenice, Moravia, he lived briefly in Polná, but was raised in the Nymburk brewery as the manager's stepson.

Hrabal received a Law degree from Prague's Charles University, and lived in the city from the late 1940s on.

He worked as a manual laborer alongside Vladimír Boudník in the Kladno ironworks in the 1950s, an experience which inspired the "hyper-realist" texts he was writing at t
