About the author

Mischa Elman Rogers Service, Ph.D. (Anthropology, Columbia University, 1951; B.A., English Literature; University of Michigan) was a theorist of cultural evolution and Professor of Anthropology at University of California at Santa Barbara, having previously taught at Columbia and the University of Michigan. He also served as the Secretary-Treasurer of the American Ethnological Society and was a member of the American Anthropological Association.

I was lucky enough to find an old edition of this book. This is a great source for anyone interested in primitive cultures and anthropology. The book is very well organized and the narrative is very simple, taking into account that not every reader is an anthropologist.
One of the best things about this book is the references he used. He usually uses direct references/accounts from late 19th century which are not filtered with modern political correct views. So, gives you a chance to examine these societies with your own judgements and thoughts.
