Color reproductions of the paintings may be more accurate than they are in other books. The introductory text is incomprehensible. Excerpts from Cezanne’s letters are presented without context or explanation, making them likewise unintelligible. Comments by his artist contemporaries guide our understanding of Cezanne’s intentions and personality. Comments by critics mostly negative and inexplicable. Descriptions of the color plates are merely descriptive and lack explanation; references to certain details or techniques don’t reveal their significance.
