FURTHER GOOD NEWS: the german translation is free and i know german!!!
FURTHER BAD NEWS: when i say "i know german" i mean "i studied it at GCSE and got the highest grade however my grasp of the language is still atrocious"

Gelezen toen ik 16 was: wat een exuberante-barokke stijl, maar ik was er helemaal weg van! Couperus brengt een evocatie van het Rome van de 3de eeuw, met de decadentie rond de keizer Heliogabalus dik in de verf gezet. Ik herlas onlangs nog enkele passages: dit lijkt eigenlijk niet meer leesbaar, vrees ik.

De triltintelende hemel en wat dies meer zij, die tedere sfeer met fraaie neologismen voor de lezende fijnproever, het is genieten van het impressionisme ten top; de uiterste decadentie in het wrede Rome zo overladen beschrijven dat je bij het lezen de walging bijna fysiek voelt, dat is beide Louis Couperus in zijn roman ‘De berg van licht’ in grootse vorm.
