The stars of Jonathan Fenske's 2016 Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor book, A Pig, a Fox, and a Box , are back!
Pig and Fox are back—and so are their shenanigans! Told in a silly three-part story, A Pig, a Fox, and Stinky Socks begins with a prank, with Fox "gifting" Pig with a pair of stinky socks. But what happens when his plan goes awry and the shoe (or sock!) is on the other foot? With comical art and simple language, Pig and Fox's antics in this Level 2 reader will continue to crack kids up.
Jonathan Fenske is the author and illustrator of the leveled readers Woodward and McTwee, Love Is in the Air, Guppy Up!, and A Pig, a Fox, and a Box, which was a 2016 Geisel Honor book. He is also the author of two picture books, Barnacle Is Bored and its follow-up, Plankton Is Pushy. Jonathan lives in South Carolina with his family.
Jumping into Level 2 reading, Neo took us on this rhyming adventure where Fox sought to play a few tricks on his friend, Pig. Sporting a pair of stinky socks, Fox hid them so that Pig would find them at the most inopportune time. However, this backfired and Pig got the last laugh. By the end of this joke-filled story, Fox was sent off with a bar of soap, seeking a bath to rid himself of that horrible stink. Neo is doing so well and deciphering so many words in his reading. I am eager to see how much success he has in the coming weeks.
First sentence: I am Fox. I am Pig. I am little. I am big. I have some socks. I like to play. I think I will trick Pig today.
Premise/plot: Fox hasn't changed all that much since the first book, A Pig, A Fox, and a Box. Fox still is trying to trick Pig. Fox has STINKY SOCKS this time instead of a box. (Otherwise, it's almost the same book.) There is a box in this one. (I wonder if it's the SAME box?)
My thoughts: For early readers that loved the first book, this one may prove equally enjoyable. I personally find it a bit funnier. (The first book was a bit boring in my opinion.)
A simple story told in three parts wherein Fox tricks his friend, Pig, with some stinky socks. The repetition, rhyme, and rhythm are all reminiscent of Dr. Seuss but the antics are more modern. I'm not too fond of the fact that Fox is continually mean to Pig. His pranks aren't funny and he never apologizes to Pig. Pig does seem to be upset by finding the stinky socks (first in his mail then in his dinner) but tolerates Fox's behavior. Poor behavior without repercussion doesn't provide a good role model.
Easy readers can be hard because the vocabulary is so limited. But this one works humorously, as sneaky fox gets his comeuppance unknowingly from pig. It is actually possible to follow the story without the words, just from the pictures, which gives very beginning readers a leg up in comprehension. (BTW, as an expert reader I had a hard time NOT reading the words to try it out with just the pictures as a new reader would)
Fox thinks he’s going to play a trick on his friend pig but it doesn’t work out how he plans, so he going to try to trick him again. This is a funny, silly story that beginner readers will enjoy as it’s repetitive in parts with limited vocabulary using sight words. Like a graphic novel, the story is easy to follow in text boxes with bright bold print with text bubbles above the characters and the pictures are bright and colorful. A great story!
Miss 7 thought this was funny! Fox keeps trying to play tricks on Pig but they backfire; at the end of the book, it's Fox that is stinky enough to knock a fly unconscious.
Miss 7 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
Pig and Fox are friends, but Fox has an idea for a great trick to pull on Pig...and it involves stinky socks! Divided into three short parts, this is a great book if you are ready to move on from shorter picture books. I think that if you like Elephant and Piggie, you would like this book, too.
This is the second early reading chapter book about Pig and Fox. In this book, Fox is trying to play a joke on Pig by placing his stinky socks where Pig least expects to find them. But unfortunately for Fox, his plan backfires. A fun book to share or read independently.
This enjoyable little book has three short stories in it. Fox likes to play tricks on Pig so in two of the stories he uses his stinky socks to prank Pig. On both occasions, the tricks end up to be on Fox. In part three Fox has to do cleanup.
Beginning reader with Pig and Fox. Told in three short stories. Fox plays tricks on Pig with his stinky socks. Pig does not fall for them. Simple text with lots of humor for young readers.
The rhymes are still great, the illustrations are still good, but my son and I agree that the story in this one is not as fun as in the last, perhaps because the fox’s tricks seem a little more mean spirited.
