This book launched my entire tech career, which is still going strong. I remember almost none of the details but the structure, pacing, respectful yet helpful tone, all served to shape the foundation of what would become a life-changing adventure that still delights me to this day.
The helpful dragon made it exciting for a nine-year boy. While my friends were playing Starblazers on their fancy Apple IIc's, I had either the cartridge-based Epson or a fancy tower-sized "portable" with a 4" green CRT and futuristic 5 1/4 floppies.
Both ran BASIC, or GBASIC, or some other odd fork. I found joy, and beauty, in writing code via this book. I spent rapt nights entering in line after line of text, trying not to skip ahead and start modifying the code to my own ideas.
I gave my original copy to a junior dev that I thought wanted to really learn to code. I regret that to this day but I'd do it again, just for the chance to perhaps teach or light the same fire that this book did for me.
