Can a fling with the world’s hottest rock star become real love?
I took a few days to search my soul and, in the process, I found him. Chance Santos. He’s charming. Drop dead gorgeous. In his arms, I’m rediscovering who I am. And who I want to be. We’re a fleeting moment in time. An erotic madness. He’s much too young. Too spontaneous. The opposite of everything that I thought was right for me. He’s also everything I never knew my heart craved. Logic screams for me to walk away. But I can’t. Is one amazing weekend enough for forever?
***Layla’s Chance originally published in the RECKLESS Anthology. It has been expanded with all-new, never-before-published content & epilogue.
Mika Jolie is the bestselling author of the Martha’s Way series. She lives in New Jersey with her Happy Chaos—her husband and their energizer bunnies. A sports fanatic and a wine aficionado, she’s determined to balance it all and still write about life experiences and matters of the heart. Let’s face it, people are complicated and love can be messy. When she’s not weaving life and romance into evocative tales, you can find her on a hiking adventure, apple picking, or whatever her three men can conjure up. She loves to hear from readers. For a novella, this had so much feeling and depth. Add in plenty of sexy times, a hero and heroine that are well developed, and you’ve got the makings for an amazing read.
I loved reading about Layla and Chance. While their relationship starts off fast and their time together is limited, this wasn’t really an over the top insta-love romance. It’s more like an insta-let’s-see-where-this-thing-goes thing. That in itself was refreshing.
Layla’s character was deeper and heavier than that of Chance. Then again, we are only given her point of view up until the very end. I think that helped to fully develop this story as it was focused on what was going on with them and how she was reacting to it. I really liked her and the way she handled her issues. This isn’t a fairytale where everything just automatically falls into perfect glittering place. There were hard choices that had to be made and I respected her for the struggle she experienced making them.
As stated, we don’t have Chance’s view point so it was harder to get a full picture of where he was emotionally. However, he was pretty straight forward about what he wanted, what he felt, and what he could and could not do. Despite his rock star status he was not a player by any means. He pulled me in with his easy way and his fierce desire for Layla as well as his decision to allow Layla to make the ultimate decision without pressuring her.
This older woman/younger man story was fast paced with the feel of a fuller story due to the beautiful prose layered throughout. Secondary characters are minimal due to the length, but we do get a bit of a peek at a couple of our favorites from previous books. Overall, this was a really good read and a great choice if you’re looking for something between lengthier reads.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I don't normally read younger guy/older woman, rock star or instant chemistry books but I was intrigued by this book so I decided to read a few pages and decide whether I wanted to continue or not. Needless to say, I was hooked from the beginning. Layla's story resonated with me as she was passed over for a promotion that she felt she deserved and had earned.......she took a weekend to find herself and in the process found her soulmate. Some times in life you just go through the motions and exist but Layla's story reminds us all that we have 1 life to live....do the things you want to do, see the things you want to see, be with the person you want to be with......don't just exist...LIVE! Take a chance on Layla's story....you might just find your next 5 star read like I did!
I found this book through a FB group reco. This is KU & a novella. The H, Chance is a rock star & the h, Layla is a corporate attorney & 13 yrs older than Chance. The POV is first person Layla. I enjoyed this author's writing. I liked the characters. The story was brief and their attraction was fairly early in the book. I would love to read more from this author-especially full length books. I'm OK with older women, younger men couples. Two in my family are 13 yrs & 15 years difference & both couples are married over 30 yrs. There's no cheating and no big drama. Mainly it's Layla finding out what she really wants. 3.5 stars.
This book is amazing. Mika has an amazing way of making you see and feel what she writes. I couldn’t wait to finish this book and now I’m sad it’s done. I loved seeing some old Martha’s way favorites and meeting new ones. While older woman/younger male romance isn’t typically my style it works amazing in this story. I truly hope to see more Chance and Layla in the future! Thank you Mika for another amazing book ❤️
Coming to understand your real self is probably one of the hardest things you’ll ever do in life, if you ever can. Doing what you were really meant to do to is just as hard. The ability to overcome preconceived ideas and social stigma,...pretty tough. Following your heart and taking a risk is THE hardest thing of all. This is just a snapshot of what we are treated to in Layla’s Chance.
I don’t do spoilers because I don’t believe it’s fair to the author. I tell you how the book affected me. If you want to learn more read the blurb. Better yet read the book. What I will tell you is this is a book with depth. It’s soul searching for several reasons and gives us the question of do you believe in fate or destiny? It also tackles the older woman, younger man question. Can love between anyone, any age really exist and last?
The author did an excellent job of tackling all these issues and not making lite of them. She wrote a cohesive, touching smart story and brought up issues that face many of us today. How many of us really follow our dreams, or do what we really want to do, or do we even know what our dreams are? Do we just settle for what makes sense? Do what pleases others and when faced with inconsistencies or being treated unfairly do we face it head on, run, or think it through? Is age really the problem or is it maturity? There’s a lot going on in this little story. Besides all that you get smiles, laughs, maybe some tears, romance, and HEAT! We’re also treated to some pretty cool secondary characters and some beautiful scenery.
Layla is searching and she doesn’t even know it. Chance is, wow. However, he’s not just a pretty, handsome face. That’s all you get from me. You need to read the story.
What I will tell you is I read this book in once sitting. Not because it’s short. It’s because I couldn’t stop even if I wanted to. I had to find out the resolutions. The regular story would have been enough but the added epilogues were a present. I guess you can tell I liked this book. It’s smart, tackles social issues realistically, touching and real. Kudos to the author.
This book is HOT. I wasn't too sure about an older woman and a younger rock star. Mostly because I kept putting myself in her place and thinking there's no way I would date someone that young. But eventually, I kind of forgot about it in this story. It's just that good! My only complaint is that there wasn't more!
Besides that, I really enjoyed this story. The age gap was done well enough, and I especially liked that they were just two random people that met. No son's best friend, no neighbor boy all grown up. Ugh.
Ever lost the people you love and closed your heart? Didn't someone you love hurt you so much and let you down and left you alone!? These awful things happened to this lovely young women Layla, she is 40 and her father left her alone at a young age. She never knew her mother... She met this handsome young man; Chance who is 27. He was so nice to her. Both of them had chemistry but Layla's heart was so guarded, she was afraid to let him in. She was 13 years older than him she was afraid... The characters are well written. I loved them both and I loved how courageous Chance was. If you want to find what happened and If you want to find out if Layla let her guards down just read this book.
Lyrical What a gorgeous book! Layla really resonated with me, she made my heart soar. The leap of faith she took with Chance was so startling, but so perfect. This book felt like a BIG IMPORTANT BOOK wrapped up in sweet novella. The emotion took my breath away. Nobody does imagery better than Mika Jolie, and she makes Layla and Chance shine! Their chemistry leapt off the page, they were so sexy! Layla’s Chance is a powerfully uplifting book, a must read!
Layla and Chance's love story is an older woman younger man romance which I have not read in a while and was a refreshing change for me. I can honestly say that I absolutely loved Layla's Chance. It held me entranced from the very first chapter. I was so invested in the characters and their journey that I had a hard time putting it down which led to me devouring it in a day.
I love how Layla was the older woman. It was nice to read a book that wasn't based on "young love" for a chance. My absolute favorite quote from this book was "Just like the lotus around your neck, you can rise from the mud, bloom, and radiate into the world".
It's a must read, take the chance and give Layla's Chance a read.
Wow. I can't believe the chemistry that Mika Jolie created between Layla and Chance. I honestly sat back and marveled at Mika's skill of using mere words to create characters that are so vivid, so real. I wanted to write down specific sentences that spoke to my heart, and I immediately wanted to start back at the beginning and read it again. I absolutely LOVED this book!
Five beautiful stars! This was one of my most favorite reads! What’s better than a story that centers around an older woman and a cool young rock star?
Layla was an attorney who had made her job the most important thing in her life; So when she received some disappointing news about a career move, it shook her hard. It made her think about the goals she had set for herself and whether or not she still wanted to achieved them. Then Chance the young rock star came into her life and offered her love, comfort and peace of mind -something she thought had eluded her. It was a chance to change direction; a chance to find her happily ever after. All she had to do was take a chance and make a choice.
Mika Jolie delivered a fantastic story, about finding love when one is least expecting it. It was delightfully sweet, sexy and realistic. Layla’s Chance read like a full length novel. The story was solid, with fully developed characters, who had amazing chemistry and great depth. I was hooked from beginning to end and I couldn’t get enough. If you’re a fan of steamy, swoon-worthy romances with compelling characters, I would highly recommend this book. I guarantee, you will love it!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was amazing. On Layla’s 40th birthday, the promotion she has been working hard for is given to a younger colleague. Devastated she goes home and decides to get away if only for a weekend. Layla goes to Martha’s Vineyard. She goes out to eat to celebrate her birthday and the waiter suggests she go to a club called Vapor. She also decides to buy a dress she saw in a store window to treat herself. She is daydreaming as she is walking and bumps into someone and down they both go. Sparks fly as she looks up to see a gorgeous guy staring back at her. He asks her name and she tells him “Layla”. He asks her out for a drink but she declines. Sitting at the bar later she gets the same feeling and knows the gorgeous stranger is here. Eye contact is made and he heads straight for her. Sparks fly. Hang on tight readers because you’re in for a great love story where age is just a number and doesn’t mean anything.
I loved Layla's Chance. This story proves that love knows no boundaries. Everyone has struggles and insecurities, but when your heart gets involved you can overcome any limitations if you want it bad enough. Chance and Layla prove this....she's bothered because she's older than him and he's a musician. Chance realizes the only important thing is love!!
Mika Jolie writes in way that allows you to feel what her characters are feeling. I keep looking around trying to spot Chance and Layla! Love love love!!!
Mika Jolie's Layla's Chance is an amaxing story filled with thrilling moments and enjoyable characters you'll fall in love with instantly. This author has a knack for writing stories containing well developed protagonists and a plot that feels real. And this is no exception. It is an amazing, sweet and intriguing story.
Gorgeously written rock star romance! A sexy, sweet, romantic younger man/older woman read. Layla and Chance are such a sweet couple! Loved the sizzling chemistry between a younger man and an older woman!
This was a really good older woman/younger man romance. It is believable and I really enjoyed how they literally ran into each other. I love how the title uses the character names and I enjoyed how sweet Chance was with Layla. I loved how easily he could read her, even when they first met. I appreciated that it was Layla that needed to grow in order to open herself up to a relationship, while Chance was a very mature character who was in touch with his emotions. These two are perfect for each other, regardless of age and I really appreciated how the age difference was a non-issue to Chance from the beginning. I honestly was not sure how I felt about this trope but I loved this story. It is definitely one to re-read. I initially read this book as part of the Reckless anthology. The extensions to that story to create this book are seamless. The story feels like it developed naturally, and I found myself really wanting these two to get their HEA. The bonus scenes at the end are perfect. Mika Jolie giftedly writes a book where the setting is described so well I could smell the salty ocean air in my living room. I enjoyed her writing style and look forward to reading more of her books. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Layla Benedict takes a quick trip from Chicago to Martha's Vineyard after going through a lot of hard times- never meeting her mother, her father dying, and then losing a huge promotion at work on her fortieth birthday. So she leaves for Martha's Vineyard to search her soul, clear her mind, and shake off the funk that she's in. When she collides with a handsome gentleman on the street that cradles her as they fall, Layla quickly shakes her funk off and discovers the handsomeness that is Chance Santos.
Layla didn't mean to fall in love with Chance. She fully denies it at first. But as soon as his lips met hers in a tender kiss? It was all over. Meeting again and again for kisses and romance is making them crazy for each other. There's a couple of problems, though, that prevents Layla from pursuing her emotions with Chance.
1) He's 27. She's 40. 2) He's the lead singer of a band that's going to travel soon for a tour. 3) He's spontaneous and fun while she's shy and organized.
Should Layla take a chance and follow her heart on Chance? Or should she walk away from the only chance at being happy?
Layla has just turned 40 and is at a crossroads in her life. She has focused all her attention on her career to the detriment of her personal relationships so when she doesn’t receive the promotion that she expected she heads to Martha’s Vineyard to re-evaluate her life.
From the first time that Layla met Chance they had an instant chemistry and connection however Layla had reservations about a relationship between her and the younger rockstar. Will Layla be willing to open her heart to the possibility of anything more than a fling with Chance?
I really enjoyed both these characters. Chance is determined that he and Layla belong together and is willing to be patient until she realizes it as well.
Once in a while I find an author that has it all! And this is it! Mika Jolie makes the story come to life. She invites you in to experience the emotions and the actions made by the characters in the story. The story stays with you even after you've stopped reading. Her writing is poetically seductive which makes this one so hard to put down but is also one of the books you can go back to time and again. Read it and enjoy!
Layla's turning 40, she's punched in the gut at work and has no one to turn to at home. On a whim she heads off to Martha's Vineyard for the weekend to regroup and figure out her next step. She meets Chance and her weekend takes a different turn. Instant attraction between the two forces Layla to step out of her comfort zone. When Chance wants more, will Layla step out and take a chance? Great characters and a great story!
Another great book, Layla and Chance were a great coupling, I appreciate that Layla knew that she had to work in herself before trying to build a relationship with Chance. Chance didn't force the issue either which was commendable. This book it's now 5:47a.m.and I had to finish it and leave my review it was that good. Thank you for writing about these characters Mika. I love your writing.
Loved it! Kayla and Chance are awesome! I love the older woman, younger man who happens to be a rock star! They are so perfect together! The sparks flying bwteen them will keep you warm on cold nights lol. I loved Chance so much! I had so much fun with this! It's a fast read that definitely makes me want more!
Layla and Chance sizzle with chemistry and passion. Their love story is fun, flirty, and fast paced. I adored these characters and was enthralled by their bond. There is heat and heart and a HEA. I wanted more!
Layla’s Chance by Mika Jolie is a steamy romance with heart. It tells the story of Layla a forty-year-old lawyer and Chance a 27-year-old rock star who found their happily ever after in each other’s arms. Their journey to this point, however, was not without its challenges.
More than a romance as this story demonstrated what it means to let go of one’s fears and follow one’s dreams. It delved into the older woman and younger man relationships and how society perceives it. Love does not see age, race or physical structure.
Layla lived her life in order to escape pain and heartache. She avoided relationships as much as she possibly can because of her fear of abandonment. Everyone she ever loved ended up leaving her. She threw herself into her work, but that too proved a disappointment when the promotion she had her sights on was given to a younger counterpart. On receiving this devastating news she took a trip to Martha‘s Vineyard to celebrate her fortieth birthday and reevaluate her life. What she never expected was her chance meeting with a hot, young and sexy rock star who would set her body and heart on fire.
Layla’s struggles leapt off the pages. She craved Chance, but he was the embodiment of everything she has avoided for the past 21 years. Her heart and body wanted all Chance offered, but her head kept pulling her in a different direction.
Although the story was told primarily from Layla’s POV, I gained insight into Chance’s feelings. Without a doubt, he cared for Layla, but he was not the type to push. He had his share of uncertainties, but he is not afraid to go after what he wants.
I thought they made a great couple. Chance was exactly what Layla needed even if she did not recognize it.
This story is about taking a leap of faith, stepping out of your comfort zone and finding love when one least expects it and with the unlikeliest of persons.
Layla’s Chance is a strong novella. Story and character development was good. Although the relationship started out fast, I enjoyed the romance. It was sweet, hot and refreshing.
Conclusion/Recommendation This was another great story from this author and I am eager to know what next she has in store for her fans. If you enjoy spicy May/December romance, then take a chance on Layla’s Chance.
Layla's Chance was a captivating and engaging romance that will grab your interest from start to finish. This was my first Mika Jolie novel and I absolutely loved it. This younger man/older woman story was a well-written refreshing story and definitely one of my top reads this year. The author told this story in such a way that you could relate to these characters and feel every emotion they were feeling. The connection Layla and Chance had was intense and you felt their spark from the moment they met. The steamy scenes that followed was off the charts hot, yet it was also more, as you felt their need to be together. I loved these characters. They were real, well developed and will have you rooting for them in no time. Layla's Chance was a story about finding love when you least expect it and living life to the fullest. This page-turner was a phenomenal read and I would highly recommend it to all romance lovers.
This is just the most swoon-worthy read. It’s a rock star, older woman/younger man, follow your heart romance with buckets of tender moments and hot chemistry. A real feel good book.
I must admit that older woman/younger man is one of my favourite tropes. So when I realised that this book featured a younger, hot rock star was interested in an older woman on the verge of a midlife crisis, I was sold.
Chance, the rock star in question, is wiser than his years and absolutely fearless when it comes to owning how he feels. Layla is the exact opposite- full of self doubt, introspective and cautious. Can she really gamble everything on love?
I really enjoyed reading Chance and Layla’s story. It was hot, sweet and sexy and just perfect.
Going to give this story 🎸🎸🎸 and a half guitars. Though I really enjoyed reading an older woman younger part of this story. It truly was well written there were a few times the story that I even envied Layla for her self confidence I mean not to many women would only be able to find just one flaw with their bodies lol. But even when she is having an insta love.connection with a much younger rock star shed only found one. This story though it was truly well written it lacked something at times it felt like it lacked drama that thing you get when you're reading a story and your heart starts to pound with excitement and at other times I felt like passion was missing. Over all a well written story just not enough grasp for me.
