No one knows it exists. IT DOES.
An intriguing, thought-provoking, suspenseful thriller. Very realistic, serving as a wake-up call. Featuring a strong female protagonist and her male colleague. Well written and properly edited. Definitely a page-turner.
I had never heard of the 51st Directive, and I hope to God I never hear of it in reality and not fiction!
No matter what your political affiliation is, this book is a must read! This could happen!
This book had great character development and you quickly find your favorites. Mine was Marie, what can I say, I love Italian food! Sam wasn’t bad either!
My review thought for this book is: Was the author better at describing the concrete or the abstract? Well, I would have to say both equally, how about you?
Great read and extremely unsettling as well! This is the type of fiction you wish hadn't been written lest it give the bad guys even more insane ideas. I was unaware that the 51st directive was a real thing, but it definitely is, and you can easily imagine it destroying our democracy. America has such a precious thing in our democracy, and I often wish more people understood that it is not a given, it can be taken away. It has been being chipped away at for decades, it wouldn't take very much to bring it tumbling down. This book should stand as a warning as to how fragile it is.
Wow! This has to be the best book I have read this year. I could not put it down! If this is an example of what this author writes, I can't wait to read more of his work!
DISCLAIMER : I received an ARC( advance review copy) of this book for free from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you, Michael Agliolo for providing me with an e-ARC of this book.
Michael Agliolo has written a book full of action and adventure that will leave you excited for the story and excited for how its all going to turn out. I loved this book and the plot. I found the plot to be very interesting and unique. The characters were great and simple. The plot was carried out beautifully. The story was very entertaining and engaging from beginning to end. I found the book enjoyable.
The story is of a head-strong, take no prisoners-attitude FBI Agent Erica Brewer who due to her no-nonsense attitude has to work in the mailroom as punishment. There as she sorts through the various mails, she finds a letter addressed to her Boss. The letter written by someone who claims to be dead piques her interest. What starts off as an excuse to get out of the mailroom, soon turns into a chase and run of their lifetime.
Erica is strong, sassy and loves her job. Her personality is great without being obnoxious. There were moments where the 5-second look she talks about was getting a bit over the top for me. I did roll my eyes at those moments but got caught up in the story soon.
Marco is a great character without being overtly macho and exuding the usual alpha traits seen in books. He was subtle in terms of the Alphaness and wasn't egotistical. He was a great supporting character and well balanced for Erica's character. Their dynamic was great. I wanted more of their banter, but the story was very much focused on the political conspiracy that is threatening to take down the nation. There were at times in the beginning chapters were Marcos's character is talked about as Sam, which confused me as we didn't know his full name at the time. Other than that the plot and characters were solid. but soon got caught up in the story.
I loved Ron's character. His sequences were laugh-out-loud funny. He was interesting character that added a little bit of humor into the plot. Anthony Hayes also was great with his brand of security toys and nerd talk. Shreya, Gilliam, Colonel were all amazing throughout.
The villains in this book were great. I loved how the author put two of the most unlikely people to be the antagonists in this book. How power changes the way people think and act is very well demonstrated in this book. The idea of someone powerful using it against the very own people whom they have sworn to serve as a fascinating aspect of this story. I read many political themed crime/action-thrillers. Most set in the US almost always have Middle-eastern countries or Muslims as terrorists. The number of movies where the same rhetoric is pushed out is unbelievable. So to have a book that has political intrigue in it with some of the key players being the villains was a fresh of breath air to me. I loved how the author took a Presidential directive and put a spin on it and provided the readers with a vastly different and mind-blowing scenario.
The romance in this book was not insta-love, but more of a coming together of two adults who work closely together. Their relationship progressed at a believable pace with the right amount of attraction on both ends. Their dynamic was good. The story wasn't shadowed by their romance and therefore the plot shined very well throughout the book.
I definitely recommend checking out this book as it is a very quick read. It's highly entertaining and engaging from the get-go. The book will capture your interest from the first chapter to the end. The pacing of the book, the plot and characters were all great. Overall it was 4 stars read for me and highly recommend it to all action-thriller lovers out there.
This is an outstanding story of treason and constitutional law in the United States. It has murder, solders, intrigue, suspense, mystery, romance, friendships, and politics. In short, a very intense but enjoyable read.
I bought the book after virtually meeting the author on Twitter. My mom read it before I got to it. She started it yesterday and finished it today. She loves it. She said it was great from the start. She loved the characters and the plot. It was well written. She says it taught her many things that she didn't know, or if she did know them, she had forgotten them. Those are her words, not mine. lol As you know, Mom's know best, so go get yourself a copy.
6 months ago I would have dismissed this novel as scaremongering and fanciful. Now it looks somewhat different!
The story was engaging and interesting. I found the main character to be somewhat annoying and none of the characters were fleshed out well but the story kept me interested. The editing was awful and there were some jarring moments. One that comes immediately to mind is the reference to a “brand new Pontiac Firebird”, a vehicle that was last produced in 2002…
*I received a free copy of the e-book through Voracious Readers Only in exchange for an honest review.*
Genre: Action-adventure, cop drama POV: alternates between 3rd person and 1st person (train of thought style)
Summary: Erica Brewer is an FBI agent with a bit of temper who has been banished to the mailroom to cool down when she comes across a very strange letter alluding to a high-level conspiracy. Once the letter correctly predicts an attack at the White House, Brewer begins investigating the man who wrote the letter. Turns out he was murdered, and his death is being investigated by a PD detective, Sam. Together, Sam and Erica try to find evidence of the conspiracy before they are silenced. Can they prevent the next attack? Can they take down the offenders?
Pluses: I found the story line to be very interesting, I am a bit of a sucker for Presidential conspiracy/dramas like Scandal and House of Cards. The pacing was excellent, I had trouble putting it down.
Minuses: Erica is most definitely a woman written by a man. In an attempt to make her less 'girlie' she just becomes every cliché of a 'strong' female cop out there: drinks wine from a mug, yells at basketball games, can't cook, is messy, bitchy, borderline alcoholic, speed demon, etc. Every man she meets (except Sam) ogles her. Why do we have to take time out of the story to read about this? Are all men gross? Why would she care enough to notice and include it in her inner monologue? This eventually dies down, but I found it quite annoying for the first third of the book.
*The version of epub that I read contained numerous typos, but I have been assured that the full release does not contain these errors.*
As far as conspiracy theories go, 51st Directive is one of those that is quite realistic and full of contemplations.
Erica, an FBI agent has been sent to the basement for mail duties as punishment. This is when she comes across an anonymous letter, which gives cause for concerns. She decides not to ignore the contents and brings it to the attention of Gilliam, her boss.
Sam is a detective who is contacted by Erica to validate the source of the anonymous letter. Once Erica gets confirmation of who might have sent the letter, she makes an appointment to see Sam.
They decide to carry out a joint investigation, and what they uncover is baffling. Their findings only raise more questions, leading to those who are meant to look after the welfare of the nation. The conspiracy is buried so deep into the dark web that it's going to take a lot of digging to get to the bottom of this dangerous plot. Life is about to change overnight causing confusion and chaos in the process. Can they catch those power hungry beings before it's too late?
This is well paced with various twists. Erica has a sharp mind as well as a sharp tongue, and her dedication to her job and country is commandable. Sam appears to be laid back, but his work ethics are second to none. It's fascinating watching the unravelling of the plot where all the secondary characters play important roles. The romance is slow, and believable. I like the friendship and professional relationship between Erica and Shreya.
This thrilling story sure gives food for thoughts, considering everything going on in the world. It's full of mystery and intrigues. It shows that those who are power hungry will stop at nothing to get what they want. Deceiving and murdering the innocents, putting the blame on those oblivious to what is really happening. It's scary and fascinating at the same time. If you like conspiracy theories with murder, mystery and a devious plot, then this book is definitely worth reading.
I was kindly issued with an eARC and the views expressed are my personal opinion.
During one of the most challenging times in the US history as the country looked at its new normal post 9/11, then president George W Bush signed into law, the 51st Directive which lets the sitting president take over any part of the government or all of the government should he/she feel that the Constitution and its institutions are being threatened by foreign or domestic adversaries. The author looks at what that might look like in this story. When FBI detective Erica Brewer opens a letter which starts with "I am already dead," and a warning of other expected deaths to come, her FBI intuition kicks in and starts the process of getting to the bottom of who sent this, who is dead and who is going to die. She involves many of her colleagues whose skills in penetrating the dark web will root out many clues. When a body is found who is the brother of a Colonel at Fort Pendleton, Erica pairs up with Detective Sam Marco and they work against the clock to find who is behind the letter and what it all means. And just when they have started to break through some of the encrypted messages of the letter, an unknown gas fills the Senate chambers as the Congress people await a speech by the British PM, killing all but a small handful. The President calls to invoke the 51st Directive believing that there is a terror threat. The question is... is the threat foreign or domestic?? And can this really come to pass despite all the checks and balances in this country? The story is an interesting one as everything we as Americans believe about the sanctity of our democracy is challenged. But, I struggled with the writing, the characters and actions of the characters. The author writes a female character but did a terrible job thinking like a woman. I was disgusted by the constant referral to the "5 second body check" that Erica has to endure whenever a man meets her. The way he writes Erica and her bestie's banter was more like to guys than two women. The predictability of Erica and Sam's getting together was obvious. Erica's colleague Tony who can detect her coming down the hall was ridiculous... just to name some. The idea behind the 51st Directive was a good one but this author is no Balducci when it comes to building suspense.
What do you do when the enemy of the country is the President? But more so, what can you do when the President of the United States orchestrates the mass murder of the whole of the government? There is no stopping him, or is there?
Follow Erica and Sam, along with their crew, as they try to solve this puzzle. They have been warned not to trust anyone, and this advice couldn’t be more exact. I won’t spoil it for you, but you will be surprised!!
The action-packed suspense that Michael Agliolo brings to this novel is outstanding. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole book. I couldn’t get enough, and to be honest, I am a little sad that I can’t follow Erica and Sam through more adventures. Book hangovers are real friends.
I am thrilled to award 51st Directive a full 5 out of 5 stars. I found this to be the perfect Remembrance Day read, and I recommend this novel to anyone who loves political thrillers. Your senses will be tingling after you read this fabulous book!
Thank you to the author and his PR firm for providing me with a copy of 51st Directive in exchange for an honest review.
I received a copy from Voracious Readers Only in exchange for an honest review. I wanted to like this book, who doesn’t like a strong female lead? But it was somewhat lacking in that the main character was an attractive woman who tried her hardest to be “manly” if that even makes sense. The premise was very intriguing and with everything going on in the world , sort of plausible. But what really did it for me were all the typos, and not just spelling errors, but mixed up tenses, improper punctuation, just a lot of grammatical errors. I am no expert but if I noticed it, that says a lot ! Hopefully there will be some major editing done . All in all , good pacing and action.
The author has woven an incredible story. The twists and turns kept me eagerly reading until I finished th e book. The plot and the characters and is very thorough and well developed. The knowledge of our constitution and the interplay of President, congress and the Supreme Court is nicely woven into the story. I love how the military, police, FBI and the secret service is well represented.
Divorce, family life, love, death and fear are many of the emotions and phases of life expressed in this book. Many people working together courageously bring about an awesome finish to this book.
I absolutely loved this book. The story line kept me hanging on and turning pages until the end. It’s thought provoking realizing that this is a terrifying situation that is actually completely possible.
Two reasons I’m leaving a 4 star review instead of 5:
First: the ending was good, but it felt rushed and kind of left me wanting more
Second: (and this is a personal thing, I know it doesn’t bother some) there were many grammatical errors and every time I notice one it pulls me out of the story for a minute.
Brutally honest, mind blowing and infuses the reader with the strongest love for America!!
This book needs to be read from the first word to the last word!! It gets the reader keep going thoroughly engrossed and deeply absorbed by the fascinating story!!! It makes one feel totally grateful to the founding fathers for thinking of a foolproof and magnificent way of administering the country! It also points to ways by which the 51st Directive can be misused by an unscrupulous person!
I am still reeling under the impact of this powerful book! My everlasting gratitude to the author!
Plot = superb. Characters = even better. Writing = best of all, with comfortable “kitchen table” style of writing that’s easy and enjoyable. Blends elements of a thriller with substance and interpretation of the 51st directive … plus just the right amount of humor. Comes at you from first chapter. Powerful fiction with plenty of non-fiction food for thought: what if this really happened???
I loved this book. I’m glad that in this divisive world that someone is pointing out that we’ve developed a political system that needs more thought out checks and balances. Hooray for this writer giving us the details of how bad we can go astray. I hope more people read it and take part in good government and take a greater part in local government, to prevent something like this.
This book shows that complete power corrupts completely. I hope I got that right. The characters are written using a very heavy hand. There is no nuance. Good is all good, and bad is all bad. I would like to have seen more layers for each.
Though greed and power are universal reasons for people to act in such a manner, they are never enough. Something has to have happened in their lives to make this option viable. This book needs that motivation.
This story provides a terrifying glimpse into the lengths some will go to achieve unchecked power. The conspiracy involved the highest levels in government, aided by those who were either blackmailed into cooperating or following illegal orders. All were considered expendable as collateral damage, as were others who were unwittingly placed in harm's way. This thriller hooked the reader from the beginning and never let go.
I enjoyed reading this book. Full of conspiracy theories and one of the things that I loved about it is that the right wing and the left wing of the government both had crazy ideas and were equally off base. Lots of action. I felt like it bogged down in the middle. Good choice for a summer read. Full disclosure: I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
If you enjoy spy-type thrillers then this is definitely for you. I enjoy a good thriller, however this kind of read is out of my norm. I am glad I took the time to read it. It does put into question....what if? Considering the power the government has over everything, it is a valid concern and this book will take you on a thrilling and scary journey of What If??
Thrilling Conjecture with Frightening Consequences
Here's a frightening thought carried to its conclusion. What if? is a question that's really scary. Our country is free to condemn itself. Whew! Am I ever glad this is fiction. There are enough twists and turns here for ten books. If you like thrilling stories, read this one. It's consequences will keep you awake at night.
The plot in this book was a bit frightening and you’ll see what I mean if you read it. But the proofreading was so bad, it was hard to keep reading. And for that reason alone I’m only giving it four stars. The premise was worth stumbling through typos, missing words, etc.
This story grabs you from the first page and hold tight until the last! Great character development and details. Presented a " what if" situation into a very plausible story that will keep you turning pages long after you say, " just one more chapter." Totally recommend reading this.
1960s Seven Days in May meet 51st Directive! A compelling novel of two mono maniacal leaders conspiring to circumvent the Constitution and remain in power. Does this ring a bell? The heroics of a small cadre of law.enforcement and military people find themselves thrown together to stop the heinous plot. It is a wonderful read.
I was hooked from the first chapter. I simply could not put it down! The characters were spot on and I thoroughly enjoyed the sense of humor breaking through the stress situations. Made the main characters more real. This scenario hits a little close for comfort
Will definitely do some going down a rabbit hole to see how much of this story could actually happen. If you believe in predictive programming, "art imitates life" and the fact that your enemy always, always has a tell, this book gives lots of shower-thought prompts. Recommend.
Excellent Story!!! This Is One Of Those Books Where You’ll Kick Yourself for Not Having Read It Long Ago!!!
Congrats and “Thank You!” to The Author for an excellent, captivating, exciting novel!!! Some parts of this book are hard-to-believe, but some other parts of it strike a painful nerve with how some US Presidents act in today’s world.
I like this book because it made me laugh, cry and get upset. Any book that can do that for me is a truly good read. I get involved with the characters of any book that I read and this one gave me some good characters. Yes I think I would recommend it for someone to read.
