Beautiful, compelling, and enchanting. This short volume has both a pull and a fascination. Delightful to read, and intriguing. Impressive writing.

Wong's pair of lovingly researched stories surfaces the vanishing world of amas, those Japanese matrilineal divers who swim to the depths in search of seafood or pearls without aid of oxygen tanks. "Sumiko's Daughters" dips into the centuries old culture's generational discontinuity while "Ayuka Breathes" concentrates on the contemporary male/female divide. Special mention should be made of Cynthia Alvarez's compact book design which is truly lovely. ...more
