GET THE SMILE YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED Often people hear myths about orthodontics from their friends or family and accept them as facts. Maybe they’ve heard that adults can’t get braces, or that they’ll have to wear the same bulky, metal braces that were popular decades ago. Maybe they’re afraid that braces will cause them pain during treatment. However, like all medicine, orthodontics have come a long way.
Dr. Thais Booms and Dr. Kelly Giannetti wrote Beyond A Consumer’s Guide to Orthodontics to dispel the myths and rumors about orthodontics. In this book, you’ll learn how everything about how orthodontics work in today’s world,
• how your bite was formed and why it matters, • what preventative treatment is available for children, • how orthodontics help snoring and sleep apnea, and • the different type of treatments available for adults.
If you’ve ever been on the fence about orthodontic treatment for you or your child, don’t hesitate to learn how your life can be changed—pain free!
Drs. Giannetti and Booms have provided an eye-opening book on all aspects of their profession as Orthodontists. They are both well trained and highly respected and practice together in California. They bring to this excellent book a warmth and understanding of the ‘fears’ of wearing braces to correct bite (and correct other aspects of irregular bite!), not only for children who comprise the bulk of orthodontic patients, but also for the parents of those children both as support systems and as patients themselves! They even include examples of elderly patients who they have successfully treated with braces.
And that is what makes this book so valuable. The anatomy of dentition is well discussed in terms everyone can understand with many photographs of both dental xrays and patients’ teeth before and after braces, and the history of Orthodontia is enlightening and reassuring. All of the latest information as to types of braces (steel vs porcelain vs plastic – read visible or invisible!), the reasons for seeking dental correction, the steps to expect from the first visit to the removal of the braces, the importance of oral hygiene while wearing braces, and the new era of Orthodontics that treats all age groups with many variations of correction.
Written by two very qualified experts, the book dispels myths and fears and replaces those myths with reassuring realistic facts that make the realm of bite correction and dental appearance something everyone can now approach without trepidation. This is an excellent resource and is highly recommended for all who are considering (or should consider!) correction of dentition.
This is written by a professional in the orthodontics field. It is very informative for both adults needing braces or children needing corrective treatment. It brought to like some things I’ve been noticing about my daughter and how she eats and sleeps and even about my own dental situation. While it still seems like I’ll never be able to get all of the corrective work I need done due to the cost, at least I can get it covered for my daughter so she doesn’t have to deal with the things I have to as an adult! This book gives information on preventative treatment and even how untreated dental misalignment can cause sleep apnea later in life. It was really an eye opening read for me. I will definitely be staying on top of my child’s dental needs because of it.
Having just gone through my oldest child getting braces, this is 120 pages I wish I had access to beforehand. Now that I have, however, that fourteen year old boy will be reading Beyond Braces: A Consumer's Guide to Orthodontics every time I catch him trying to go to bed without properly caring for his braces!
Dr. Kelly Giannetti and Dr. Thais Booms have written a helpful and positive book on the subject for parents and children alike. Everything from prevention to treatment options and aftercare is covered rather thoroughly. Both authors are obviously well respected in their field and care about patients. Horrors and myths are dispelled while cautionary tales are used in a constructive manner. I would recommend this to all of my parent friends if only to simply arm them with useful information.
Beyond Braces: A Consumer's Guide to Orthodontics by Dr. Kelly Giannetti, and Dr. Thais Booms is a great guide that goes into detail about what happens when you go to an orthodontist office. From when you first arrive until your final appointment and everything in between, this book shows exactly what to expect and how to proceed. Everything is covered here from prevention to after care, financing and treatment options; the information being presented in such a way that both parents and kids can benefit from reading this book. The authors write clearly without too much in the way of medical terminology, making it easy for anyone to understand. A wonderful consumer guide that helps to dispel many of the myths and fears that might be associated with getting braces, this book is highly recommended, whether you need braces as an adult or a young child.
